Boveda packs with terp bags

Can I get by without Boveda packs if I have terp bags with hygrometers? I’m on a really tight budget and don’t want to buy the Boveda packs unless I need them.

@dimple As long as the bags hold the desired humidity levels then I can’t see them needing the boveda packs.
It would depend on how long you plan to store your stash to determine a need for the packs or not.
Just my .02.

I have done it in the past. But if the humidity outside is not high enough it seems the bags will not get it up to where it needs to be. So I sit open bag by a humidifier for a few seconds to get the humidity up then close the bags. Repeat if necessary. Don’t know if it is the right thing to do or not but it works for me.

Your grove bags or variants will equalize with the environments rH. So if your bud is at 60% and you place the bag in a room that is say 40% rH it will dry out to that percent. The only way long term is to use humidity packs. Boveda has a good article on these types of bags. Basically they are just bags regardless of claims.

I use bodeva packs in my jars but not the cure bags. I have 3-4 lbs in cure bags for almost a year and it was fresh as the day I put it in the bag. When I bought cure bags the company stated the bodeva packs were not supposed to be used. I guess it depends on the bag

In regards to bags
"The Claim: “They Create a Perfect Micro-Environment for Cannabis” and “They Self-Regulate Humidity”

They do not. Any interior environment of any bag is susceptible to the ambient environment in which it’s placed. If a room is humid, the inside of the bag—however durable and tightly sealed—will eventually reach equilibrium with the room’s RH, and the same will happen for dry environments."

" Without a Boveda Pack, a Bag Is Just a Bag

As the research linked above plainly demonstrates, the contents of a bag will eventually reach equilibrium with the relative humidity of its surrounding environment. That is, without something inside the bag working to counteract those humidity extremes."

My legit grove bags drop humidity like a rock regardless of the moisture of the bud in them. That is as small as 1/2oz bags to my 1/2lb bags.
Maybe they work better if in a 55+% environment but in winter with 30-40% indoors they stand no chance for me at least without packs. Jars don’t/won’t do this.
I also use Govee humidity sensors. Way more accurate then the digital readout ones and can chart your VDP/Dew RH etc. You could see the drop trend without packs in my bags so they all have packs now.

I store my weed in Grove bags. Ive had it dry out even with boveda packs inside. It just took longer. I ended up tossing about 3lbs of 2-3yr old weed this yaer right before harvest, to make room. This year Im storing my Grove bags in my lung room. I have some bags with last years weed in totes under my bed. Its all dried out. I also have some 1/2lb bags in my extra refrigerator that the weed is dried out. However, if I want to smoke it Ill take a few buds and put them on a shelf in my tent for a few hours and its ready to go.

Were the packs dried out as well? I think they say to change them out every 2-3 months. I also sometimes recharge mine inside a container with RO water. I wouldn’t use recharged ones for important buds though.

Yeah the bovida packs were dried out too. Ill still use Grove bags over jars. Just need to store the bags in an environmentally controlled space.

I don’t have experience with buds getting too dry. With tobacco, however, I do. It was possible to reconstitute the moisture by putting a damp paper towel in the container overnight. However, it seemed to affect the flavor and potency, which I would guess would be the case with bud that becomes dry and is then reconstituted.

I had good luck curing with Grove bags. They stayed pretty stable but I was storing in a 50+ rH environment. I read much below this and they may not work properly. This time doing the grove bags and then a single large boveda pack in the storage bin with the bags. That way surrounding environment is stable. I’ve read boveda packs can impact taste if implemented at the wrong time in the bags. So hoping using a larger one outside the bags will preserve flavor and keep the bag cure stable.

Ive rehydrated 2yr old weed that got me stoned as F&ck but it tasted like shit. Wet paper towels always makes it taste worse to me than using some freshly harvested leaves. Using the humidity in my tent works the best imo.
