Methods of long term storage for buds

@MattyBear @Covertgrower @dbrn32
Are there tried and true methods of storing cured bud to keep it fresh? Do you just keep them stored in sealed mason jars? Is it better to use some sort of vacuum sealer to remove air like a food saver product? I just saw one that has a setting for muffins and breads so it doesn’t squish so much.

Most of us use jars. You can make up a big vacuum bag and place the jar inside it then vacuum seal the whole thing, remove the jar and it’s done without crushing the flower. Store in a refrigerator or a freezer that does NOT have a defroster.

You can store on the shelf in jars with Boveda packs for about 6 months.

In jars with something like a boveda pack is pretty good as myfriendis410 stated. You can use vacuum sealer too, just kill the vacuum before it smashes your buds. They make vacuum seal containers too, but never used them.

Pretty much everyone beat me to the answers. Would have said the same thing. I would use the vacuum jar attachments. I would think that would be the best choice. @Originalgazelle

I have Mason jars from 3 years ago. Weed is brown but not dry at all. Lost some of the taste but the buzz is still there.I have tried Vacuum bags but the Mason jar is king.

Do you vacuum seal the jars? With lids similar to these?

No I dont. I am sure that would not hurt. Plus I did what people say not to do. After the first year I needed the jars so I packed them full. About a pound in a gallon jar. Why? to cheap to throw it away. I have even decarbed a pound at a time and kept it in the jars for cooking.

If you have a vacuum sealer, you can get a mason jar attachment that will vacuum the jar. I do this when bud is cured well. Then I toss in a Boveda and an oxygen remover. All available on Amazon.

simple canning jars work great,
if the bud is at the right moisture level when going in it will last for yrs in jars.!

if u know it is going to be stored for yrs,
warm up the jars, like in warm water or microwave,
put buds inside, put on new bands/lids,
then let them cool to room temp, this pulls a vacuum in the jars and seals the lids, at this point keep them dark and cool, 60-70 F,
putting the sealed jars into cardboard boxes keeps them dark and insulates keeping the jar temp more constant.

@SlowOldGuy Never thought of warming the jars to create the vacuum, that’s perfect!
Not that I believe I will have any sort of surplus with my 1st time grow. I figured Hey,investigate this for the future.

Through reading several posts here, I have learned to successfully clone cannabis and ensure that the next grow would contain all females. This next Round I will Focus on the 4 flowering stages and how to feed them to maximize my yield.

I tried this vacuum sealing method.
I stored the buds in large clear plastic jars (reused costco nut containers) put the buds in the jars put the lids on and drilled a couple 1/4 in. holes in the lids. Placed the jars in the vacuum bag and vacuum sealed it till till the plastic jar just started to collapse. Then threw them in the freezer. You could do the same with quart sealers and not have to worry about the jar collapsing. As far as long term storage viability some one else with more knowledge would have to pipe in…

Thanks for this great question. It is on my mind now and my plants are only 2 inches tall and 2 weeks old. I love the mason jar idea with heating it up and letting the temperature change to cool create the vacuum. So a big shout out to @SlowOldGuy for that tip. So long term storage in mason jars is good. This is what I was looking for.

just remember…
storing for months is just lid and band, but when storing for years take the time to vacuum seal the jars.!!

the jars need to get as hot as possible, ~200 F
if u use a microwave i’d suggest heating the jars then filling them and re-microwaving for 30-120 seconds, then put the lids on and let cool.!

One of my buddys is a professional legal grower and he has had stuff in mason jars with Bolivia packs for 3 years that have stayed at 62% humidity.

If you perfectly cure the bud its easy and will store for a long time if done right.
Cure it nice and slow.

Keep your buds solid and big don’t make them all small, air dry nice and slow in a cool dark place, when an outer twig snaps throw it in a jar with a little humidor and burp it when it rises above 62%.
When cure is near done or done toss in a pack.
