I currently have a pot of living soil waiting to be put into a 30 gallon fabric pot. I am getting a variety of auto and photo seeds and was curious how many of either could I realistically grow. I am in a 2x3x5 tent with a 100 watt spider farm light. I am aware I need more wattage from what I’ve read but that’s not in my budget at the moment.
One plant is most realistic. You will struggle to flower even 1 plant with only 100 watts. You will get more yield with 1 plant than you will with multiple plants at that wattage.
Regarding your question - it is best to have 1 plant per pot. Multiple plants in 1 pot leads to entangled roots which will compete for water and nutrients. It is a further problem if the plants mature at differing rates. Airflow can also be a problem with overcrowded plants, leading to mold risk.
So I should try to get another 100 watt to daisy chain and then I’m still only good for 1 plant?
I would run only 1 plant even with another 100 watt light. 200 watts per plant is a minimum.
Thank you for answering even though it was slightly discouraging lol.
Should I just run auto or photo due to the limit on plants. Like would the speed of an auto outweigh the yield of a single photo? I was also curious if I should veg a photo longer in a large pot like 30?
Photos are generally more productive than autos and autos come with their own unique set of problems. You can veg a photo in a big bag as long as you like, but there will be constraints. I will elaborate:
A cannabis plant will often double in size during the first few weeks of flowering, so you will need to keep in mind your height limitations. You will additionally need to be careful with having inadequate wattage. A poorly lit plant will grow taller more rapidly, as it will add significant height searching for more light intensity. As you only have a 5’ tent, height is going to become a problem and you will unfortunately need to flip earlier than you might, otherwise.
Just an idea to consider.
It might be better to only fill the 30 gallon halfway, with 15 gallons. In a 5 foot tall tent and limited lighting, vertical space will be a premium.
Techniques to encourage horizontal growth will help. A scrog or at least bending down branches (LST) will help a lot.
I guess I’m just being adamant on having red wrigglers in my soil but I guess it’s silly since I can make teas and grab worm castings anytime. I found the aeration to be a benefit and them chewing on the bad stuff but other than that it seems like I’m over complicating it like most people new to a hobby lol
Have fun with it! I put wrigglers in mine from my worm bin. I don’t actually know if it makes the grow better or not, but it seems like it should help.
Wouldn’t that be where I could top and lst? I’m mentioning these as if I’ve done them before but I’ve read about those types of trainings to help grow in a smaller space.
Now considering height as my biggest challenge, I have a carbon exhaust fan located inside of the tent. Would me placing it outside hinder its smell filtering capabilities? I’m trying to keep the smells low for when company comes.
Yeah put the fan and filter outside the tent, that buys some good height. Those techniques are all helpful to control the vertical growth.
And would still perform the same with smells as inside the tent?
As long as it’s hooked up right, it should work just as well. If it were me, I’d leave the fan and filter inside if it’s already set up. I’d wait to move it outside until I had to get the height.
Thanks @GardenDan, my second post that you’ve came through for me
You are most welcome. We’re all here to help each other.
When I grow two plants in one pot, ultimately one turns male. My two cents.
I wonder if there’s science to that, I’m definitely going to steer clear then
I’ll add my opinion.
You -can- grow multiple plants in one pot. You need a very large volume of soil relative to the size of plants that will grow. I’ve seen people have great success with big garden beds on YouTube.
I’ve done a couple rounds of two plants in one pot, they were small autos. Not an issue. I think I got lucky, and the better method would have been one plant per pot.
Even “worse” one female and one male in same planter.
Unless desired, not good for seed free weed.
I felt the same upon learning the fact of life.
Another kick in the pants, too.
When you grow great weed, guess how long it must hang, dry, and cure?
Not as long as Jamison, but 4 months to wait is an eternity for growers.
Me too.
