I recently was gifted some items to grow. I have done some solid research but as a first time grower, I am feeling very overwhelmed with info but want to make sure I am fully prepared for a successful grow.
Items I obtained:
Grow Tent: 4Dx8Wx7H
2- Xtrasun Air Cooled Reflector Hoods
1- Xtrasun 1000W dimmable digital ballast
1- Lumatek 1000W dimmable electronic ballast
1- Diablo 1000W dimmable electronic ballast
4- Ultrasun 1000w HPS bulbs
1 - iPower 4” in-line fan
1- Phresh 6” x 24” carbon filter
2- Inkbird plug and play thermostat
3- clip fans
3- timers
Additionally purchased:
Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil
Fox Farm Big Bloom Liquid Plant Food
Planter Pots
1- Grow Bright 1000W MH bulb
ILGM Seed Kit POP Culture ( Skywalker OG, Bruce Banner and Black Widow)
What else should I need to have a successful green thumb?
I would recommend a ppm meter and a ph meter. As the added nutrients in the soil are consumed they will have to be replenished. It’s a delicate balance and a true measurement is need to balance them.
You’re going to need better/stronger exhaust fans to keep the tent cool, 1000 watt HPS/MH is going to crank out the heat, get exhaust fans and ducting that match the vent size (either 6" or 8") of the air cooled hoods.
Yeah WRXJenn has some serious lights to play with. If it was me, I’d run 2 of the lights at 600 watts. 2 600 watt HPS is perfect for a 4x8 and easier to keep temps down over running 2 1000 watters.
I agree it’s a lot of power! Since I was gifted these items I couldn’t be picky lol. I plan on keeping the ballasts at 60% (600w) as I was reading that is pretty ideal. I don’t plan on pumping out huge quantities by any means. Just a couple plants.
I was also given a roll of Mylar so I was also debating dividing the tent in half using the Mylar since I only plan on growing a couple units. Not sure if that’s a good idea or not though?
For a couple/few plants, you would only need to use 1 light at 600 watts, maybe use the mylar as a curtain to make the area smaller and better light reflection.
The one thing I would wanna mention using Mylar, the plastic will act as a moisture catch. If there’s enough moisture in the air it will latch on to the plastic like a magnet increasing the chance of mold. Just FYI I have have worked in insulation and moisture barriers for years
