I have grown many different strains, both Feminized and Autoflower and they all did not put out the Aroma of flowering plants.
I live in Hawaii and my indoor grow tent has an average temperature of 76% F to 80% F. The humidity is between 50-70.
When I grew a few Autoflower and at 5 weeks I gave my friend one to grow it outside. I told him to flush soil at 6 weeks and harvest it at 8 weeks since that was the stated time for harvest at that time.(now 10-14 wks)
At 8 wks my 2 other Banana Kush were beautiful, just no aroma. But when he brought back the one I asked him to grow outdoors it was very sticky and I could smell the aroma of it as he walked up to my house.
I am using a MarsHydro SP6500 LED Light.
Can anyone tell me what my problem is? I would greatly appreciate it.
I am one that likes the taste, but without that good smell(aroma),there will not be a good taste for me. I have tried growing indoors for 3 years and can not get that Cannabis Aroma out of any strain that I have tried growing! I have in the past grown outdoors and all the plants put out that beautiful aroma!
This is a very interesting observation. I’m following cause i wanna know to.
Temperature will kill terpenes which are mostly responsible for scent, but your temps look plemty reasonable. What is your growing media and nutrient schedule?
You dont mean from sprout do you? If so you are harvesting too early, by almost a month. Could account for lack of smells.
I use the Coco Bliss at 3 parts(75%) and Coarse Perlite at 1 part(25%)and a little Pure Worm Casting. Then I reused that medium by adding 50% FoxFarm Ocean Potting Soil.
Per the nutrient schedule, I went by the instructions of the FoxFarm Trio.
Regarding that 6 week soil flush, I write down the date that I transplanted the seedlings into the larger pots and attach it to the pot so that I basically know the age of the plant. So that is what I gauge the grow period of the plants.
This not really how it works. A plants age is from when it sprouts. Flowering time typically from when it starts producing flowers. A photo plant could be 6 months old and not flowering.
Ive never had an regular auto take less then 12 weeks from germ to harvest. Usually goes like so
1 week germ
1 week seedling
2-3 weeks veg
7-10 days transition (stretch)
8-10+ weeks flowering
Harvest when Trichomes are mature +20% amber (i like the couchlock)
It really seems like you are being too rigid with your schedule. Autos get done when they wanna, seen some flower for 12 weeks from other members on the boards. Outside of temperature, I think this is the cause. Got a few pictures? Might help to offer more insight with a visual representation. Have you photographed your harvest prior to chopping the plant?
I never really got into Cannabis when growing up. Didn’t care for that zone(or couch lock).
Because of my injury and surgeries my doctor registered me for the 329 Card because he wanted me to try the CBD Oil to see if it would give me some relief from the pain and discomfort. It didn’t so I thought I would give Cannabis a try again. I found benefit from it this time! This is when my indoor growing actually started, about 3 years now.
The autoflowers were 8 weeks just a year ago and now they are from 10-14 weeks. I have been following the harvest schedule, but use a jewelers magnifying glass to find when it is the best time to harvest.
I thought to give you more information about myself and how I am at understanding age and when to harvest.
I have attached pictures of my last harvest. I was using the wrong type of LED Lights for almost the 3 years then purchased the MarsHydro SP6500 LED Light in January which helped me achieve my best harvest, just no aroma to it.
The strain I grew is the Runtz Fem.
Most helpful, and I am very happy that you have been finding relief with Cannabis. I firmly believe it is the closest to a “cure all” medicine humans have at their disposal even in the modern day.
Interesting, but not surprising. I think in the efforts to increase potency across the board the breeding has turned to focus on that. It would explain the increase in flowering times for most autos.
Nice light! I was looking at an sp3000 and right before I hit the purchase button my wife looked at me and said, I like the bar lights better. Her intuition is fairly strong so I went with the fc3000. Many here swear by HLG lights but the cost is just too high for me. I dont think lighting is your issue just sharing back
Your plants look amazing! Some still with white hairs but, with your prefrences, Im not sure thats the total issue here.
Curious, what are you feeding your ladies? Are you offering them specific nutrition, at key growth phases, to feed terpene production?
Ive read many times here on the boards that over feeding can screw up your terpene profile. Makes for huge flowers but reduces the smells and overall taste.
