So currently I have 2 2x4x5 tents and I am flowering in both. I plan on switching one to just veg and the other to just flower and set up a perpetual system. To do this, I purchased a HLG 260w 4000k for the veg, and have a HLG 260w Rspec for flower. I think that will be the correct setup once I start the perpetual system.
For now, I have my HLG 260w XL Rspec flowering in one, and a 60w and 150w blurple in the other. Would it be better for me to flower with the 4000k HLG light. I know 4000k is more of a veg spectrum, but wanted to see if I should bring it in the tent. Let me know what you think.
Also, I noticed that my HLG 260w XL Rspec is at 3500k. I didn’t have a choice when purchasing, but wasn’t sure if they offer 3000k versions?
From my very limited experience 3500k is good for all stages of growth. I’m currently running two 288 r-spec 3500k lights in a 4x4. BTW plants look good and healthy.
I do it all under 2 HLG 260xl rspec kits in my 4x4. If you seen my grows, you will also know I grow only on a 12/12 cycle…Autos and Photos. And these are the 4k and I have no problems growing monsters.
@JonnyUtah there are some growers who swear by 4K through the entire grow, claiming the spectrum brings out unique terpenes and flavonoids. And regardless, the spectrum of the B-spec HLG white light has light in all the same wavelengths as the R-spec.
I think part of our aversion to blue spectrums is that MH, the classic veg light, is really inefficient. You wouldn’t really want to flower under one because they simply don’t yield as well, watt per watt. I’m not sure there’s a difference in efficiency between R and B spec.
Thanks! Germinated the seeds at the end of Feb. Started with just the 60w blurple and added the COBB, then split the 6 plants into the two tents once I got the HLG. I faced some high temps and miracle grow soil issues which I think stunted the growth.
The 4000k light doesn’t actually signify R/B spec, and it only has white lights on it. I’ll probably add the 4000k with the COBB setup to maximize the power in the tent.
Just need to figure out what to do with the small black blurple light. I was thinking about hanging it under the HLG XL in the space with no QB. Or is that over kill at this point?
I tired to use one of those light meter apps, but didn’t seem to get consistent info at all.
Switching to lights off during hot hours has been working very well to keep them in check. Over the past month, my temps have been a high of 86 and a low of 68. So much better than the 96 to 64 I was getting before.
I do have an a/c unit for my garage for the summer, but my breaker has been flipping so I need to get creative with my setup.
86 is not so bad if you can keep your humidity over 40, but not too high in 2nd half of flowering, lower RH is better to avoid the dreaded bud rot.
The 260 4000k should provide interesting results in flowering, as when I used to use 600 watt metal halides to fill in some areas of a large grow space, the buds under the MH always to seem to have more terpenes and was very frosty, not as much weight as the ones under 600 watt HPS, but was very nice.
Nice setup you got there and good choice of new lights. Good growing.
Humidity has been the biggest pain of all! Started with a small dehumidifier in each, and then had to put a 70pint one in the garage. Now I’ve got it under control and can keep it within 10% even if the lights are on/off or if I watered recently. It was a big win because I had RH up to 83% in veg.
I have spoken with Steve at HLG about different spectrums. The B spec boards can help you have a little tighter internodal spacing. That’s about the only difference. The far red in the R spec helps the flowers a bit.
