I soak them in water for two days then move them to the paper towel method where I put them in a bag however the tails are only starting to just come out a little bit and they’ve been in the paper towel for two days.why is it taking so long. I also have some older seeds I want to try to grow, what are some tips and tricks to germinating old seeds
I soak 18 to 24 hours. I transfer to damp toilet paper for 48 hours and finally into their forever home. ![]()
No heat mat…no dome…just splash a little water each day or two. That is all.
They’ll probably have full tails in the next 6-12 hrs
I’ve had good luck germinating in jiffy pellets, last one sprouted in 2 days, had roots coming out the side and bottom the next day. Just need to cut the “netting” off the pellet when transplanting into solo cup.
Ok thanks a bunch, can you give me some advice on what my PH levels should be ? I am hearing alot of different answers, also when people test PH do they test it in the soil or do they test the water before they put it in the soil? Thanks sorry just trying to soak up as much information as possible from knowledgeable people. Thanks.
PH dpends on what you’re using for medium. Soil, coco, soiless, hydroponic. For soil, 6.3-6.8. Coco 5.5-6.3 which is also the case for hydroponic. Mixtures like promix have a sweet spot around 6.0.
Ph’ing will always be the last thing you do before pouring the water/nutrient mix into your medium. Most will water until there is some runoff and test that. That will give you an indication of what your soils ph and ppm is.
do you have to take it out of the jiffy pot or do you just transplant it in the jiffy pot ??
I use jiffy pellets not the pots, just need to take the netting off the outside. The pellet will stay together.
Kelp is a great seed soak if your seeds are on the older side.
I just popped mine into a cup of plain old tap water. No peroxide, no paper towels.....nothing. All but 1 of the 10 seeds I threw in the cup germinated, and if I’m being honest, the one that didn’t pop was kinda dicked up and didn’t look viable to begin with. They grew a tail after a *few* days. I then filled a party cup with moistened happy frog, poked a whole in the dirt with my finger and dropped a sprout in. It has been twelve days since I dropped them in the dirt and they are a foot wide already!
