Hey everyone hope all is well. Like usual I’m changing plans daily for my current and future grows. Originally I planned to build a better outdoor structure this spring that had more insulation and is a bit bigger. Due to some local issues that will not be happening now.
I decided to go downstairs in the basement where I’m hidden have more room and temp/rh is more regulated. Growing in a basement made me worry about the smell going into my house and still kinda does but hopefully with a couple carbon filters I can make it work. I like having it away from the house for smell but everything else should be easier in a basement.
My room will be about 10x9 when I’m finished. For now my plan is to build the room and use my two grow tents in there. This should help with the smell. It’s going to take a few days to frame everything up and run some electrical. Anyone else notice how much lumber and other building materials have gone up? Almost 50% on some things
Any recommendations you have from your experiences with building a grow room let me know. Nothing is final and I’m open to suggestions.
Carbon filter(s) a must. As long as you seal things well it’ll amaze you. Buy one more than you will use so you can swap. They only crap out when you’re in full blown flower. I have tents at the moment but will probably be converting the room to a grow room and moving them elsewhere. I agree the foiled insulating panels are ideal, especially if you use the foil tape on the joints.
Sounds like your building a lung room for your tents? I have my homemade grow box in my basement. With a carbon filter it takes all the smell away except when I leave the door open for long amounts of time or when I’m tending to the plants outside of the box. I’ve never smelt it upstairs until I started drying in a spare bedroom upstairs I would say putting your tents inside a room in the basement would work fine for keeping the smell down. It should be easier to control the temps and humidity in a smaller space.
I’m salivating Capt! Yes wood framing material has tripled. I locked my construction project framing material a year ago with a whole sale lumber mill. For my personal projects like yourself I purchase retail unless I sneak a few pieces home from the construction site. Have you looked into metal studs? May be cheaper, a little more difficult to frame and drywall. I used a thin reflective insulation wrap inside, you can tape the seams with silver reflective tape. I’ll try and circle back with some less expensive options for ya. Will power be an issue? Typically most residential wall outlets and switches are 15 amp. I use mostly low wattage devices and usb devices.
I recently walled off a large section of basement for my grow room. I have 2 tents in the room. I have been battling the heat ever since. I have a furnace and a water heater in the room, adding to my heat problem. I’m replacing my whole room exhaust fan with a larger one, carbon filtered so I can pump some heat into the rest of the cool basement. I’m also putting in a larger cool air intake for the room. Each of the 3 tents has an exhaust up an out one of my fireplace chimneys.
So the morel of my story, take a look at your airflow in and out of the room too
Power is not an issue for me. I will be running a new 20amp circuit dedicated to the room and a second if I need to. Still trying to figure out if I’m going to use plywood or Sheetrock for the walls. I have a little time to figure out final details. Framing will take me a couple days then I’ll run the electrical. Still need to find a solid door or make one from plywood.
Sounds like a great plan capt as mentioned quality carbon filter negative pressure in the tent exhaust outside you’ll have smell under control. I have about the same lung Room with tent inside. basement area. Good luck with your project.
i grow in my basement. we just put up a plywood wall and used a 6 inch carbon filter. no smell anywhere else in the house. its not even a sealed room but the filter takes care of it
I keep a spare exhaust fan still new in the box. I have not needed it but I know when you order something now it can take a couple weeks or longer to get it. Without exhaust fan would not take long house would smell like a den of skunks.
OK Cap. Here is what my wife came up with when a visiting relative asked what that smell was in the house. She put two bags of charcoal briquettes in an open topped plastic tub out of sight in the living room and the study.
What smell that makes it to that area of my home is just barely noticeable now.
We’ve used charcoal in the fridge for years. She thought it might make the difference. It did help.
