Thoughts on what is wrong, Hydroponic Grow Help Needed

Hi All,
This is my third grow, the first two were in Coco and moved a Hydro system.
Everything‘s been going fine with getting through the stage with no issues and into the flowering stage - Week 3 and have I got issues.
I seem to have colas are wilting and look like they’re dying but it’s only on half the plant and on one side It’s just really weird.
The weather has not been great with high humidity, I’ve been running a dehumidifier with some success but the temperature takes a hit.
The plant has done really well in the veg state but then one day full branches on one side start to wilt, but the other side is fine.
It’s been taking nutrients fine and filling tank regularly.
Currently doing a root flush as in pretty sure it’s nutrient locked as the plant has not taken hardy any fluid out of the Reservoir.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey @mardy .
Welcome to the forum.
I am guessing you have a case of stem rot or possible root rot. Stem rot will affect a single area like that. Root rot usually will effect the entire plant.
Follow that stem down to the base and look for a brownish or gray area. If you find something like that remove the branch and as much of the molded area as you can.
May be something else, but this is the most common issue with what I see.
Could be an insect or worm in the branch too.

Changed tank to clean root ball using hydroshield (peroxide and silver nitrate)
Ph:6.3 and EC: 2.2 when changed in reservoir, but PH drops to 6.0 and EC is up 2.5.
Not sure if this is just the excess nutrients coming out of system.

This is not a pH or nutrient issue. This is what a branch looks like when its cut from the plant. It starts to wilt just like you see.
I think you have either something in the stem or a mold issue in the branch.

Look for something like this…

Some picks from today…

Can’t see any real marks or complete damaged areas to any of the stems…

I keep bug strips in the tent and have seen nothing on them.

It not taking anywhere near the amount of fluid it once was.

I’m doing a root flush at the moment and hopefully it recovers

Get a close up of this area
Are the roots nice and white?

That’s the stuff of nightmares. But luckily nothing like the picture or anything that’s close to it…

Yeah, I am not seeing any big problem.
I wonder what this is tho…

Lets see if I can tag in some more experienced hydro growers…
@dbrn32 , @Myfriendis410
I cant remember who grows hydroponic well.
Perhaps you guys can tag in some growers.

Looks like stem rot. @peachfuzz any thoughts?

Its a little hard to tell with those pics…
My ? Is…
How high is the water level from the bottom of your net baskets…?
Should be a space or air gap of around 4 inches for a plant that size…
Is your air stone cloged or line kinked…?
Those would be my first suspects…
It looks like damping off as stated by others…
:v: :sunglasses:

I would start by giving it a mild dose of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide daily to kill any pathogens that may not be visible and that should see them recover, grow new unaffected roots and prevent any further damage being done to the effected roots.

I have eleven hydroponic grows so far and lost two plants at the same stage yours are in. I see your top feeding and the top pellets look dry from the pictures. What I found is the root ball pluged all the drain holes in the net pot and water started to dam up in the pot. It took a week before the top clay pellets showed signs of water and then it was too late. I turn the top feed tubes off after veg and dump directly in the bucket. I also noticed I no longer have problems with fungus gnats when the top feed is turned off.
Just a thought.

@Harold you are 100% correct.
I’ve pulled the plant today and the root ball on the bottom just fell off as it was just been held on by 1 or 2 roots. The top drain holes of the system was completely blocked. I think it’s past the point continuing. Also that it started to produce the dreaded bananas. Plus the good side has started the same process of shutting down.
So close this time.

There’s was also an other 4cm of pebbles onto of the main root structure.
Harold (or anyone else can help)
How’d you get around the drain holes blocking up?
The system I used was nutsystems flo-gro 500.

I use 5.5" net pots and when I use top water feed tubes, I run them down to the bottom of the net pot. This way the water runs down the roots outside the net pot and no chance of water damming up in the net pot. The Purple Punch Had shorter roots than my Critical Mass and Power Plant, so I used the feed tube pushed all the way to the bottom. The blue sleeve covers the clear feed line. Once the roots reach the water reservoir, I really don’t see a need for top water feed tubes. Twenty-four hours before a Nute change I run H2O2 treated water through the clay to kill any fungus gnats “pesky little critters”.
I use a 20-gallon black craftsman tote for my seedling tank and the “Raft Method” with NO top water feed tubes. I grow in the basement and sometimes I get temperature large changes. I’ve lost too many plants to Damp off, so I just raft them. I use a pulley system to adjust the height for water fluctuations.

If you can insulate your tank and covers, it can really help keep the heat out. My tank covers have 1" of insulation glued to the bottoms and sealed them with Flex seal plus to keep the mold away. I also put 3" of insulating foam around the outside wall of my tank and left them exposed to the two outside basement walls and floor to help dissipate heat. By adding the insulated covers, I was able to reduce the water temperature by 2.5Deg C. My water temp. runs between 19 - 21 deg C all year round.

I hope this helps. Happy growing!

Glad it was figured out.

Thanks for the suggestion. Right down to the hardware shop today to grab a roll of reflective insulation…

Anyone used SilverWrap LD Reflective Wall Insulation, it seems the best bang for buck?

I “side feed” for ten minutes every hour in my diy rdwc with a small submersed aquarium pump and airstone constantly running. The rootball doesn’t mind if I fill it to full and it starts making noise if it gets too low.
