I have a couple of plants that for all intents and purposes seem to be doing pretty well. They both went into flower right around the first week of August. I’ve been noticing some yellowing of fan leaves recently. Both plants are showing the same amount of yellowing on some leaves. Strains are Double Dream and Pinnacle and both are outdoors in 7 gal bags. I used Fox Farms Ocean Forest with a bit of my own compost as well as some extra Perilite. Didn’t do too much in veg in regard to nutes, just Sea Kelp extract at each watering with hose water (our water isn’t too hard where I’m located).
I have an idea where I may have “gone wrong” though. Mid August I switched to Build-a-Bloom and stopped providing any Nitrogen. I’ve been feeding the recommended 1 Tsp/gal of water, and feeding as necessary. It’s pretty warm in Nor Cal and I typically water once the soil registers dry, or very close to dry. Maybe I should have weened them a bit, instead of just switching, but here we are. I’m not seeing any signs of burn on the leaves, and all of the yellowing is consistent among the leaves that are presenting such on both plants.
I know that this can be a normal phase, but would love to get the opinions of more seasoned growers. I’m curious if re-introducing a bit of nitrogen with feedings could help? Looking for some opinions and or possible solutions, thanks in advance!
I just snapped a few pics, and can provide better shots if necessary.
It is normal for a plant to start shedding the lower leaves as it ages. The rest of the plant looks pretty good
Nitrogen is extremely important during the first 5 weeks of flower. This period is called “the stretch” and it is the most rapid growth the plant will experience. A plant can double in size during these 5 weeks and it is nitrogen that powers that growth. Excessive yellowing is usually caused by inadequate nitrogen.
Yeah, in hindsight I should have kept feeding Nitrogen, so now I’ll know for next time. You mention excessive yellowing is usually caused by lack of nitrogen, but just to clarify the yellowing I’m seeing would probably not be considered excessive would it?
Based on the pics provided, does it seem reasonable to continue with what I’m doing?
If I recall correctly, i was adding 1 tablespoon Sea Kelp extract per gallon of water. Would I want to go back to that, or dial that back by say, half and do that for a few more weeks, maybe through the end of the month?
I’m tempted to stick with what I’ve got, as it’s worked for me through veg, and I’m already this far into flower. I’ll experiment and update this thread as I go. I’m thinking I’ll feed a dialed back amount Nitrogen for the next few weeks, monitor and update here.
Use this thread as a grow journal and we’ll all help you along the way. Post pics, updates, and questions. I can change the title of this thread to indicate that it is a journal if you like. For example, “Teemunee’s Grow Journal.”
I suggest using nutrients intended for cannabis. The build-a-bloom is not a complete product. Jacks 321 is a great product that a lot of experienced growers use.
I went back and forth in regard to creating a new thread, and obviously in the end decided to do so. I love the idea of a Journal and will provide periodic updates.
I have read and heard a good amount about Jacks 321, and I’ll dig a little deeper for next years outdoor grow.
Your plants are in early flower. Feed them well with a balanced cannabis product to get the most out of them. You probably have 8 weeks to go. Stick to the basics and treat them well and they will produce.
@teemunee WELCOME…Okay I have the same problem thats not really a problem as much as a symptom…Yes the first time I grew and the plants went into flower and started that stuff I was freaking out too until I found out that it was a normal occurrence as stated. Id be a lot more worried if it was in veg and doing that…With the said what MidwestGuy stated is what I would do too…
With Jacks do you think doubling the part A would be too much?
