So I have a shed that i converted into a grow room. It’s been a sealed grow but I’m wanting to change it over to allow fresh air in. But what kind of cover or something can I use on the side wall to pull fresh air in with letting light or bugs in ? I know I news in-line fan to pull it in but not sure what to look up or anything. I’m worried pests will get through the screen of anything. Any ideas?
Could you put a floor vent like in a trailer? Then just get some fine mesh and cover the damper?
I would rather have it on the wall. But even on the floor I would still think bug’s could get in and not sure how to hook a in-line fan to the floor without it being in the way. Main thing is bugs I’m worried about I’ve been lucky with all my grows not having to worry about pests and trying to keep it that way.
You can use the same kinda vent/damper and put screen material. Just double layer it and that will help with the light. Without running a completely sealed system, though, there’s really no guarenteed pest stopper. But, if you do go the route with the vent and damper, Raid Bug Barrier around the outside is good stuff. We have an old house with cracks and splintered hardy plank and siding they don’t even make anymore and it works real well.
I use my bedroom window with a standard window screen. The mesh is pretty fine, so nothing gets in that way.
Something like this

You’re not wrong to worry. Just be sure however you enable the air exchange, it’s got some netting or mesh and you’ll be golden.
I use something similar when I’m building rooms on decks. I use it under the deck boards to keep bugs out. Works well!
Awesome grow @ThatHydroCouple
I think you need a soffit vent with a 90* on top to come in over top of wall and then wher ever. I would make an inline air filter using a flat style air filter for a car inside a box mounted to the wall then 90* down the wall
6" vent from Home Depot with dark window screen taped over the vent hole. I used to use it as a fresh air intake…now it’s my reservoir chiller exhaust vent. Cheap and it keeps bugs out @ThatHydroCouple
Go to the AC Infinity web site they have a lot different fan systems look at at the crawl space fans they have others that mite work for you
I use a shop vac hepa filter that slides onto a 8" pipe that goes through the wall to outside to bring in freash air…
The fillter is capped on one side , if that makes sense…
Ill get you a pic…
10 bucks at HD…
It looks like an oversized dryer vent from the outside …
@ThatHydroCouple excellent looking plants ,look very healthy
Thanks I’m still kicking around ideas. the overall shed size is 12x32 and currently 12x12 is my grow room. I’m going to be putting up insulation and drywall on the other 12x20 section I’m not sure if I want to make it 12x20 or divide that into another 12x12 so I will also have a12x8 room also giving me a total of 3 rooms. If I do three rooms then I need to get a mini split with a 3 zone instead of two. It’s weird as growers we never have enough room lol. But main focus right now is fresh air in and stale air out. I’m also worried about pulling in air bc in summer in stlouis it’s hot and humid and winter it gets down right cold. Pulling in that air might make my heat or ac constantly run.
You have a beautiful set up. Happy growing.
I use pleated filters. Seems any type of screen will let the smallest bugs in like spider mites. If your going to use screen maybe regular treatments of pesticide on screens and floors and walls. I have recently because of a spider mite invasion that im still recovering from i now spray walls and floors with neem before mid and end of grow.
Lol maybe I’ll stick to sealed grow it’s been working so far
I simply cover the intake side of a dryer tube with a “head cover” (nylon mesh) like a pair of Nylons used under a womans wig. It will filter out all dust and debris.
Also when i upgraded exhust fan (vivosun 4" to a infinity 6" ) i repurposed the 4" as an forced intatake fan at bottom of tent. This also allows me to not remove upper leaves due to air flow to bottom of plant as the forced intake supplys all the fresh air the plant will need.
These controllers come in handy for controlling your air in and out @ThatHydroCouple. This one is to pull hot air out when the chiller is running. I have one monitoring the reservoir temp and it turns the chiller on and off. They don’t cost much and they work well.
