Leaves are yellow from bottom up. Is it normal? Nitro deficiency? PH lockout?

Hi I’m new here and this is my first grow.

Strain; Type, Bag seed, ILGM… name of strain:
Dinafem Critical + 2 Fem and Royal Queen Seeds Northern Light Fem Auto

Age from Sprout:
46 days

Soil in pots, Hydroponic, or Coco / Brand and type of Soil & Size of Pots:
Soil in pots. Canna Terra Professional. Pots 7.5 inches diameter and about 6.5 inches height.

How often do you water and how do you determine when to do so?
When soil is dry to first knuckle. I tend to underwater as I’m afraid of overwatering. Often they droop slightly by the time I water then they come straight back up after hr or so.

PH of water and runoff or solution in reservoir:
Water is 7.0 - never tested runoff.

What is strength of nutrient mix? EC, or TDS:
NA

Indoor or Outdoor:
Indoor

Light system, size and height from plants:
300W LED VIPARSPECTRE 26 inches from plant hanging above

Temps; Day, Night:
26.5c, 21.5c

Humidity; Day, Night:
33%, 43%

Ventilation system; Yes, No, Size:
4 inch inline exhaust from fantronix with a buddy carbon filter. Tent is 80cmx80cmx160cm(H)

AC, Humidifier, De-humidifier:
NA

Co2; Yes, No:
NO

Using Canna Terra Pro, watering with only distilled water - PH 7.0. I got some ph up and down here but not used it. Read a lot about being too keen can kill plants with over watering or over feeding nutes so my first grow I’ve been keeping it simple with just water and so far I’m happy with results till I see these yellow leaves.

1 Critical + 2 Feminized
1 Northern Light Feminized Auto

Switched to 12/12 7 days ago - Northern Light already started flowering when switched.

We are now 46 days from seed.

So I read this can be nitrogen deficiency (which is meant to be in the soil). I also read this is normal at start of flowering or end of flowering. Also read it can be nute lockout from soil due to PH being too high (canna apparently recommend 5.8-6.2 in which case I’d be too high). Read another thing about Canna Terra Pro being a soilless mix and not a soil but not sure what the relevance of that is.

What I don’t understand is why is it showing now? My plant has lots of leaves, is about 16 inches tall and have looked healthy till now. If PH is too high or my soil doesn’t have nitrogen then surely the leaves would have already gone yellow weeks ago? Doesn’t make sense to me why its showing now.

Thanks for reading all that, please help and give me your opinion on what it is. I don’t want to take action if I don’t need to but I’ll get whatever I need to fix em.

@Cloud also include what size pots you are using?

Fill out that support ticket and it’ll make things much easier, but from first look, how big are those pots? from those photos they look extremely small. 7 is way too high, if you’re got ph down then you should be using it to correct your water. Also the drip trays under your pots. If your watering till the point of runoff then letting the pots sit in that water, then your roots will be getting water logged which can cause ph issues and root rot. Canna terra i a good medium, is use it aswell, but at this point I think it’d be wise to start a bit of a light feeding schedule as its not an overly hot soil. Other than that, those are some lovely looking ladies youve got there

Hey Bond, thanks for the response. Very insightful - first time anyone seen them so it is very interesting to see things mentioned I never thought about such as the size of the pot.

So what’s up with the pot size? I thought this would be big enough to see it through to flowering? I did notice the roots were coming out the bottom a while back but read that it is normal for that to happen. I thought the pot would define and limit its size only but not cause health issues.

Ok, I can PH down thanks. 5.8-6.2 I think is what Canna recommend depending on stage.

If your watering till the point of runoff then letting the pots sit in that water, then your roots will be getting water logged which can cause ph issues and root rot.

I do exactly that, I water the soil and it runs through the pot into the drip tray. I leave it there and it is gone within 30-60 seconds. I do that a few times then when it takes a couple of minutes to soak back up I stop. Long enough to cause water log? You know, most of the time I get run off immediately as I water - is that weird?

Light feeding? You mean add nutes? Ok, cool I can do that. Can you recommend what to add at my stage? I’m like 7 days into flowering (I think - well the Northern Light flowered whenever it wanted but I flicked the lights 7 days ago. I guess since its yellow leaves you are saying to add some Nitrogen?

