Why did my dwc water turn mildewy overnight?

The correction to the problem is simple:

  1. Flush your system with dilute peroxide.
  2. Wipe mineral buildups with vinegar when making reservoir changes.
  3. Rinse well.
  4. Get your water temps down.
  5. Replace your air stone when mineral buildup is seen.
  6. Stop storing stagnant water for more than a few days.
  7. Happy growing

@MidwestGuy okay cool glad you say the fix is simple because in my head this is not seem so simple LOL I’m going through it right now

@MidwestGuy and @Jayjay504 the air stone and tube you are using is it not a used tube and stone? Sometimes no matter how “good” of a clean we do the reused stuff gets this problem no matter what we do just from the different growth and other contaminants from previous grows.

@DanB well it is old tubing but new stones but I did try to clean the tubing but I guess I have to just go get some new tubing and new Stones today but what I’m wondering is how do I clean what is in the net lid? Like if I change the water in my bucket and put new stones what do I do to stop whatever is in the net lid from infecting my new stuff?

Make sure than you are using black tubing. Clear tubing lets in light and light provides the energy for things like algae to grow.

Clean it with peroxide.

Are you adding Hydroguard or Southern Ag. I prefer the Southern Ag, same main ingredient at a fraction of the cost. It really helps when your res temps start spiking :love_you_gesture:

Here is a lot about DWC. If I remember correctly the nutrients you are using is same this person used and had tons of problems.

@OGIncognito no I don’t have nothing like that

This right here is your problem, each bucket of water you have sitting needs air pumped into it to bubble off the gasses and keep it from developing bacteria.

This is your fix.
correction to the problem is simple:

Flush your system with dilute peroxide.
Wipe mineral buildups with vinegar when making reservoir changes.
Rinse well.
Get your water temps down.
Replace your air stone when mineral buildup is seen.
Stop storing stagnant water for more than a few days.
Instead add an air stone and get air to them to keep them bubbling. This should help nullify the ability for bacteria to build up
Happy growing

Running a chiller in conjunction with adding a reservoir (RDWC) will eliminate most issues with hydro. I have told everyone wanting to try DWC that it can be very problematic.

Peroxide is the single best disinfectant and should be your go to for all components.

Depending on how high the solids are in your tap water may require using R/O as well.

I just filled these yesterday with tap water and it always gets cloudy for a week or so until that stuff settles and i don’t mind it cause with using tap i don’t need calmag

i also used to bubble it for a day before adding but that got old fast

All right so pretty much it doesn’t make sense to have 25 gallons of tap water sitting correct? What if I put caps on the jugs?

Yeah you don’t want it to just sit

Putting caps on is just as good as letting them sit… If you have an extra air stone hook up a pump and run air in it. Will help more then just letting it sit bro.. just trying to help.

You can use

Aqua One Ammonia & Chlorine Neutraliser improves aquarium water by removing harmful toxins such as chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals found in tap water as well as reducing levels of toxic ammonia and nitrate produced from fish waste.

I have at the beginning of my current grow without any problems.

So I have a stupid question probably, how come when you buy water jugs from the store they don’t go bad? I was to go to an RO machine and fill up a bunch of jugs could I then put caps on them and they will remain good or is it the same thing? I definitely appreciate your help too man believe that

Well I did a bucket change yesterday and put peroxide in and on everything LOL but anyway when I woke up this morning I was expecting to go smell stinky water but it’s not stinky yet LOL my pH didn’t go back up to 7.8 neither, it was only around 6.1 so I have a feeling my problem was from my old tap water

The environment and conditioning or the facility bottling the water vs tap water set in a grown room. The tap water and grow room have more contaminants in the air then the process facilities. That would be my guess. Not poking just answering the best way I can.

That old tap water came from a bucket stored in your grow room? Maybe 24 hours before you are ready to change rez or feed plants fill the buckets and let them sit 24 hours but not more the 48 hours without oxygen being pumped in them.. stagnant water is a breading ground for all kinds of stuff.

@DanB yeah so it’s pretty much pissing in the wind to fill up 25 buckets and let them sit in my cabinet for when I need them
