I am a first time grower. I keep these two seedlings in the greenhouse at night to maintain humidity and the temperature ranges in the low 90’s during the day. I keep them in direct sunlight. The angle of my house provides me with a 12-12 schedule. They have been undergoing transpiration every night like clock work. Stoma’s look like they are functioning at full capacity. These are auto flowers so the light cycle isn’t a big concern of mine.
They get feed 2-3 tablespoons of 6.0 pH water every day at 1 PM. The water is slightly cooler than room temperature to help cool them.
A few days ago they looked overwatered so I cut down the frequency of waterings and they started to look good again. Today I checked on them and one seems like it might be undergoing heat stress so I added some fans to each plant. Will this help with the high heat and humidity issues? Is there anything I should change?
A fan doesn’t regulate temps, it simply moves air around, unless the air source is coming from a different environment, which doesn’t look like it in your greenhouse…
Yeah during the day the greenhouse gets warm if its closed so I keep it open but the ocean breeze isnt consistent enough to move around the stagnant hot air. I figured it would help circulate it better. I have them on a timer so they only turn on during the day and shut off at night so the plants can sweat without getting too dry from the fans
@Cannabian, you grow in a greenhouse right? Any tips or tricks?
I think your girls look fine, at that age they just need a stable environment. However further along the growth, could see issues, but I haven’t grown outdoors.
Yup she looks fine. No heat stress. Raised arms means she is just enjoying the light a tad too much. I like praying hands tho (n just burnd tips). Means ur pushing her hard.
All over this site, ull see me preaching dont overwater seedlings. Feast famine… but thats soil. Coco is a soilless medium. Requires more frequent feedings then i use.
At this age u maybe able to get away with a couple teaspoons and a dome, but dont let her go too dry.
All that said. Thats one happy little plant. Just dont overcompensate
The greenhouse is plastic, 6x3x3. Its a good setup. I close the zippers about 80% at night and that keeps RH around 70-80. During the day I open them all the way because if the doors remain closed then it gets to about 100 degrees in there. They face east so the roof creates a shade around 4:30 PM, but they still get sunlight through the plastic. I saw yesterday that they were leaning towards the sun when they were in the shade of the house so I am not sure if the greenhouse is allowing enough through its material to get to them. Today I placed them outside the greenhouse at 4PM and they have continued to grow upright. I will see if this method will help with the shade issue in the greenhouse.
So far the biggest thing is temperature. I’m about as south of the US as you can get so I get great sunlight exposure but high temperatures along with the humidity so that is a concern.
Becuase it’s so hot, I water them at the hottest part of the day with water, rather than at morning and night. I sit the water in the fridge for 10 minutes to cool it a little below 70 degrees. I’m hoping this method cools the roots down when the sun is blazing.
What kinds of issues do you see down the road? Perhaps something I can prepare for?
Heat is just tough man. Im in Mississippi… know the feeling of cutting thru hot humid air to get around. Maybe a light watering early, n a cool drink after lunch?
Sounds good to me, you think like 3 tsp in the morning and 3 in the afternoon? The soil is still slightly moist from the watering this afternoon. I was also told that I need to feed 1/8 of the reccomended nutes every other feed or so because coco doesnt have any. I mixed 1/4 teaspoon of Fox Farms Tiger bloom in 2 liters of water, fixed the pH, and every two feedings they get about 2 tablespoons of that.
Yup. Start low and controlled. I wouldnt even feed at this age, but people in coco preach by it. They also start supplementing calmag alot sooner then soil people. Coco is a calcium HOG
2-3 spoons around her expected ROOT base is where u wanna shoot. Avoid her stem like the plague
One last question, would you recommend mixing the Calmag and feed in the same water or alternate the calcium and feedings. So calmag with regular water and then the next day the feed?
yeah lots of tips and tricks, what do need? Greenhouses are not what people think, they are like fish tanks. The biggest issue most people have in them is excessive heat build up. The second issue is massive humidity and that can be an issue for weed. In my opinion the common poly tunnel is pretty good if used at the end of the growing season. The typical backyard greenhouse is almost never ideal for growing weed, to low, crappy ventilation especially without a massive fan on an inkbird controller. Its why I designed my greenhouse the way I did. In addition its strong! Will take a storm head on. Will take heavy snow load too!
I’ve got two fans working in mine. The humidity sits at 60 percent and get a little higher at night when I close it. So far I haven’t had many issues but Florida is a mean and sweltering bitch this time of year. You think this will suffice to put up with the rainfall?
No not the kind of fan Im talking about. A greenhouse like mine would typically have a 24" industrial fan om the top of one end, typically the cool end or the East end, and a louvered flap vent on the other end. When the heat or humidity rises too high the fan comes on and sucks air into the greenhouse and the louvers open on the other to remove the issue. The problem with zip up tents is, they work if the temperature is between 70 and 80 American provided there is still some air flow, but if the humidity or temp rises and you close that tent OMG its like locking a dog in a hot car! Your plants will just lay down and die!
Mine is built quite differently it works off the chimney principle. Open at the bottom and large openings at the other side on the top. As the heat builds, it draws cold air in from the bottom. Its passive ventilation.
I’ve noticed that, one morning I woke up a bit late a realized I left it closed and it was 100 degrees in the thing! Your design is smart. This is my first time growing outdoor so I’m still trying to figure out what works best for the environment down here.
I’ve been interested in getting a greenhouse for the new house. I’ll look for passive venting design. Thought about installing heat in there so I could grow a little later into the season.
Cannabian I can’t read your metric tape measure. lol.
I think we were measuring the male? It was like 7’6" ? I chopped it down to less that 3 feet after it hit 9 feet! It was taking up way too much room. Its a good thing because the female behind it is now over 9 feet and Im going to need that space for bending.
