Sunrise/Sunset Mode Inquiry

Hey Growmies,

This is my first grow with my new AC Infinity 1000W EVO10. I’ll be ready to flip in about a week.
I’d like to know how people are using the sunrise/sunset mode to achieve the best results.

Thanks

Nice light!

Limiting light by ramping up or down and reducing PPFD incrementally during the light period doesn’t make sense to me. Plants use light to produce the energy (sugars via photosynthesis) the plant needs to produce and maintain trichomes. AC Infinity is a great company, but it sounds like the feature is more marketing nonsense than anything else.

Thanks @MidwestGuy. That was initial my thought also but I can’t shake the feeling I might be missing out on something.

You are likely missing less potent weed if the plant is not given all the PPFD that you can give it.

Curious… what ppfd do you shoot for during veg and flower?
I target 600 during veg, 1000 for flower then turn back down to 700 the last two weeks of flower to prevent foxtailing

I run my plants at 1,100 PPFD.

I have a sort of grow log over at Back with a new grow room

I kick it up to 1,100 once that plant is mature enough to take it.

I don’t think you are. I was playing this out in my head. Naturally they begin taking light in when photons hit a certain point of intesity and stop inversely. The lighting we use, I dont believe, is as intense as sunlight. I think a lot of times marketers take advantage of our humanity based thinking? Like making dog food appear more appealing to our eyes than the dogs taste? With our chickens I can’t help but think they’re cold at 30F because I am. They’re not. They love it. I agree with @MidwestGuy. Although, I’m guessing one could do a study and we could put it with the ol UVA discussion.

Thanks for that thoughtful reply @SausageMahoney. I gotcha. Like fishing lures that are made to hook more fishermen than fish.

I’ve never used the sunrise/sunset feature. It just seems like an extra to me in an already great automation system.

Not going to criticize AC Infinity too much. A lot of light makers are incredible liars. Adding such a feature seems silly, but it doesn’t hurt anyone. These light manufacturers that claim their 120 watt lights are 600 watts are the real scammers. These lights absolutely pollute the Amazon listings.

Vivosun offers the same feature on their digital controller. It’s cute and easy for them to include but silly. I don’t use it.

They also offer a “varying breeze” feature for their circulation fans. It ramps the speed in steps from 0 to 10 then back down to 0, and repeats. Another silly feature I don’t use.

I don’t mind their inclusion, though, because I doubt they increase the price.

Wholesale rheostats only cost a dollar or 2 when you buy in quantity. Modifying tooling to accommodate them is probably only a few hours of engineering time and some paperwork for configuration managers and so on as a one-time cost.

It doesn’t cost even that. If the ACI and Vivosun digital controllers contain rheostats, it isn’t for the purpose of adding these features. The sunrise/set and varying-breeze features are implemented in software. It’s easy to write such code, so I doubt the extra cost amounts to much.

Attempting to copy nature is the nature of all lights right?? Maybe these features are unnecessary and contribute to the end cost being higher but I completely understand the thought process leading to this particular rabbit hole. Maybe the manufacturers or some influencers will do some side by side comparisons to quell the debate lol……

I need to build up some inventory and establish consistency then, maybe someday, I’ll do a grow with these optional settings. For now it’ll be all or nothing

Thanks to all that contributed.
