Very counter productive, like I said not trying to sound rude or anything just trying to help.
@DanB I’d never think you were being rude buddy it’s all good
Yep, unless you’re in the mosquito breeding business. ![]()
THATS WHY MY HOUSE IS FULL OF MOSQUITOES!!!
Scrolled long enough that I believe everyone posted the feedback I have. But just in case
- Don’t let water be exposed to light
- Do your best to maintain water temp
- Beneficial bacteria or sterile res will help. Not both obviously.
- If you’re filling buckets of standby water they need to be aerated or circulated and not exposed to light.

Dang tell me about it
So whenever using a tote I’m wondering what would be the best placement if I’m going to have three airlines in it? I’m about to get it set up I’m wondering what would be best for me to drill my holes. I’m also wondering how many gallons this tote is and how many gallons of water goes in it. I was thinking put the two best air stones on each side of my net pot and maybe one in between them or one on the side to keep the water going? Thank you for the help and how many gallons would you say this tote is?
@Myfriendis410 @dbrn32 y’all are the only two I can remember telling me about the totes lol
Not sure of the reference but i believe the really large ones are 27 gallon. I’m sure at operating level its a decent amount less volume though.
And I would say to drill as few holes as possible.
At a glance I would guess that to be maybe a 16 gallon tote at best, which I would consider the minimum size to use.
Also of consideration is the net pot size, going for a smaller 3 or 4 inch pot is large enough whilst taking up less depth which allows you to have a higher nutrient levels and greater volume per tote.
When i used them totes with the yellow lids i had 4 and ran 15 or 20 gallons i can’t remember i think 15. I use 18 gallon totes now and run 15 for 2 buckets to 25 for 4 and yeah less holes is best cause leaks are a real headache and also idk what nozzels you’re gonna use the 1/2 inch bulkheads they sell for hydro check behind the rubber for a lip where it was made cause in my experience that was the main cause of leaks
I am just going to be using an air pump in an air stone
I actually have some net pots that are like two or a half inches but I already have the plant going in a 5 gallon bucket with the bucket lid and I already made my whole in the tote, the circle is not perfect but the net pot lid top does cover it up I hope it is efficient but where would you say I should drill the holes at? Oh wait as I said that I just seen there is a lip over it with a whole and I can drill from the inside out and I might be perfect with that
To give you a reference, here is my setup with 16 gallon totes and 4 inch net cups with 4 inch one-sided air stones.
Also, you might want to invest in some hole saws.
Okay I see what you’re saying in order for me to get more room but like I said I drilled the hole already and already have a plant growing in that kind of lid. Maybe there’s some kind of way I could lift the pot up onto something so it’s it’s up a little higher if I need to
So I have the tub soaking in my bathtub and some Dawn soap and peroxide then I was going to scrub it down rinse it out fill it up with water and let it start bubbling, this sound okay or am I doing anything wrong
Be careful of light leaks to the Rez ![]()

Light goes straight through those lids so you have to cover with foil or something
Well I finally got it cleaned out and went to put some tap water in it and let it bubble overnight but was only able to get about 13 gallons and I put the lid on and drop the net pot in there in the bottom of the pot was swimming in the water so I scooped out about 2 gallons or so. I have a bigger tote but I have this one already set up so I guess I’m just going to go with this and see how it works out
I got some reflective film but it’s real thin like if you hold it up to the light you can see through it, I have some black spray paint. What else can I put on top to cover it up? Cardboard?
