I see a lot of references about mixing soil’s like ffhf and ffof why is this done?
Blending soil ingredients allows the grower to recognize and proactively prepare a bedding that will provide an environment consistant with the growers style. I overwater, so i add peat moss. I paid college tuition to learn and read about about mychoriza in 1974 (USU,1976). PNW resident, BIGFOOT Mychos seemed right for me. I even buy cheaper mychos and mix them. Kelp/Silica (Who doesn’t love the beach?). Seattle Slew didn’t get a diet of cheap straw. Plants at different stages of life have specific needs and specific soils address those issues. Still like to blend my own. My seedlings and clones need more porus soil. Veg & flower can handle heavier soil and nutrients.
Many do what works for them and what’s readily available. FF makes cannabis friendly soils that many of us use.
FFOF can tend to be a bit “hot” for seedlings where as FFHF tends to be a little kinder to seedlings
Above is spot on, but always add some perlite to your ff soil. Not the best of drainage
My FFOF is hot. My additives included. Run-off never gets below 7.0 Plants loving it.
I think top dressing (done twice) and additives are the reason 6.0/1000 going in comes out 7.5/XXXX.
FFOF used soil will be re-mix blended with new FFOF, Mychos, peat moss, pumice, and kitchen sink.
I like a mix of Strawberry Fields (bottom 1/3) and Ocean Forest (top 2/3) I’ve not had any problems with OF being to hot for my seedling, I did have an issue from using ph unstable water, but that wasnt the soils fault and the seedling was fine in the end.
As said above, add perlite to your FF soil. I go 3 scoops soil one scoop perlite. If you can find it, get larger sized perlite, the MG/scotts brand is so tiny.
Happy frog is amended with “ soil microbes”, ocean forest isn’t.
@mangold0318 this is a fantastic question that I e pondered as well. Can’t wait for some more of the responses.
Many of us have layered soils so the plant grows into stronger soils.
This pic has circulated for a few years now.
Seedling mix first. Very friendly to sprouts.
Happy Frog next, is good for young plants.
Ocean Forest for the deep far reaching roots once the plant matures.
I have done this and it works gloriously.
Love the illustration for us visual learners! Thank you @Spiney_norman
