Pushing limits of the auto pot

Anybody ever plant 2plants in one 3.9 gallon auto pot? Did it work or is a bad idea? Just thinking it would be nice since I only have 2 pot system.

Be a neat experiment, but i think youd be disappointed in the end.

agreed. Cannabis does not share well with others.

I wouldn’t recommend it, I grow in that size auto pots and a single plant’s root mass generally fills the space. Above ground they’ll be fighting for space and air flow would become an issue in flower :love_you_gesture:

One plant per pot is your best bet.

Welcome aboard, 3rd newer grower from Mn in past month i have replied to. Possible to grow both, but, those 2 will compete for bud spacing, most growers would be defoilating to get max air flow and for best light penatration.

When all ssid the 2 plants would most likely be trimmed into one with 2 root masses competing for space…

In addition to the airflow problems referenced above, you will have roots that become entangled and compete for water and food.

I’d also note that the plants (particularly with autos) will likely mature at different rates which would also create problems in such a setup. Autos can mature at differences of up to 10 weeks in extreme cases. You won’t want one plant’s roots decaying while the other plant struggles to ripen flower with unhealthy roots.

This is the roots if a single autopot plant in a 5 gal… Where will the roots for the other plant go?

I have seen people do one of these to keep mini mother plants in.

You could also give the aquaplate a try.

I think in terms of pushing autopot to its limits you could go a few of ways of thinking.

  1. start seed in pot that it will stay in. The sooner you get the system turned on the faster and larger your plant will grow and in shorter time. The transplant process would add time here at least a week or two.
  2. Use coco. While I have not used coco myself others swear by it and its easily demonstrated by others it is better. Why dont I use it, i like to only change up one thing at a time. Once I master soil, Ill move on to coco.
  3. reduce the amount of substrate used in your pot. By that I mean, try a 50/50 ratio of soil to perlite. When you are filling a regular pot the soil is where the plants get nutes, its in the soil. With an autopot, the plant drinks the nutes from the bottom, for the most part. With less absorbant medium the soil stays less wet and the roots move through it easier while still applying the same amount of nute solution. (Thats my thinking anyhow)
  4. airdome. Autopot suggests 15gph air into the airdome. I went much more with no issues. I went 70gph and the plants didnt seem to mind at all.
@LiesGrows @matty777 @Graysin @BigCat420 any comment on my musings about autopots?

I think the autopot divider is the way to run multiple strains in one pot.

I think that because of the autopot system, yield will not be as limited as it would be if you were to divide an average 3.9 gal pot into quarters. If you do your diligence and keep the autopot tray and reservoir topped off, the plants will all drink as much as they would if they were kept individually. But, acknowledge in advance that 4 plants will be 4 times thirstier than just 1 plant. So if one plant requires a refill of the reservoir once every couple days, expect to check your reservoir once a day at a minimum to make sure it wasn’t drained dry (especially in flower).

However, folks are not wrong that they will compete. Especially above ground, they’re going to need to be trained away from eachother with a severe angle - I’d go 90° away from the other plants for all 4 plants. You’ll have to really be thoughtful about how to train them to get maximum yield out of the close proximity plants.

I personally wouldn’t run more than 1 plant per 3 gallon pot there just isnt enough room per plant even if they where ran 12/12 from sprout you will yield more with 1 plant per container autopot does have the Triple pot tray id look into something like that over running more than 1 per pot

For me it will just be easier to have my mother plants in a 1 gal. I might look into smaller rain science bags but id really like to make use of what i have. For my autopots im running two of these air pumps rated at 602 GPH. One per tent per 4 autopot sytem

Is the air pump for the reservoir? Or is there an element to the autopots i wasnt aware of?

Used to keep fertiliser in tanks stirred up , something like 15 minutes every 2 hours.

@brownsfan100 @Adam1jam i am actually using the air base and air dome in the autopot setup and i do believe thats what @Docnraq is referring to as well. Although i do have a submersible pump for the reservoirs and wave pump to increase circulation

I use an aquarium tank wave maker. Its silent and uses barely any energy at all. Keeps everything stirred 24 hrs a day.

Yes! I think they are a fantastic addition to the autopot. A no brainer too.
