Hey guys so thinking od doing dwc for my next run nor 100% on it yet so just trying to get some info on it first… so if i do this id use a 5 gal bucket i can buy from home depot. From videos ive watched is it really just cutting a hole in the lid to put the basket in and then a line for an airstone? And then i fill up with water and nutes till the water touches the bottom of the basket?
@MidwestGuy @DanB @dbrn32 @DRsDank @OGIncognito @Storm @StonedCold13 @Hugh85
Idk if it makes a difference but my grow room is 4.5x 6.5 and i have 2 500w schlux led lights. I can grow a max of 5 plants at a time
Idk enough about hydroponics to try to advise you. What I have read up on an don’t understand is how the water in the res doesn’t get problems with pH and nutrient buildup.
Forget the 5 gallon bucket, get a bigger tote.
@OGIncognito not sure of whom to tag so I thought I remembered seeing something you did using hydro system I think clones
So when you fill the totes how high do you put the water?? Also can you fir 3 plants in one tote? Like i said i can do 5 plants
Thanks for the tag buddy but I’m not your bucket guy, i run flood tables and top feed systems.
@OGIncognito has been tagged, also @Retiredoldguy does the style your looking for
Thank you
morning @Mmanson1981 … with buckets you will have some challenges with changing nutrients when your girl gets bigger and also with so little room for nutrients you will be adding each day… a tote would allow for more room for nutrients …
Ok so can i put 3 plants in 1 tote? And the i just fill tote to the bottom of the screen basket?? And the water i fill with is mixed with the nute and have an air stone in it correct?
Agree with @Retiredoldguy on the totes Grow Bro, I run a DIY aeroponic set up in Totes to prevent the roots from over taking a bucket and causing issues. Res temps will be your biggest challenge
I am a firm believer in not crowding my girls… I grow 1 in a 12 gallon tote with 4 2x2 air stones…keep water level about 2-3 inches below your basket at first but then you can go lower because she has roots in the water…
Ok might be a dumb question but never done this before. If i keep the water 3 in below the basket how do the seedling get water until their roots are long enough to reach the water
Right!
The more nutrient solution you have the more stable your solution will be. You have to remember that a mature healthy plant plant root mass will consume probably 1/2 of your bucket and only leave you with room for 2 gallons or so of solution. As the plant draws water and nutrients you will have to top off often and be susceptible to large ph and ppm swings. For this reason a much larger res is usually desired.
Small buckets are much more practical for a recirculating system that has an additional res and plumbing to keep more nutrient solution in the system.
One of most important things to consider for a hydroponic system is being able to maintain healthy solution temps. The universal target for this is 68⁰F. This is about the best point for dissolved oxygen and keeping bacteria at bay. You can opt to run a sterile res or beneficial bacteria to help with temp but these only help so much. If your typical grow room temps are 80f your solution will creep towards and eventually stabilize with your environment. This will cause most to need some sort of cooling method for at least a portion of the year or struggle with res temp issues. Which will take you back to issues with 5 gallon buckets and amount of solution available in system.
We have some very good hydroponic growers here that would probably ve willing to help you if you decide to go dowm this road. Just beware it will probably be more complicated than putting holes in the top of 5 gallon buckets.
The bubbles exploding on the surface from the air stones should cause enough splashing to be wetting the bottom of your net cups and thus providing your seedlings with what they need to grow.
What @StevOz said is what happens…
This is one plant’s roots in a 17 gallon tote, 2 plant’s roots and the plant itself would make plant maintenance and growth very difficult.
Ahhhhh
The spaghetti maker
Oh wow… yeah idk if i can fit 5 totes in the room
I think you should get off that #5
You could hit it out the park with 2 like the above
Remember more plants doesn’t mean more product if they don’t have room to grow
Maybe 3 in your room
