@InkedOldMan , I hung my First Lady today, and I have some questions about drying, after a week at 60 - 70 degrees and RH around 60%, how will I know it’s ready to buck and trim the buds? And… I am curing with 62% #8 bodeva, do I still burp about 3 times a day for the first week?
Burping your jars of cannabis during the curing process is crucial for several reasons:
- Gas Exchange: During curing, cannabis buds undergo respiration, producing gases like carbon dioxide (CO2). [If these gases aren’t released, they can suffocate the buds, leading to poor quality]
- Moisture Regulation: Burping helps regulate moisture levels inside the jars. [Opening the jars allows excess moisture to escape and fresh air to enter, maintaining the ideal humidity for curing]
- Preventing Mold and Mildew: Proper airflow achieved through burping minimizes the risk of mold and mildew development. [Mold thrives in moist, stagnant environments, so regular burping helps keep the buds dry and healthy]
- Chemical Reactions: Oxygen exposure during burping facilitates chemical reactions that break down chlorophyll and other compounds, enhancing the flavor and aroma of the cannabis]
By burping your jars, you’re ensuring that your cannabis cures properly, resulting in a smoother, more flavorful, and potent final product.
So I assume you are saying you chopped and hung for 7 days. Did you check stems-to see if they snap? Do you have a moisture tester you can check a bud with? I burp twice a day for at least a week. Jars are great way to cure just don’t pack the product in leave it loose with room at the top. Bodeva packs work well in keeping your buds fresh. You just don’t want buds in the jar if not dried properly it could mold.
I typically hang mine (entire plant) for about 7-10 days… Then trim off the buds and put in jars.
Will burp jars twice daily and gently shake buds around in the jar to keep them loose for another week or so. Times for drying and curing vary depending on environment and methods.
As previously mentioned, a general rule of thumb is to hang them until stems snap.
@Lostgirl you have been informative on other topics. I’m 4-5 weeks away from this stage so good for me to know too.
What’s the process?
Hang dry for how long? What to look for?
Trim sugar leaves before or after dry?
Cure in jars?
Store in grove bags?
It really depends on your drying environment. If you can maintain 60° and 60% humidity this will be easy for you.
I basically take my fan leaves off a day or two before I actually chop the plant.
I’m fortunate I can keep 60 and 60 with no issues so my dry is the same thing Time after Time after Time.
I cut my plant by colas and/or branches. I hang them on spinning racks.
I do this for five straight days with a small floor fan pointing at the wall just blowing air around the hanging buds.
After 5 days I put all the colas into a brown paper bags and I burp them every 12 hours for 2 hours at a time for 2 days .
That gives me approximately 7 and 1/2 days of dry time.
I then trim them put them in mason jars until they reach 58 to 62% humidity inside the jar. I burped the jar for 20 minutes at a time four times a day. (Normally after 3 days they keep 60%
Then I transfer them over to Grove bags where I keep them for 1 year (most only do it for a few months)…
That’s how I personally do it. It’s the same thing every time.
I strongly suggest that you buy a moisture meter to monitor the moisture inside your buds. I use to use them when I first started and it gives you a guideline of when the bud is dry.
The only time I wet trim is if I have a very sticky strand. For me, when the strain is incredibly sticky and I trim after chopping the bud stays sticky for a long time after dried. (That’s just me)
A lot of people get nervous on this dry cure thing but it’s actually the simplest part of the entire grow.
And rest assured once you do it the first time you’ll figure out different techniques to perfect the drying stage.
The only advice I can give you is avoid a fast dry as much as you can.
If your temperatures are going to be high in your dry room I suggest you leave the fan leaves on. This will give you at least one to two extra days of dry time
Nobody mentioned washing the weed after cutting down, before hang time.
I wash and follow as above.
how long do you leave open jars to burp them and for how many days? I read people cure for months but does this include burping daily?
I do not have an actual moisture tester, I am using hydrometers for RH.
At what point would I use a trimmer, after removing buds from the stem, before the jars? Or after it is completely dry and cured?
How are you washing your buds?
Different ways each time (twice).
H2O/H2O2 and rinse distilled H2O.
Other methods detailed on this forum (or YouTube) .
Tailor method for desired accomplishment.
Makes weed softer and cleaner, IMO/IME
8hour soak/drown utilized to drown them bugs last fall.
Before oven cook routine for decarbing and Kief mining.
Moister meters can be purchased from lowes or Home Depot if you have those around. About $30
They have two small pins on them and you insert it into the bud
I trim the larger stuff off when I chop it…then before I put it in jars I’ll do another more refined trim .
Thank you, I am feeling a bit lost in this part, I have 6 more plants spread out over the next month and a half to harvest. I have a bowl trimmer and bubble bags coming soon. My tallest is a northern lights, just 5 weeks and 40”. This has been addicting to say the least.
The length of time I leave them open depends on the humidity level. If within 65-55% just 15 seconds or so. Long enough to freshen the air. If they are over 70% leave open for 5 minutes. If over 80% leave open for 4 hours. Or you can take them out for 4 hours too. You don’t want them inside the jar if they are that wet. Once you’re down to 55% continue to burp for 2 weeks. If they are over 65% keep at it until the are below 60%.
