I have heard people say to start seedlings use paper towel methods, then some say to put in water cup until they sprout, then some say just put into soil, what are some opinions , im just learning and all help is appreciated
I have a few methods but the most successful method for me is put the seed in a damp paper towel in a zip lock bag in a warm dark spot and typically by day 2ish you’ll have sprouts ![]()
All 3 methods work great, personally I use a small cup of water with just a splash of peroxide and 90% of the time tail shows within 2 maybe 3 days. I think it comes down to what works for you
I soak in a shot glass (sometimes 3% h2o2, sometimes not) for 24 hrs., then if sprouted - into soil, if not - transfer to damp paper towel in a covered tupperware container placed on a temp controlled heat mat until sprout.
I’ve done it directly in the soil but I have better success rate sprouting first.
Note: I’ve read if using a paper towel, to use a single ply. Apparently the root can get between plies and can get damaged when removed. I haven’t had that happen yet.

I have had great success with the cup method with a drop or two of h2o2.
100% germination but I did have issues with damping off after a week on a couple of seedlings.
Try a few different ways and see what works for you is always the best for learning.
Here is an older topic that you may find informative.
if you soak’ em overnight do make sure that the water is room temp before dropping in your seeds…they may float but will sink in time.
Seeds sprout best at about 80 degrees. I use water and peroxide for 24 hours, then in paper towel with all water wrung out that you can by hand, just moist. Fold towel twice and put seeds in middle layer. Put towel in ziploc bag and lay on top of freezer or cable box, something warm to the touch. I almost always have tails ready to plant after a day in each, then plant them in media and water in, then they don’t get anything but light and high humidity for a week, I usually have roots at bottom of solos in a week after planting.![]()

I usually do it like @Growdoc and @d-Jawz do. I use water and peroxcide in a glass in a warm dark place for 24hrs if no tail at that point, it goes into a wet paper towel, in a baggie on top of my DVR cable box, with a towel over it. However recently I only been soaking them for just a few hours then putting them into damp, “not wet” soil in a clear solo cup with tuns of holes in its sides and bottom. The clear cups goes into red solo cups.
This is how I do it too. I think it also depends on the seed as to how long it take to germinate.
I have done water/peroxide solution on heated mat or top of light 2 days cracked and into dirt ![]()
I have done directly in soil took about 5 days til you see action on my end ![]()
I have tried paper towel method, just can’t get that down yet ![]()
Ive had the most success using the paper towel method.
18-24 hrs in distilled water/hydrogen peroxide then to a moist paper towel in a ziplock sat on top of a heating mat.
Typically ill get a tail within 12-24 hrs.
I agree here. I used to use the paper towel method. now I let the float till I see a tail then plant them. Here is what @d-Jawz is referring
too. I forgot about these and they grew crazy.