For the average indoor plant a 5gal pot is perfect, so id say your a fair bit under that size. Plants getting root bound can not only stunt growth and limit yields but also cause problems within the root system. If your going to transplant id do it sooner rather than later, some plants that are more on the sensitive side can turn hermi from transplanting in flowering. it should be okay because your only in pre flower, but another opinion on that would be handy.
Sounds like your watering too fast mate, when you water be sure the water doesn’t run straight down the sides of the pot. Water slowly so the water soaks into the soil, once you get about 20% runoff (so if you water with 2L, wait for a few hundred ml’s of water to come out) and then let it dry out till the next water. A couple methods is sticking your finger in the top soil, if the first inch or two is dry its time to water. Another good method is feeling your pot when its wet and dry and determining when its time to water by the weight of the pot.
And yep some nutes would go good at this point, usually you can get through veg with good soil and not add any nutes, but you’ll need some for flowering. I use Advanced nutrients, comes ph’ed at 5.8 but I raise it a bit. They have a good base nutrient line and a good additive line, a bit pricey but its always worked for me. Id suggest starting out basic, going with the micro-grow-bloom trio or the sensi bloom due, thats what I’ve used this grow. Its got all the basic nutrients you need, also has nitrogen which you still need up until the later stages of flowering. Im off but ill check back in tomorrow to see how its all going :+1::v:

And one other thing, only use half the dose it says to use ,at first ,and build up to a full strength over next few weeks.

Which canna terra soil are you using? Pro or Pro plus?
As far as I understand pro plus is the soilless medium, pro is soil which should be ph 6.5
From the canna site -
Canna Terra Professional Soil Mix comes in two types - an all round pre-fertilised soil and a truly exceptional superior soil growing medium. Specifically designed for use with Canna Terra and Canna Bio Nutrients (although exceptional results can also be achieved using Bio-Bizz or Bio Sevia nutrients), both of these soil mixes ae sure to provide fantastic results for all who use them. Canna Terra Professional is the approximate equivalent of Bio-Bizz All-Mix, having a high nutrient content as well as good structure, aeration and drainage. it is the ideal soil for many growers as little (if any) nutrient is needed until you switch your plants onto a flowering/fruiting light cycle.

Canna Terra Professional Plus is something quite special that organic connoisseurs and expert growers are sure to love. Made from highest quality white peat and organic bark, Professional Plus has outstanding structure and drainage along with valuable trace elements and chelates to ensure consistently healthy growth. Having no nutrient content means that this media is for more advanced growers who can now tailor their vegetative growth for superior results.

I believe its pro not plus, as advertised on Amazon.

So i went out yesterday and got 2 12 inch pots which i believe is 5 gallons. Got 50L of canna coming tomorrow and im gonna transplant.

As i understand that wont solve my problem but will prevent further problems caused by root bound.

I’ve watered with lower ph yesterday so hopefully that will sort it.

@BondPacker BTW

The 5.8-6.2 thing is something i read on another forum. It was dialogue with canna someone had and thats what they advised and everyone on the forum was wondering why they made it so low.

Thats when someone else mentioned it is a soiless mix not a soil. But thats rather controversial considering its advertised as soil mix.

They also said if you lived in soft water area 6.5 is fine.

So im confused. Think i need to be patient and wait days to see if the lower ph helped.

Thanks for help!

Ive always ph’ed the canna pro (not plus) to 6.5 and its always reacted great to it. You could always do a little googling into it, but I’ve always treated the pro like soil cause its advertised as a soil mix, as where the pro plus is advertised as soilless. If anything, I wouldn’t feed the canna pro anything under 6.2.
Its easy to get confused when people talk about canna terra on forums cause a lot of the time they dont mention whether its pro plus or just pro, two similar names for two completely different mediums.
If it is just the pro that you ordered, which Id say it would be, then it will have good nutes to feed the plants for a bit but Id still recommend getting some bloom fertilisers as the plants are gonna be craving it once they start to fill out

When you get your bag @Cloud how about you post the ingredients and we can all discuss ! :v::+1::palm_tree:

I will do @bob31 if i get the packaging. Last time it came in a blue plastic bag with nothing on it.

