New to forum ILGM. Also an outdoor organic grower for years MMC 5+ years. Many learning experiences to say the least. I am now starting an indoor grow because my Cafe/bakery is closed due to the unfortunate world wide circumstances. So now I’m taking the opportunity to get a run, or runs in before the next winter and transferring back to the bakery. We were only open a few weeks before disaster struck. I am currently using my business space for an indoor operation. Easily done due to the wide space, access to water and cleanest environment for growing I have had the opportunity to work with. Right now I am working with 2 month+ seedlings and just started to clone off them . The goal is to flower mothers once I’m done getting the cuts I need for my outdoor grow. Also get some of the clones to flower indoors as well. The problem I have is limited funding for soil and tools. I do have an abundance of HPS , t5, florescent lights, and fans. I’d like CHEAP alternatives for beds inside but nothing too permanent. I’m open for low cost soil mixtures or recipes. Organic is my goal. Give me some ideas suggestions and I’ll try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. I just started this “indoor” journey so bare with me.
Your outdoor soil should be just fine for indoors…
@garrigan62 has a good one. Look up ‘Kind’ soil. If mixing your own the only caveat I have is to try to buffer it for the PH range cannabis likes. You’ll be chasing deficiencies the whole time if not.
For production a SOG type grow would fit right in with what you want: root cutting for 14 days, flip them and put in media and flower out under a 12/12 schedule. That’s the fastest way I’m aware of although soil will slow the plants down some, over other substrates like hydro.
You gotta have light. If you don’t you at the least have light airy flower and at worst chase problems simply because the plants are starved for light. HPS would be your best bet although you’re gonna have to pay for the electricity.
@MattyBear any thoughts? Who else has a good soil recipe? @dbrn32 how about you?
Thanks for the quick response! Can’t wait to absorb inputs and information from experienced indoor growers. I have snubbed indoor for a long time due to high outdoor success and my hate for certain “organically sourced “ liquid nutrients people use. I know it’s a hard ask for short notice soil ideas but I’m hoping the answer will be out there somewhere or at least the opportunity stem from others accounts and ideas. Outdoor soil took a long time to build (still building) and I don’t know why I didn’t think of it as suitable for indoors.
There are fine alternatives commercially. Fox Farms has a couple of soils and while not ‘organic’ it’s sourced organically as much as they feel possible. It’s good stuff. Milled nutrients if done properly produce some of the finest cannabis I’ve ever had. But I endorse growing as you want to. You should get a response from people that know more.
If you want to catch someone’s attention just use the @ sign in front of their name. @Covertgrower for example. Tag, you’re it!
@Kellybee06 all for organic soil Kelley bee I’m working on my own recipe to make your own soil from scratch funds limited laid off work virus fox farm is to exspensive for me
My own recipe I mean so when there talking supersoils what is that mean factory man made or you make it tourself
Just use strait dirt grass clippings some sawdust mulched leaves that’s what I got here I live in the northwest it’s dry a lot no moisture at all
@kcj I’m not quite understanding what you’re talking about. Honestly trying to avoid commercially made soil although my options are not limited here as far as organic, just expensive. Used fox farm, happy frog, before I mean they have made great seasons before I’m just looking for cheaper alternatives without derivatives from urea and other false “organic” claims. If I can access the things I want I’ll probably be pulling this off on my own way but ideas and opinions on indoor grows in super soils is what I’m looking for. Hopefully this place will be a big resource.
Just got this reply ! Sorry ! Thanks!
I recommend Fox farms ocean forest soil. It’s what I’ve used for years and have excellent results with it. Welcome to the forum!
I like Promix HP. I find that it is inexpensive in my area. It is a blank slate so you can do, what you like with nutes. Take a look at Jack’s nutrients. 3 parts and inexpensive. I’m going to try it on my next run, @imSICKkid uses it with great results.
@Skydiver could maybe help with soil
Hello @Kellybee06 welcome to the forum.
I’m happy to help if I can. organic is the only way I’ve grown (except for my first grow…miracle grow soil…oops…but it finished)
Do you have a list of organic ingredients you’ve used or have around from previous outside grows? There are recipes that people use here to build their own soil and have had great success. The thing is that unless you already have the ingredients from before it can get expensive in the beginning to buy the ingredients needed. There are things that one can use that we use everyday and throw away that can be used to incorporate into the soil build and or top dress as they grow along with brewing teas etc.
Do you have a compost pile that’s ready?
Aside from building your own soil with the needed nutrients that the plants will need to finish there are pre built organic soils that are available out there made by various companies. Depending on your location there may be someone not too far from you that makes them.
Not sure what your budget is for soil.
I’ve been running the old soil from previous grows again without emptying the pot (no till) by re amending the soil still in the pot with mostly Down To Earth dry nutrients during the grow and at then end after harvest just before planting new seedlings or clones. I’ve also dumped the pots into a large container and re amended the soil in there for another run. Still figuring things out but that seems the least expensive way to go for me.
Depending on how you plan to grow them out…quick flips or extended veg for bigger yields will help decide on how nutrient rich the soil needs to be along with top dressing nutrients as you go.
Some pre made soils (super soils) can be worth a look that won’t require you to acquire much in the way of additional cost of organic nutrients so this could be a way to go at least for the first run.
Here are some available out there…just google them and see where they are located and maybe they are near you or have shops locally that carry them.
Kind soil
Purple cow Organics
Detroit nutrient company
So hum soils
They differ somewhat in the set up with some using 100% of their soil for the grow while others use a percentage of their soil and the remainder using another cannabis friendly soil up top.
Most are water only from seed to harvest so you won’t have to initially invest more money in nutrients but if reusing for another grow you will need to.
The fabric pots are a great choice and they range from a couple dollars a piece to double/triple that and of course are more the larger the pot.
Again pot size will be decided on how your planning to grow them…short turn around = smaller pots less soil/nutrients needed. Longer veg = bigger pots more soil/nutrients needed.
Hope this helps a bit
Thanks for jumping in!
For me, the cheapest “semi” turn key solution is from buildasoil.
They have “coots” mix. You buy their nutrients and minerals theN add in 1/3 spagnum peat moss, 1/3 high quality compost, and 1/3 aeration(half rice hulls/half lava rock).
This will start you off with a no till living soil. You will also need to add worms, I did 2500 per 2’x4’ planter box.
I know you are on a budget, but if you start with a good soil and don’t cut corners You will save money in the long run.
