These two seedlings are in their second week of life, they have continued to slowly grow up but I haven’t noticed a ton of leaf development. Currently I have a 150w led light sitting about 26-28” up and I’m getting reading of about 280umols for its ppfd. Im new to this so I think I might just need a sanity check here, what’s your take on this? Side note: I just removed the domes from the two seedlings, the third pot was planted a week behind and has yet to break surface.
Keep the domes on and only spray the inside of dome. If they get too leggy, lower light. You can fill in with soil to keep from tipping. They need to be kept warm.
They’re building roots right now keep it up
Temp has remained steady at around 75F, humidity fluctuates a bit, it stays around 70-75% during the day sometimes dropping into the 60s. At night when the humidifier runs out it’ll drop as low as 45% but I don’t imagine it sits in that zone for more than a few hours since I always refill in the morning. I give them a mist about every other day when I see the soil under the dome about dried out. The ph was around 6.5 last time I checked. I’ll keep using the domes in the mean time!
That’s what I figured, especially since they were immediately planted in 5g pots I assumed I’d see a slow start while the roots were spreading out, just didn’t want them to get to lanky while that root growth played out. Thanks!
Is this soil or coco?
Soil, the bottom 2/3 is fox farm ocean forest and the top 1/3 is fox farm happy frog. I mixed in extra perlite to both layers!
The soil is a hot mixture, only need to keep dome moist.once that tap root hits bottom look out. I use solo cups to start then transplant i can bury them deeper in the home pot. Patience is everything
Yeah I was aware of the soil being hot, this is why I went with two layers placing the happy frog on top. I figured since it’s less loaded than ocean forest it should be a bit easier on the seedling roots as they are just starting to branch out. With the ocean forest being more beneficial to a further matured plant when the roots grow large enough to hit that layer. I’ve been lightly misting the area around the seeding, staying about 2” away from the actual plant, but will switch to just spraying the dome as you all have mentioned. I wouldn’t think that would be enough moisture to keep them going but will give it a shot! May have to spray more often it it dries up too quick, I guess…
You can also put about a shot glass of water around the outer edge of the dome. Make her find that ring with her toes.
I will try this, I’ve been trying to get them to spread their roots by spraying a couple inches out but still within the confines of the dome. I’m gonna try to get them to stretch a bit harder
The spray bottle is no good for anything but misting the inside of the cup. Pour your little bit of water around the outside of the cup. It will get deeper than the spray. I use a shot glass and pour halfway around the cup. Next time I pour on the other half of the cup.
Appreciate the advice! Currently I use this deck sprayer so it’s actually a bit hardier than a your typical spray bottle. I do have a small spray bottle as well which is probably better for spraying the dome. I’ve adjusted the large sprayer so that it’s really just misting at this point but I can bump it up bit so that I get more soil penetration. It’s just been easier to use the deck sprayer as I can ph balance a large batch of water and go of of that for awhile. Although I guess it would be easy enough to just fill a shot glass with the sprayer…