My plants now look like this. What to do? Gutted!

@cloud Yeah, you’ve got something going on for sure.

I found this. I couldn’t find Canna-Terra Pro only Canna-Terra Pro Plus

Advantages of CANNA Terra Professional Plus

Exclusive, high grade ingredients such as airy peat moss and different types of tree bark (as a substitute for perlite) are components of CANNA Terra Professional Plus. They have an antiseptic effect and increase aeration qualities. This has a direct result in promoting exceptional root development and formation of thicker stems.
CANNA Terra Professional Plus is enriched with special feeding mixes, containing all the elements plants need during their first week, meaning no additional feeding is needed at that time!
The medium is also pH-adjusted for long-term control with a lime charge large enough to last an entire cycle.
It has a mineral-nutrient starter charge that adjusts the initial level of nutrients up to a good beginning charge, correcting the ratios to work perfectly with CANNA TERRA nutrients.

So the pH of your water for this would be 5.8 since the main ingredient is peat moss.

I would get your girls into bigger pots, 5 gallon minimum asap and make sure you water is pH to 5.8

Really that’s all you can do right now.

@BondPacker @bob31

The canna has arrived. With packaging this time. I’ve taken a cpl of snaps of whats in english on the back.

It says ph 6.0? Think i should go with that @BondPacker?

So my plan now is to transplant into 5 gallon pots and water slowly with plain water. I got some biobizz bloom but think i should wait to see what happens with ph adj first.

I have put in a weaker led for now and lifting my old one as i think there was also heat stress.

What do you think of my plan?

Actually you think I should add the biobizz? Canna packaging say to add nutes after intial drought whatever that means.

Well there you have it, it is soilless. Peat, perlite, lime and mineral ferts make for a completely soilless medium. Ive been ph’ing it wrong this whole time haha, with great results? Strange but I’m happy with that one. Shows I should read into the soil I’m buying a bit more. I suggest following the directions and ph’ing at 6.0.
As for the nutes, it has nutrients in the soil so id say give a good water till you get some runoff, with plain ph’ed water, then start very lightly on the nutes on the next round. Stick to a water/feed/water/feed schedule

Nice one @BondPacker for pointing me the right way. The plant with little buds has now been transplanted. It looked bad. Was about to water it after transplant and boom, my ph meter broke. Avoid cheap ph meters from amazon!!! I drove to a hydro store and got a decent for 40£ so now i am more confident. I gave it 3ml of biobizz in 2 litres of water before i saw ur reply. Hope they will be ok.

I also lifted my light to 140cm but its still too hot in there. I got extractor and cool air coming in. Might boost with an intake.

Im not sure i got a 5 gallon pot. I used a volume to pot diameter thing to work out what i should get but no way could i get 25 litres into this pot. 5 gallons is 25 litres right? This pot is quite big already and i only want a small plant. 25 litres would be huge dude? I only got a 80x80 tent.

I had one of those cheap yellow ones do me good for ages till I dropped it in the nutrient mixing bucket lol. Got a new one on the way, just been guessing how much ph up to put in till then.
Have you got a hygrometer to tell you the temps and humidity?
A 5 gal pot is about 19 litres, perfect for an indoor grow. What factors make you want a small plant, height? If it is height, you can train your plant to be no bigger then 2ft tall, but 3x as wide.
Come to think of it your already in flower, so the only training you can do is LST, and id recommend doing that very soon cause stems turn brittle and hard after the pre flower stage. Look up some LST on youtube and you’ll get plenty of info on how to do it

You guessed? How is that even possible? 1 trickle of ph up or down can make it go from 2 to 11 and vice versa.

Yup, got a smart hygrometer which is hooked up to my phone.

Its not just height but height is a factor. I also want simple and fast to harvest.

My plants looked fried. I’ll let you guys know what happens to do them.

They look fried?! post some pics asap, could be light burn or nute burn from the biobizz, or quite likely just transplant shock. cant tell without pics.
Also I mix my nutes up in a 25 L bucket, put about half a teaspoon of ph up in to get it up to 6.5, so even if I’m making up a bit less say 12-18L I can kinda gauge how much needs to go in. Well anyway I won’t be putting as much in as I now realise its soilless haha
