Trimming sugar leaves

@bob31 @ Countryboyjvd1971 @BIGE @ktreez420 How close do you trim sugar leaves? Are they just one leaf sticking out, can tiny palm leaves sticking out of bud be harvested?

The sugar leaves are the leaves that are coming out of the bud @Bobbi the big leaves are the fan leaves
When you trim the buds I like to remove as much of the leave material as possible it can be daunting if you have a lot of bud to trim lol
Keep the averts clean as you go this will help get nice close cuts
I’ll try to post a picture of my buds after I trim them later
And yes save all the trimmings you can make butter ,oils ,& hash from it waste not what not lol

@Countryboyjvd1971 I watched some video’s on trimming, some just clip off the ones sticking out, some take sugar leaves out completely. I wasn’t sure about how many tricombes were on the leaves. ( I had planned on making some butter)

@Bobbi, you definitely want to save them. They are loaded with trichomes. I save mine for barter.

use them for other things cooking, anything that calls for trim. The big fan leaves probably not good for much. I don’t cut off all of the sugar leaves only the ones sticking straight out or that are easy enough to trim. @Bobbi

I’m 59 years old and I grew up on smoking much different stuff than the buds we have today. That cured sugar leaf with the tiny popcorn buds tossed in makes great rolling material. I can smoke a whole one, enjoy it, and not be trashed for 12 hours lol.

@bob31 @Countryboyjvd1971 I’m drying one of my plants, what’s the perfect humidity suppose to be for drying? I also spent a couple hours reading your Morning in the Garden this morning, been scanning that off and on for a month now. I noticed you (bob) referring to ABV and wondered how you incorporated it into creams or lotions?

I try to maintain around 55-60% humidity while drying
This way when I put it in jars it’s already at the right moisture level I will only need to burp for 20 min once a day for a week or so
I also use a vacuum sealer to pull air out of my jars as well @Bobbi
You might want to look at the thread
" Has anyone used a food saver for curing "
If you have one available that is they aren’t necessary
Also don’t rush to get it in jars it ready to be jarred when stems snap not bend

I agree with @Countryboyjvd1971. +/- 60% humidity is about where you want to dry. Much less humidity and they’ll dry to fast, more and you’ll risk mold. Close is usually good though.

@Bobbi

That’s a lot of reading lol

I copied this off another site. I couldn’t remember where it was on ILGM

If Your Humidity Is…

Dry (Under 30% RH) - You might consider leaving more leaves on your plant while trimming to help slow down the drying process. The more plant matter left behind, the lower the buds dry. For example you could trim your buds but leave extra fan leaves, or possibly even not trim at all until after drying.

Average Humidity - If you never really notice the humidity where you live chances are it’s perfect for hanging your cannabis upside down to dry

Humid (Over 60% Humidity) - If it’s very humid where you live, you might consider actually separating buds from branches after trimming and put them on a drying rack or mesh to help them dry in the high humidity without running into problems with mold (here’s how one grower dried in high humidity)

I am collecting all of the ABV. My wife decided she liked the liquid vape better so we switched over to that. I still use the bud vape, but not as much as I did initially. So I haven’t actually made it, but I’m going to make some cream soon. Just need a few more grams of ABV, When I do it I will post it over on this thread

I do have a vacuum sealer I can use but I didn’t think we were suppose to keep MJ in plastic? Thought I read toxic in the plastic?
We have a dehumidifier in the basement and it’s set for 51%, so that’s what the atmosphere is around my drying MJ is.
Bob…yes, that was a lot of reading. I’ve spent many hours reading the morning in the garden series. Sometimes I feel like a lurker, sometimes I feel like a stalker reading it. LOL

@Bobbi they sell jar attachments for pint and quart size mason jars lids if I remember correctly I got mine for something like 23$ on Amazon got a set one pint size other quart size most of us use glass but I know of a few people that use plastic containers as well
If you can set the humidifier to 55-60% it would be better imo

you could always just post and say good morning! No need to lurk. We want you to feel at home @Bobbi

I can be a little anti-social at times, but saying good morning in the garden gets me off on the right foot in the morning!

@bob31 @Countryboyjvd1971 It has the feel of a guy’s thing even tho I see some females posting. My hubby is a big game hunter/guns, guns, did I say guns? and a Harley Davidson guy, more his type of thread then mine. Thanks, I might say hi. P.S. I’m going to buy the jar attachment for my sealer, good deal!

Well everyone is welcome to post. Even you know…girls. lol

Your hubby sounds like a gun and HD guy! hahaha I’ve got a few guns myself but I gave up the motorcycles a few years ago. I may go back to them again!

Hi and welcome! There’s a different vibe here in general so the sooner you feel comfortable the better. I’m a gun guy and a big game hunter and I manage to control myself here (mostly) lol.

@bob31 you might be pleased to know that I busted out a jar of sugar leaves, rolled a fat one and got through half of it. Nice afternoon buzz with a cup of coffee. I don’t normally indulge this early in the day but I got no place to be lol.

I’m sure that most of the weed I smoked in the 70’s was more leaf than anything else. Nothing wrong with having a nice buzz in the afternoon! Unless you’re operating heavy machinery.

The only thing I’m operating is my recliner, so I’ve been medicated early and often today!

@Myfriendis410

Ps. I always wanted to be a big game hunter. But I haven’t ever pulled the trigger during a hunt. Almost on a nice 8 point a few years ago but he beat me into some heavy cover and got away!
