Once I put the babies in soil, general question do I need to have light on them or can they do they own things until sprout and do I automatically put them on 12/12 or do I run feminized seeds different?
Run them 18/6 if a photo and you don’t want it to flower after just a few weeks. Switch to 12/12 when you are ready for the plants to flower.
I run a heat mat and set my HLG 150 to a 24/0 day just to maintain constant gentle warmth. I run 24/0 until transplanted.
What if not going to transplant starting in their permanent home?
A lot of auto growers will do just that but you will have to have good watering practices to avoid drowning. I have been starting my (photoperiod) plants in water/peroxide then into rock wool. Once I see a tap root they go into a Solo cup of coco/perlite. It makes proper watering easier. Then when plant’s leaves are past the rim of the cup they go into their final home.
Done right and it won’t affect autos.
Okay. Yeah I’ve seen the watering around the edges or just dampen the top of the soil with spray bottle.
Hi @Lightbrightt2010 dont worry about spraying the top to make the soil damp. Spraying is good for 3 things I know of, spraying a dome for humidity, spraying topsoil of organic grow to be gentle, and foliar spraying which I view as emergency feeding. Just my 2c so water a very small amount like you said away from the stem and not to keep it wet but remember wet to dry cycles.
For example I spray the dome, no water on the soil. 5 - 7 days. Take domes off in about a week, 2oz water then nothing 4 days. Then play it by eye. That’s just what my cups and soil seem to like. Depending on container size and how fast it dries and soil type etc
Hey glad you told me. I appreciate it. Is a dome a promising ideal first step in seedling, I’ve seen it a lot on here
Its to keep high humidity, seedlings like that.
If youre RH is high it isnt needed. Somewhere in the 60’s is good. 50’s so-so but mine is 30s and 40s
So its absorbing moisture from the air and the root growing out looking for water. Hence the dryback for the soil
Understood
I guess I need to ask how often do I spray the done with the week just the once when I plant them?.
I never used a dome but from what i gathered looking at them you just take it off and mist the walls. Respray if it doesnt have much condensation left on it. Some will keep their seedlings under a dome for a few weeks.
I popped mine sticking it in a root riot plug in a small dish with a heat pad under it. Once sprouted/broke soil I kept a light on it at around 10 - 20% intensity and 20in away (i had a 150w led panel) To keep the stretch down then once she started her first set of true leaves off she went into the dwc bucket with the plug burried in hydroton. Ii kept the rH% in the tent around 70ish with a humidifier though.
Yup thanks @Serf it was too late for this farmer.
Maybe it was once or twice a day. When soil was moist sometimes it fogged-up on it’s own, see how yours goes. Near 80F
Thank you
I would spray mine as needed to make sure the dome was visibly moist. Worked well. My mistake was pulling the dome too soon and the seedling dropped. But putting the dome back on and she stood right back up.
How soon did you pull dome off before the week or before she was strong enough
I was guided by some people here, but the consensus was once she touched the edges. So I did that and it worked well. When I pulled early she was just a tiny sprout. I used a big Starbucks clear cup that I had laying around for the dome with a hole drilled in the bottom for air flow.
Gotcha. Glad to have a mental note of your experience so I don’t pull to soon.
