Autos switching from 20/4 to 18/6 in final weeks of flower?

My autos seem to be taking forever. A knowledge friend suggested I shorten the duration of light from 20/4 to 18/6 in the final weeks of flower.

He says it been his experience that on stubborn strains, cutting the duration of light jump starts the trichome ripening process. This will force the trichomes to get cloudy sooner.

Anyone?

Auto’s are very strange. They do what they want when they want. In this grow alone, I had a plant start to flower in 2 weeks from popping the dirt. In 80 Days I’ve already harvested her. Planted on that same day I have a plant that didn’t even show a single pistol for 11 weeks. Yes that’s correct 11 weeks of veg.

I’ve never found personally that changing the light from 18/6 to 20/4 or vice versa did anything to ignite growth or speed up anything.

My last grow of autos I had one flower for 17 weeks before she was ready.

I personally feel as long as you have good light, your environment dialed in, your microbial life healthy in your soil, and your nutrients correct is all you can and need to do.

Genetics of an auto flower it’s going to do what it wants. Avoiding stress and practicing patience is all we can do

That’s just my two cents

Lostgirl,

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply.

I was getting nervous/impatient. Plants are fading, but the buds keep getting bigger and denser. Trichomes are there, but not clouding up.

I think the light situation is covered. 1000w HPS. Feeding GH Maxibloom, with Bestie Bloomz first part of flower, and now using Cha Ching. Adding molasses every other watering.

I’m just getting nervous these will suddenly skip through my fingers lol.

Autos sure are finicky. I leave my lights on 18/6 for the entire grow. Some leave them on 24 hrs a day. I’ve grown 2 strains of autos and mine were both ready to chop at 10-14 weeks from 4” seedlings. I guess I’ve been lucky. But I have had some strange growing autos. I had 1 that is in the picture was no bigger than the sprite 20oz bottle. That was the whole plant. They sure are a trip to grow😁 it was Grand Daddy Purple and had 20% thc.

Just out of curiosity, what week of flower is the plant in? Do you have a picture?

Well my last grow I had a similar situation with trichomes not turning when I thought they should. I had a GSCE auto go 17 weeks in flower before I finally saw a single Amber tricom. It took 15 weeks in flower before my tri comes started turning cloudy.

This goes back to what I originally said. They’re going to do what they want when they want.

By the way, I was very patient through the entire process. When the girl finally finished in week 17 and I harvest her and dried her she produced 11 oz of premium bud

This was 1/2 of her main cola

Lostgirl,

Day 78 from seed, day 44 from initial flower. I’ll take a photo of the whole plant tomorrow, but here are some trichomes I took today.
Three of flower, one of sugar leaf.

That’s basically only 6 weeks in flower. I would definitely like to see the whole plants. Honestly myself , only 6 weeks into flower I wouldn’t even be looking at tritons right now.

You’re 2 days ahead of me with my auto grow. Trichomes look the same as mine. Give it at least 2 more weeks. The white pistols will slow way down and there will be way more dark retracted pistols… that’s when she will start getting ready.

My last run of autos got flipped from 18/6 to 12/12 for the last two weeks of flower. I didn’t notice any change in their ripening speed.

A good “problem” to have IMHO.
