Help - Top portion of a cola is drying out while plant is alive

I’m growing a Bruce Banner auto (among others) and she is now in week 14 of flower (week 19 overall) - I’m still waiting for some amber trichomes (there are a few, but less than 3-4% by my estimate).

Tonight I just noticed that the top portion (about 1 1/2 inches) of a large cola is completely dried out, and crumbly - if I touch it, some flower breaks off. There is no other damage to that cola, and the rest of the plant looks fine:

Is this normal? This cola is not the highest, or closest to the light (it’s about 12-14 inches from the light), and other taller colas are unaffected). Should I chop the plant, or chop the affected cola?

Temp in tent is 80-82F, RH is 50-55%.

No fan is pointed directly at this cola - one is aimed above and one below the plants.

I would think at week 14 of flower it’s possibly ending its life cycle.

Shouldn’t the trichomes be mostly amber in that case?

Its dead and probably molded on top. Cut it at the red arrow and get it out of the tent. Had one myself last grow.

That’s brutal.

Sometimes they just dont go amber. Id probably harvest it

I removed the bud like you said, but I don’t see or smell any sign of mold.

I realized that I had recently put a small fan, about 10 feet away, blowing air into the lung room to keep it cool. But the tent door was left open (to reduce humidity) and the air from the fan was blowing right over a dehumidifier and into the open tent. The affected bud was the tallest one close to the tent opening, so I think it got the most dry breeze. That’s my current theory - they say not to point a fan directly at the plant, but since it was 10 feet away I didn’t consider this.

I also decided to do a partial chop, and removed about 40% of the buds to dry - leaving the rest to go a few more days.

Glad it was not molded. When you have dry crispy leaves in the buds the presence of mold is a real danger. It would have come soon if left as the dry leaves are where it likes to start.

“the dry leaves are where it likes to start.”

I thought wet leaves were the problem? Doesn’t mold need high moisture to grow?

High moisture or decomposing organic matter. Dead leaves will give it a foothold.

Sometimes they just dont go to amber. I would get a microscope if you don’t have one. Its easier to view tricomb

Sometimes trichomes never turn amber and at week 14 of flower that girl is done. Harvest her.

Having a fan blowing directly on the plant is not a bad thing. You want air flow all through the plant. This does a couple of very important things. It stops moisture buildup. It stops o2 buildup and gives the plants a headley atmosphere, especially under the leaves. And it helps the plant build strong stems as it replicates natural breeze. I have fans blowing directly on my plants from the time they ate about 2 weeks old.

As for the dry part i have no idea. I would just toss it.

Just my thoughts.

Ok, I decided to do a partial harvest. I cut off most of the larger colas, about 40-50% of the plant, and hung it to dry. I left the remainder growing and will harvest it in a few days to a week.

I have a request. Will you do something for us?

When you smoke the very first bit of this first harvest, and again with the second, will you take detailed notes of the effect?

Things like:

  • time from first of until effects felt
  • how long until it peaks
  • head or body high? Both?
  • energy levels
  • mental clarity
  • Couch lock

I’m interested in the results of a plant in flower that kind without amber. If also like to compare the two harvest of the same plant. Interesting to see if the potency of the high decreased and it’s more CBD.

Thanks

Hi I have something similar, I’m still wondering what could be happening
Here some pics see if u can help me

Sorry I’m new here don’t know where to star a new post!

@Liz1985
I’m not an expert, but the photo’s you posted look like early flowering, not anywhere close to harvest. How many weeks since flowering started?

I’m in week 5 Oreoz, but some bud are killing pistils look like nutrient burn to me!

Thanks for replying !!

@Bamarayne
Yes, I’ll be very interested to compare the first and final harvest, and I’ll post the results.

I removed most of the large colas in the first harvest, and left only a few large colas and a lot of less mature buds. But I’ll keep the remaining large colas separate from the others when I do the final harvest, so I can compare similar colas harvested at two different stages.

Actually, I did see some amber trichomes before the first harvest, just nothing close to my target of 20-30% (more like 1%-5%, depending on the bud, and it varied - some days I’d think I was close to harvest, then the next day I’d see hardly any amber.

BTW, I think the THC degrades to cannabinol, CBN( which is responsible for the sedative effect), not into cannabidiol, CBD.

I could not agree w/ spiney norman more. Crispy or dead leaves is always the first place bud rot starts. Burt tips or curling sun or bud leaves are trouble if there is any kind of humidity.

The room may be low rh but the inside of that cola is like a tropical weed forest.

I am glad you were sans mold.
