Most people use 3gal pots for autos. I use 5gal fabric pots for photos and autos.

When I grow autos in coco I use 7 gal fabric pots. When I grow autos in soil I use 5 gal instead.
Either way, I start them in solo cups and transplant once into the final pot.

My autos love the fabric pots. The roots do far better than in plastic pots because they never circle around, they just air prune when they make their way to the fabric.

Why different size for coco vs soil?

My guess would be the Coco dries out faster than the soil so it’s in a bigger pot. @Cap_Ron I’m just guessing so please correct me :rofl::rofl::rofl:

I’m just starting my first coco peat grow in a 5 that I added peralite to, hope I didn’t mess up

I’m strictly soil so I’m in the blue when it comes to Coco or hydro. Those two scare me because of how fast they grow or go wrong

In coco you have to feed way more often than in soil. I use the bigger 7 gal pots when I’m growing in coco so I can get away with feeding twice a day.

In soil, I’ve found that the 5 gal pots are plenty big enough for the plants grow large, but just small enough for them to be thirsty every night.

@WilIy, when you say coco peat are you referring to the pre mixed Mother Earth Coco Peat?

You can do 3 gallon pot for both living and coco but 5 gallons is much better for living soil. The reason for bigger gallons for soil is the microorganisms will thrive better.

Yes I am. Is that kinda the same as soil or no

Yes, it’s considered soil, but you get some of the benefits of coco. Most importantly, if you’re using Coco Peat in fabric pots, you don’t have to worry about over watering your plants. For example, if you check on your plants to see if they’re ready for a feeding/watering and they’re almost ready, but not quite, it’s perfectly ok to go ahead with it, while in plain soil it would be better to wait until the next morning. There’s enough coco in there to keep a sufficient amount of oxygen in the root zone even with the soil saturated.
Depending on your water source, and what kind of nutrients you’ll be using, you might want to add a bit of Cal/mag every other feeding or so. Not as much as if you were growing in plain coco, but maybe a half dose, because the coco that’s in the soil will steal some calcium and or magnesium along the way.
It’s very good soil. I’ve been using it for years. I now alternate my grows. I do one run in coco, and then the next one in coco peat. I go back and forth because the coco grows are exhausting feeding twice a day for 3 months straight. So after a coco grow I switch back to soil to cut my workload down to one feeding per day.
I’m actually starting a soil grow currently, but my local grow store was out of the Coco Peat, so I went with a Roots Organics mix that’s extremely similar to it, with coco mixed in.

Ahh ok, so 7 gal pot is because your using coco coir not coco peat, that’s where my confusion was…I see why now thanks :+1:

Thats all i use peat moss some peat loom dirt very sandy ,perlite an cow shit mixed up

Pot size and plant count are dependent on the grow space available. I have a few 2 x 4 tents and closet and cabinet and run 2 plants each in 3 gallon pots. I’ve ran 6 in 1 gallon pots but it gets cramped and feeding occurs everyday

2 in 3 gallon pots

6 in 1 gallon pots with a 3 week veg and the light flipped
