When doing a 2 part harvest how does that work with 48 hrs darkness, ice and drill or split the stem. Can i only do this once with the plant ? And do it to the second harvest of buds when i do
I guess the most important thing is that none of that is necessary. You could implement some or all of them if youād like, but thereās nothing extensive suggesting any of them will for sure change condition of your buds at time of harvest.
In most cases you would do a multi part harvest when some parts of your plant arenāt as developed as others. If/when you determine some of the plant is ready, take that stuff and continue on with remainder of plant until itās ready too. Whether or not you implemented any of those methods wonāt really change that. Damaging your plant may get your plant to ripen a little faster, but thereās still a matter of your plant being ready to harvest or not.
dbrn is right on, no need for 48 hr dark or plant abuse,
i will addā¦
usually it is better to harvest the whole plant and make way for another run,
the little bit that lower buds may develop is not worth the time and space.!
growers do this and think the lower buds matured better with the tops gone, but it is usually because the tops were taken too soon, before they fully developed.
if u look thru the forums u will find that mostly newbies harvest in stages.!!
why do u feel like u need to harvest in stages.?
got any āwhite lightā pics of the plant in question.?
how many amber trichās do u see thru your microscope.?
The one thing that will improve taste is water only for the last few days (hydroponic) and two weeks for soil, to flush the nutrients out of the transperation stream, and damaging the trunk or roots a week before will shock the plant and cause it to produce more resin, but lowering the water intake without wilting it will achieve the same result.
I feel like i need to harvest in stages because smaller under developed buds will be given time to grow as the bigger ones closer to the light have done
Yes i do have some pics
I havenāt seen amber trichās yet just some milky. I had to order a new scope cause iām to old and shaky to see thru one i have. But i was able to see milky trichs briefly
sounds like they will need another week or 2 or 3 to finish,
harvesting a week or 2 before the clones r ready gives u a place to dry and gives u ample time to clean everything for the next run.!!
take a small clipping of a calyx and set it on white paper, then use a pocket microscope at 100x.!!
u want ~20% amber, ~75% cloudy, 5% or less clear.
if u r looking at 10 trichās⦠1-3 should be amber, 7-8 cloudy, 0-1 clear.
if u want the heaviest buzz possible look for 40/60 or 50/50 amber/cloudy.!
@SlowOldGuy I feel that as long as a person can determine when the top buds are ripe and not take them too early or too late, a staged harvest is best. Now, if a person is growing small outdoor plants or growing perpetually indoors, then no, harvesting all at once is better. But if someone has huge outdoor plants and they harvest all at once, youāre gonna end up with buds that are over done and some that need more time. I understand staging your harvest isnāt the best option for every growing technique, but it doesnāt do to bash the technique altogether because it is a tried and proven method that a lot of growers use. Thereās no one right way of doing anything.
i totally agree, but there is always more productive ways of doing things.!
some old guy put it best earlierā¦
this means u need to adjust your growing method.!
with good-great lighting, proper training, and good environment, if the tops of plants r mature, the lower buds will not develop much (if any) leaving them longer.!!
this is probably why everyone that harvests in stages eventually quits doing it, they get better lighting and learn how to grow plants properly.!
iāve tried many ways to harvest, leaving bottom buds is not worth the electricity to run the lights.
u can āfeelā like stages is best, but u canāt argue with the experts that have tried every methodā¦

You forget that I pointed out that a staged harvest is better for large outdoor plants not so much indoor plants with limited time and space.
This is not an example of what has happend to me, but an example of what CAN happen.
And yeah, I can āfeelā like this technique works because Iāve literally seen it work with my very eyes. I may not claim to be an expert but I know what works for me. Seems a little myopic of you to assume you know what techniques work for everyone.
i m not saying harvesting in stages canāt be done,
it is just not worth the time, electricity, fertās, spaceā¦
this is why only newbies practice this method.!
with proper lighting, training, and care the plant will mature from top to bottom,
outside u donāt even have to do training.
is any of this plant behind in maturity.???

Just want to add to the discussion. Im a newbie so take it for what its worth. My first harvest had too many plants in one tent. I shocked the plants with a stem split and ice a week before I harvested. I had 50-50 trichs and some discoloration in the leaves. After the 2 nights of darkness at the end of the week there was a lot of color and maybe 60% amber. I took the tops and kept the rest going with just water and no nutes for another 10 days while I germed new seeds. The bottoms discolored and after another 48 hr darkness period the remainder was harvested. I did this for each of the 3 strains I grew and there were 2 plants for each.
My lesson learned is this ā¦trim the bottoms early enough so you dont have any popcorn buds at the bottom and concentrate the energy to the tops. If they dont get enough light, all youāll get is bottoms that are behind the rest and sucking up energy that can better be used on making the biggest tops possible. Tho, I will split the stem and ice again and go 48hrs of darkness and right to harvest, itāll be one nice harvest.
The results of the Big Bud icesplit2day darkness techniqueā¦lolā¦
Puff puff passā¦
I harvest twice some times but i like the small buds for butter or vape juice i do trim to keep them down but you should get big buds anyway I sure donāt have a problem getting big tops i just leave them in the tent for another week. I Know every one grows different but you can do have both at the same time.
How can one tell if a plant is partially behind?
@SlowOldGuy is this a topic that can be explained?
in the final weeks of flower u can check the trichās from different parts of the plant.!
easy peasy.!!
my plants have always matured from top to bottom semi-evenly,
i never had a reason to harvest the tops and let the bottom portion mature.!
if plants r maturing only on top u r doing something wrong⦠low light, over-watering, āhot spotsā (tops r 80 F and bottoms r cold 50 F or less), diseaseā¦
Thanks a million @SlowOldGuy
I understand know, taught me some stuff. Thanks. I know wh as t to look for now.
