Solo cup or straight to to the 5 gal bucket?
Auto or Photo? If auto straight in the 5. Photo the cup first then 3 gallon then final home. Is how I do it.
Auto’s, my first grow, thanks
Many go straight to final pot.
I don’t think it matters if Photo or Auto
I do both depending on current circumstances ie other plants currently growing and available space as Peat pots or plastic cups are small footprint where the final is big.
I get the seedlings two or three inches high in the starter cups then straight to the 5 gallon fabric pots just be careful to not over water in seedling stage. Good luck
I have done both, solo cup and straight into ground with my WWA’s. 2/2 for straight planter, I like to handle seedlings as little as possible.
I like to start in a clear solo cup so I can monitor the root structure. Some seeds take their time building roots and some build them very quickly. If I see that the plant puts out roots slowly, I know once I go to the 5 gal the plant is probably not going to grow much right away as it’s taking time laying roots. Without that information I’m wondering if it’s putting down roots or if something else is wrong.
Aren’t you glad you got all the same answers to make your decision easier!
I like to go solo cup then to final pot with every grow.
For autos I have always gone jiffy puck for the first 7 days or so then into 5 gallon smart pots.
The issue with cups is if you wait to long you will stunt them, have to transplant them before they know their roots have touched the edge of the container. So as soon as you see their roots your really already to late and defeating the purpose.
I do autos first solo, than 2.5gal and then 5gal. Nothing is happen when your careful.
I do that because I need max plant in my space.
It is written everywhere to start autos in their final homes… buuuut. I think they root better, and grow faster in smaller homes at first. But you have to make sure u transplant before roots get bound
@Jbum I’m new to autos. I’ve got 3 Amnesia Haze autos and i put the 1st seed that was ready for soil in Burpee seed starter and a jiffy pot i plan on transplanting the whole pot into 5 gal fabric pots layered 1/2 Happy frog on top and ocean forest on the bottom I have 2 more seeds I’m waiting to sprout their root. What’s your opinion on what I’ve done so far. Btw 1st seed in 18-6 planned light schedule.
Please anyone chim in
Sounds ok I have no experience with the Jiffy pots though. I have heard they are hard to break down so I’ve just stayed away from them. When it looks to be time to transplant if it was mine I would carefully inspect the Jiffy looking for roots that may have broke thru and CAREFULLY see if I could A) remove the Jiffy all together or B) again CAREFULLY cut some slits and or pieces of the sides and bottoms to ensure the roots can expand easily.
That’s just my inexperienced opinion perhaps others will chime in maybe @Missiles May have an idea.
Hope that helps and keep us posted!
I have never used the jiffy pots before I use the rapid rooters but I think @blackthumbbetty has used them to start her autos
I wondered how long it took the Jiffy pots to break down. Guess we’ll find out. Screwing up has always left a lasting impression on me.
Thx for your input I appreciate it
I don’t think you screwed up. Again I have zero experience with them so. Should not be a huge issue by all means I was just giving the reason I don’t use them lol. Do you have a Journal going?
No you didn’t screw up lots of people do it that way and use those. Until they break down just make sure the water gets through the walls of the jiffy pot when you do water
@Missiles I read where Autos aren’t supposed to be transplanted. I have a hidden area to germinate that isn’t big enough for 5 gal pots so I figure hell use jiffy pots and just bury the pot and dont expose roots to light.
Yes you are correct Autos do not care to be transplanted although I do know some that do it with great success. I always start mine out in a 5 gallon. You will be fine with the jiffy pot. Do you have a journal started? I would be glad to follow along
