Anytime OQ! Glad it helped out. That’s awesome you been making hash. Looks like some pretty killer chunks you made. You seem pretty versed in concentrates.
I’d never done more than press keif between two quarters. I showed up at hangout night to see the tail end of trimming up some 4 months cured top notch bud and my contribution to the project was the 1st 2nd and 3rd run keif sifted from two trim bins and the 19” trim bowl with all the waste from the trimming. Everything that didn’t sift through was collected and bagged then straight to the freezer while I worked on forming the first one. Frozen stuff shaken and tossed around in the trim bin for the second and repeated the process for the third attempt which just lacked enough stickiness to make a tight ball so he had me throw it in the bag from the frz after 3 runs and sent me home with it. He considered it trash because it was leaf trim and a shload of little popcorn buds that were small enough to fit through the grill in the trim bowl. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Triple keifed or not, it’s still dank af then add the additional bonus of the hash and me be like pig in
I have a bit of work to do to separate the buds and any chunks of hash I missed and what is left will be oil infusion plus 8 zip of lightly run, gently squeezed oil infusion leavings made from the very buds we were trimming. I had already planned on meeting up with you sometime later this week when I have time off to put a little Christmas buds and hash in your hand. I’ll text you @Shadegrown
Oh almost forgot, since it looks like we’re going to have a fair bit of bud already heavily saturated with coconut oil we’re going to be able to make a decent amount of coconut oil infusion and I think that I will save the separated leaves from the bag I have now to make a separate mct oil infusion for experienced people only. My wife won’t touch it after her od the first time we tried it instead of the cold pressed organic coconut oil. I will be bringing some amount of that your way sometime in the future too. Merry Christmas, see you soon.
Sounds interesting…I need to read up.
I like infusions. They are very easy to make and coconut oil is versatile for making a variety of edibles. I usually make the oil and hand it over to my wife for gummy making. The 1/2 lb was leftovers from my friend making his own infused coconut oil and he said he didn’t really squeeze too hard collecting so all I will need to do is add them to more fresh oil for about an hour in the crockpot and wring out some oily goodness. Gonna save a few steps and come out with plenty of oil on hand.
I’m not considering myself expert but if you have any questions about making simple coconut oil infusion I’ll be happy to answer them.
Thanks for the generous offer. Where to start? I know absolutely nothing about it.
Decent amount of trimmings or coarsely broken up bud on hand to start with. I like to have about an ounce/ one to two cups of final yield in oil when I make mine, mainly depending on how much trimmings etc I have to use. The material needs not be cured (that’s optional) but should be dry to start off. Spread it out in a thin layer on a baking sheet and place in oven preheated to 250F for 25-35 minutes. Looking for a SLIGHT tanning/browning but not always seen a change in shade. 35 minutes is plenty for proper decarboxilation at 250F. This converts the thc-a into thc proper so your body can digest it. I use pint mason jars for small batches usually. They have a 2 cup capacity and usually yields about a cup per run. I initially used coffee filters tied off but I saw another person here using a cold brew coffee filter for jars that is perfect for filling with decarbed herb and making the squeezing of the saturated herb easier and efficient. Implied above, I start with about double the amount of oil I expect to get out of the process since you’re never going to get all that oil back out of the bud. Excessive squeezing will cause excess chlorophyll flavor in uncured medium. Best to leave the angels their cut. Make sure the coconut oil is warm enough to liquefy at least then blend in a tablespoon of liquid Lethecin (critical to aid liver absorption and any recipe where water will need to be combined with the oil, like gummy candy) before adding any herb to infuse. This should be done either in a pot of water kept below boiling or my preferred method, the crockpot. I use a digital probe thermometer to try to maintain around 150-170F oil temperature for 2-3 hours. Gentle shake at least once per hour and then remove the herb from the oil and semi firmly squeeze the oil out of it over top of the jar. I will proofread in the morning before I smoke and if I left anything important out or something incorrect I’ll adjust.
These are excellent directions you’ve given. Thank you again for taking the time to put this down.
So when you say “an ounce / one to two cups” … that’s the material going into the filter bags that are then soaked in the crock pot? What is the ratio of decarb’d material to coconut oil? How much oil do you put into your crock pot to begin with? I see you say that you start with double the amount…
As you could tell from yesterday… I’ve been running on a delay.
Thanks for hitting me up. Whenever you get free bro. No worries here.
Oz/2 cups of oil. Yields about a cup, cup and 1/4. You can vary the amount of herb more or less. My amounts reflect the fact that I use pint widemouth mason jars. This is something else that I want to clarify. I infuse in the same container I will store it in. It’s just easier for me, especially with the ultra fine stainless steel screen coffee filter and gasket made to fit my jars. These are available on Amazon in every size basically from multiple manufacturers. The oil is NEVER in contact with water but the infusion is done in a hot water bath and the crockpot is an easy way to get it done. Pot of water on the stove is also fine. I keep a lid on the jar but not quite tight yet not loose enough to drop when picking up. Terps are pretty much irrelevant in this scenario. I think most of that is lost in the decarb but the goal is often to conceal the weed flavor somewhat while producing a potent result. Another thing to keep an eye on is the weed itself around the halfway mark in the infusion time. It will literally cook/slow fry and you won’t like burnt bitter flavor oil so that is another reason to go low and slow.
Mad preesh for the hook up bro! That has a delicious taste, smooth smoke and a clean heady high. I like it.
I think I’ll check out the hash tomorrow.
I hope you and the family have a Merry Christmas
Thanks for the Christmas wishes and same for you and your family as well. I’m glad you enjoyed the bud. I’m sure you will like the hash. It’s compressed tight so small pieces topping a bowl is a good way to use it. Enjoy
Merry Christmas everyone
Thanks @spankyjr1 , merry Christmas sir.
I’m inadvertently leaving people out. Merry Christmas @kaptain3d @Twelve1
Merry Christmas @Everybodyelsethatstopsbyhereoccasionally
Thanks! And a very Merry Christmas/Holidays to you and yours!
Happy New Year everyone!
Hope everybody’s celebrations were great!!
Back at ya, Quill. I have been traveling out of town for a while, no computer access. Thanks for the details on the recipe, I appreciate that so much. I need to try to do this. I roll up a jay, and I can only take like 1 or 2 hits, and I’m blitzed. It’s been so many years since I smoked any weed - and what I am finding is that the strains now much be like 5x or more potent than what I had back in the 80’s. …
I have to point out a little mistake in my instructions. I said 1-2 cups but the jar I use only holds two cups. The flower, although it absorbs the oil, also displaces so if you were to put two cups of oil in and then add the flower it would overflow. My actual starting amount of oil is about one and a half cups to account for displacement and it ends up being about a cup depending on how much you squeeze the flower out at the end of the process. If I want strong oil I repeat the process with more flower in the same oil. I have done this as many as 3x per batch but some oil is lost every time because it is soaked in the flower so the total volume is sacrificed for the extra strength. I usually save the oil soaked herb and pour hot coffee through it on days when I don’t have anything important going on.
