What fertilizers to use?

A question from a fellow grower:

What do you think about adding composted horse manure with
Fox Farm soil. What’s another good source for other nutrients like Calcium and magnesium ?
Thanks for help. Also putting sand and bone meal. Any suggestions ?
Thanks again.

I’m not sure if it applies to the lighter mixtures but Ocean Forest blend has enough bat guano in it. I’ve had batches of it that were a little hot and caused nutrient burn on fan leaves.

What about mixing Happy Frog with it?

Happy Frog also seems complete in itself. Are you having a nutrient or ph problem?

I AM having a pH problem, but I’m taking the blame for that. Just added some granulated lime to the soil, hoping it will get me back to where I need to be.

The reason I asked is because I’m trying to get away from the soil with time release fertilizers. I’ve always used Miracle Grow before, but I’m learning (thanks to ILGM and the helpful people here) that I need better control of the nutrients.

I was at the feed store and saw FFoF and Happy Frog sitting there, so I compared them side by side. The Happy Frog listed all those beneficial microbes that I keep hearing about while I didn’t see much with the FFoF, yet the rest of it looked really good.

I know companies hype their products for the sales, so I was thinking "what if I mix them both with perlite? " wouldn’t that make for a truly complete soil? I don’t know, so I asked.

I know (now) that most of my problems in the past have been due to pH problems locking out nutrients. That information itself has made finding this community worth my time. The rest of the great information here has just been a pleasant bonus!

Thank you Dennis.

Fox Farm mixes are ph balanced, usually 6.4 to 6.8 and will require no lime addition. For microbes and beneficial bacteria try Bio Bizz or Rainbow mix (both grow and flower) .

The Fox Farm is going to be my next soil. The lime was added to the Miracle Grow. It’s all I have at the moment. I plan on getting the new soil this weekend for when I repot my seedlings. I had to start some late after realizing what I had planted were autos.
