I can’t believe you guys had similar issues. When my two Grand Daddy Purple girls both died, as a new grower of only a year under my belt, I couldn’t figure it out…and when I thought it was the soil, I still wasn’t 100% sure that was it. I had performed a slurry test on the prior bag and it was fine, but I never tested the new bag assuming there was consistency there. I’ve since used it all up and I’m on to a new bag……and I’ll definitely test that one now….and all of them moving forward prior to planting.
My grow buddy said he read and saw videos of growers ‘airing out’ their soil for a few days prior to filling their pots. Anyone else hear about that technique in calming down hot soil??
I’ve never heard of airing out soil, I’ve heard of aerating it and I know a couple of people that spread out their soil on a tarp and cover it with a black plastic to literally cook out bugs n kill any seeds that might be there. I even know one that puts their soil in their oven to do it (that must make the house smell good lol) I pot up my soil water it and allow it to (cook) start living and building up the bacteria n fungi… I don’t know if you were to leave the soil cooking like this for a longer period of time would make your soil less “hot” I looked for that answer but didn’t find it
Sure have problems took over a month to correct. @MadamCalamity also had the same problems. Which is why I’m transitioning to another medium, and nutrient line. Not worth the frustration, don’t like chasing problems.
Yep, nothing but problems from this bag! Same as yourself, my last 4 Skittlez run in Happy Frog went well, the ones growing in coco loco next to the Happy frog are having no issues. Big exception here is I think the Happy frog contained thrip larvae??? Don’t know if that’s possible with them being leaf eaters, but something brought them to my grow and never had them before.
Yeah, I may not have explained it correctly, same as you it sounds. Laying out the soil on a screen or in a plastic tub with the top off, tossing it around daily, to dry it out a bit. Looks like I may be making a soil change as well.
I’ve kind of unintentionally done this for the coming grow I guess? As you know I’ve been having gnat issues so I finally ordered some beneficial mites that eat them and they arrived super quick in the mail, so I had to kick into gear on the weekend just gone and get the potting mix mixed with perlite and into their pots quick smart as apparently the bugs don’t like being kept waiting lol. I always sprinkle/mix in some Great White (mykos) when I pot up new pots too so I’m praying that this round of seedlings goes off without a hitch! Beans are due to get dropped mid next week so that’ll be 20 or so days “cooking”
Thanks mate. Using BITS, and have done a H2O2 watering, and have sticky yellow traps, and have now also bought mites that eat gnat eggs and lavae. This has been ongoing for months now. Hoping the mites are the final defence needed
@yoshi uses 1/4 cup of milk in a gallon of water to get rid of gnats, @Calizona told me it worked for him so I tried it and it did get rid of almost all of them, used skitter bits a few days after & never saw them again.
Are you guys stating the Ole fella was right finally ? I just be learning myself that’s all . Hope it saves a lot of growers a few dollars and chemicals that’s plant safe .
Just make sure due to my own experiences is to not over do it , as to nutrients because of the potassium percentages and vitamins that’s in milk is also beneficial to the plants as like it would do for your immune system . So basically plants and humans have almost similarities in beneficial bacteria that allows us to live on how life and it’s design to living .
Feed day last Wednesday. I’m thinking I have a little too much nitrogen in the Banana Kush girls due to the dark leaves and minor clawing. This bag of Happy Frog soil is kicking my ass again. Gave them 2 liters of water with 5ml of Fish!t, followed by 2 liters of just Jacks part A. So far they look like they are reacting well to the treatment. Tucked a few leaves and cut four off…trying not to stress them out during veg. I have the 260xl at about 110 watts and that producing some stretch.
The Blue Dream (middle) received her LST and looks like she hasn’t stalled at all. The two Sour Diesel girls on either side will get their LST this weekend. They all received 2 liters of water with 2 1/2 ml of Fish!t. I have the 260xl at 118 watts hoping to get some stretch out of their squatty look. The Blue Dream in the Solo cup is taking her time since she was dropped late…she’ll get transplanted in about a week.
The other Solo cup is an ‘alleged’ G-13 auto from ILGM. I bought 20 seeds and couldn’t resist starting one. She poked her head out yesterday. I’m thinking once I chop and dry the Purple Hulk in the small tent on Saturday, I’ll grow her in there under the HLG 135.
Looking good in there Bro! Likewise with Happy Frog issues. I ended up tossing the the rest of the bag. I’m also trashing a complete 4 plant auto run due to thrips, my suspicion is the Happy Frog! I’ve never had insect issues other than some fungus gnats. Going back to strictly coco and build 5 gallons yesterday and soaking in nutes for a few days. Continued success IP54
Thanks man! If I knew then….that it was the soil…I would have done the same thing and chucked it. When these issues cropped up, I immediately thought it was something I did….nutes, lights, etc. It wasn’t until the process of elimination that it came down to the soil, and quite frankly, I never thought that could be the case. I’m in too far with these Banana Kush girls to turn back now, I try to gut it out. You’re a braver man than I to cull an entire grow!
Me too on the soil but figured it couldn’t be the soil. Thought it was PH fluctuations in my reservoirs and by the time I realized it was thrips and soil, like yourself was too far in and coming up on flowering. I’m still seeing traces of thrips and have defoliate these down to where the crop won’t equal the struggles.
