Quick Wash Ethanol Tincture

I just finished making this. Used 7 grams of buds and a bunch of calyxes I scraped off of dry branches. Got 3 grams of shatter.

Hi Betty, thank-you for your post! Could you clarify something please? As the alcohol evaporates, does the oil “precipitate out of solution”, is that why there are little clumps of oil? That suggests that the alcohol can only hold so much cannabinoid, so there’s a maximum potency the tincture can be? My goal is (was) to make a potent tincture where I only need 1-2 drops for a hefty dose, but maybe Chemistry says that’s not possible?

No, it’s not about the saturation point. It’s the cannabis oil falling out of suspension of whatever water is left behind from your solvent and starting material.

Alcohol is not a carrier fluid, but rather a solvent.

1 gram of well prepared, well filtered, and well purged concentrate can yield between 750-900mg of Cannabinoids.

If you took 12 grams of purged concentrate and mixed it with 40ml of a carrier fluid, you’d have about 52 ml of “tincture”, which could be dosed out at about 80mg per ½ ml. I don’t know if the cannabis concentratewill fall out of the carrier fluid here, but as long as you’re shaking the bottle before dosing, you’ll be fine.

@blackthumbbetty, Sorry if I missed something, but how finely do you grind the decarbed herb before adding the alcohol? Thanks.

It’s been at least a month since @blackthumbbetty has been around so I’ll take a shot at it.

I’ve never ground mine before an ethanol wash, but I do break the buds up by hand prior to soaking them. They will break up on their own after having been frozen and having a good shaking.

Thanks!

what happens if the feco doesn’t end with black tarry stuff? I just did an ounce of weed and followed the process. What is left is more golden looking rather than black/tarry. Any help? @blackthumbbetty @Caligirl24

A golden color is normal.

DO OT GRIND YOUR MATERIAL FOR QWET CONCENTRATES, EVER.

Yes, this is a complete freaking sentence. Ffs

It’s good. Black and tarry isn’t what you’re necessarily going for, but thanks to Rick Simpson oil, that’s what most people expect.

This may be a silly question, but if I wanted to do QWET with CBD bud, would it work the same way? Would the oil that resulted be 750mg/gm of CBD? I am thinking about growing CBD and thought I’d ask.

Not a silly question!

It will, absolutely. I extract more CBD oil via qwet than anything else.

@thedeernad here’s a thread about qwet. I have since learned quite a lot more, so if you have any questions about QWET, let me know.

So new to this Betty, I am just beginning with making my CBD tinctures. I have the MBM and high potency CBD flower (Suver Haze and Sour Space Candy) in laymen terms I need help understanding how to winterize my tincture and activated carbon filtration…Also, I found a base recipe that calls for 1 ml of pure evaporated extract to 30 ml of carrier oil. Does this sound right? Any direction is appreciated. @blackthumbbetty

I don’t recommend the MBM for tincture. Winterizing is specifically to ensure as little chlorophyll as possible gets into your wash. The MBM heats incredibly high and tears up the material, making winterization a moot point, unfortunately.

Activated carbon filtration is a great way to clean up oil, but you’ll lose about 15-25% of your end product.

1ml of concentrate into 30ml of oil makes each 1ml dose contain approximately 25mg of cannabinoids.

Can I just use BHO wax instead of flower and let fully evaporate until RSO consistency?

What are you trying to do with it? Once a concentrate is fully purged, it can be used just about anyway you can think of.