Im gonna tag people that I know to be very skilled in the grow. @dbrn32 is one of them. @Covertgrower @BobbyDigital @Budz @MidwestGuy @MeEasy @imSICKkid @Caligurl. These are some of the best on the boards. Covert has never not had an answer for me and I consider them to be a mentor, all of these have helped me in some way over the last year and a half. They can and will help you solve this riddle.
My last comment in this post is this. It seems like a switch from autos to photos might help you. As well as a switch from feminized to regular. A pheno hunt is what I propose. Feminized seeds show less vigor then the regular counterpart. You will need to find the best smelling, reveg into a mother and clone her like Dolly the sheep!
Im set to watch this thread, as I see a great opportunity for my own education, but if you have any questions for me specificly tag away my new friend. Take in that Hawaiian sunset for me will ya?
I am not very kowledgeable in using a computer nor understanding it’s language. I know there were a few of you that came out to try and educate me in the art of growing Cannabis, so I want to thank you all!!
I also appreciate the knowledge you have shared and given me, again Thank You!!
When I started this venture I chose ILGM to make my seed purchases with and have never left because of all the information you so freely give out and I have been learning from.
I wish to thank every one of you who took part in helping me!!
My personal opinion is when your biodiversity goes down in the root zone, meaning fungi and bacteria counts are down this is when terpene content becomes affected. When your bacteria and fungi are healthy populations, not only is your plant happy and able to absorb nutrients properly, but your cannabinoid content is also higher.
Your grow may vary.
My plants seem to have little to no smell either,
Turns out I’m old and have inhaled way too much solvent and exhaust at work I guess.
Others tell me they smell it all the time.
@jamessilva. “It’s in your gene’s, man”.
But seriously, I find seed genetics is the major factor controlling smell and taste, and this is followed by grow technique.
For example, I have done Black Widow plants on three different runs from the same seed order. The first plant had a decent smell, taste, and yield. The second had a great smell, taste, but a small yield. The third had very large colas and a big yield, but very little smell or taste. The Bruce Banner always seems to have a good smell and taste. But it’s plant’s size and growth rate can be quite different between seeds. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
Like @Docnraq suggested when you find a plant that has the smell and taste that you like, clone it. Since you will know it’s genetics. This will eliminate the question of seed genetics from the equation as you move forward with your grows.
Smell can vary from what I have gathered from my own research. Also as others have said you probably are harvesting too early. That said it seems there is a push to have faster flowering plants these days. Mephisto genetics go from seed to harvest in 65-75 days, my ILGM blue dreams were harvested at 75 days after sprouting. Then you have the “fast” photos people are pushing etc.
In the end though the plant will be done when it’s done from what I’ve seen, sometimes that may mean 10 weeks or it may be 12 weeks etc etc.
Side note my last and only grow ( that has gone to the smelly stage so far) were ridiculously potent from a very early age but again my plants didn’t take long from start to finish
I think genetics plays into the majority of those traits. The same plant doesn’t produce absolutely identical seeds… that’s why cloning a great genetic is better than seed (imho). Same with mushrooms. You can grow from spores (seeds) but the only way to truly replicate the genetics is with a sample from the fruiting body (clone).
I stopped fussing about plants only due
To my time constraints. I never feed full strength, I water until runoff (although now I grow outdoors but still give them tons of water) and obvi, I can’t really flush because their roots go down well past the specialized soils and into good ole’ ground dirt. I keep microbes root zones as healthy as I can with microbes (Recharge, Mykos, worms, etc)
I imagine there are so many factors related to nutrients and their effects on terpenes that we just don’t fully understand yet.
True that! Cloning a good cluster or giant shroom will change your entire mushroom growing experience!
I basically read the overview and little else. My mind is still elsewhere maybe I’ll catch up with everything shortly. But from what I’ve understand is the argument of under vs over feeding. If you are going to overfeed do it mid veg to early flower. as over feeding late will definitely reduce flavor. It will not effect potency though on the THC level. If anything it will indeed improve it. At a sacrifice for flavor and terpenes. Although at this point I don’t think it really matters. It’s completely up to individual standards. As long as you can grow plants that please you, that is all that matters.
So just focus on what format makes you happy…
