Grow tent suggestions

I read something quite awhile ago from Robert and he said something negative about LEDS. I think it had something to do with how the plants responded. The grow tent I looked at originally was 5’ × 5’ which took the 1000 watt lights (it was too big for my small house anyway) but the 4’ × 4’ dropped down to the 600 watt lights. The lights that Robert recomended.

I’m sticking with LED’s strictly for the heat factor and power consumption alone. I saw an article about LEDs vs. HIDs which helped make my decision. (I think Robert wrote it but I could be wrong) There are pros and cons for each so in the end it comes down to personal preference for me. Given the newer technology, the plants respond better than before with LEDs as long as you get a reputable brand. There are a lot of bad generic LEDs out there. Especially the cheap Chinese (no offense to any china natives on here) ones. Do your due diligence and go with what you feel comfortable with.

A couple years back I had a decent grow ith CFLs but I got lucky as far as how I got them. My old landlord gave me a case of 20 150w CFLs so I made a DIY setup and used a cookie sheet for the reflector, just cornered off a 2’ x 1 1/2’ closet space with cardboard. I had to destroy the plant prematurely since we were moving but what little yield I did get was nice. Didn’t even use nutes. That was my very first grow after 2 failed attempts overwatering (my Achilles heel lol) I also learned after taking it outside for flowering that every neighborhood cat, including mine, had a heyday munching on the leaves, why I’m strictly indoors now. Especially around here lol

LEDs are fine to grow with, they’ve come a long way. Well some of them. The quantum boards are going to get better and better over time and I think they will outperform HID lighting in the next few years, if they dont already.

@dbrn32 you are so right, I had to already move my new COB light up as far as it can go, and I could use some more height. Good luck

@anon35207245 it’s the 400 spectrum cob is all I know. @Countryboyjvd1971 made a suggestion and I pick it. I’ll post a photo. I have it has high as its going to go in the tent. It got really hot today, but it has a lot of ventilation. Humidity is running about 51 to 53 temp 88° Amazon.com

What is the actual room temp the tent is in @Jamie1234
The light does put off a little more heat then a standard led fixture but only runs maybe 5 degrees warmer then they do at least when i tested my cob versus my led fixtures
do you have a intake fan running forcing fresh cool air into tent or are you running passive vents
Also where are you taking temp readings ?
i always read under canopy so i can judge root temps i do pay attention to top of canopy dont want to cook the leafs lol

@Countryboyjvd1971 @Jamie1234 @garrigan62 I just have my digi thermometer sitting on the soil. Adding that AC hose and intake perfected the temp (77 F constant). I also took out the carbon filter until time to flower which helped with the circulation, but It’s grown twice in size in the 4 days it’s been in there.

BTW here are a couple 12 day old pics

Now The Ph is reading at 7.06 but my guess is using Ocean Forest and from what I have been reading, with FFOF and just growing autos in the first place, It’s best not to start nutes until at least 3 - 4 weeks in or even just hold off until flowering and go with the “FF trio lite” (one quarter of the FF recommendations) flowering schedule. I used around 1/2 gallon of distilled water (which boosted it nicely) and the soil still pretty moist below the surface so I’m going to hold off a couple days before adding more water.

If I happen to be wrong about any of this please let me know.

Also, how does one do a grow journal on here?

@Countryboyjvd1971, it usually stays around 80° I’m in the process of learning how to a better set up for cooling in my utility room. I don’t have air conditioning just oscillating fans 2 in tent and 1 outtake fan and 2 in the room, I don’t have anything in the other vent hose, I’m learning that’s a must, I guess? Thing is I don’t know how to set it up how I want it yet. I know someone said they offer the tent I got from Amazon with the setup as a package deal, I got the ph test kit and the temp thingy and. I’m doing my home work, I didn’t know you had to have air conditioning with using a grow tent. Couldn’t I just leave it in the dark room, in the tent the way I have been and open the front of tent a bit for plenty of circulating air? I really would rathere do it the way I’ve been learning, but I’m afraid I’d mess it up or stress her out. :open_mouth:

@Jamie1234 I started out the same way. Had my tent in the mudroom. Once the light was installed and turned on the temp hit almost 90. Even if you have exhaust, it’s going to circulate hot air. Best bet is to route a dryer hose from an AC vent into the tent and seal the other passive openings. It solved my temp issues almost instantly.
Or get portable AC. Also is your exhaust hose going outside the room? With summer coming its too easy to cook your little ones.

@Chip_Butterfield made. Agood suggestion @Jamie1234
You can do that but light leaks may cause issue in flower leaving tent open that is
Exhausting your tent to outdoors will help prevent recirculating the hot air.
And supplementing with ac from the house would be a good idea but you mentioned you dont have ac
You dont need a dedicated unit for the tent you just need to provide cool air for intake fan to pull into tent from whatever source you have access to if none your tent temps will normally be 15 degrees warmer then room temp

@Jamie1234 @Countryboyjvd1971 My biggest mistake was not considering the LEDs would draw heat. For all the trouble I should have just got an HCL with the same light efficiancy :joy:

As far as cooling source, what about sticking a cooler with a block of dry ice in the tent? Just kicking ideas…

Ty @Countryboyjvd1971 gotcha…I think I can do that. I’m growing in a utility room in my garage, I have plenty of air circulation in the tent just not a good exchange going out. It’s been nice the last couple of days.

@chip_Butterfield would it be more beneficial to run one of those vents to a vent that goes outside and circulate what air that comes in from outside. I just noticed the attic cover in the garage is missing, someone opened and didn’t put cover back on. Hot air is coming into the garage making it hotter

@Chip_Butterfield, I feel stupid…I just want to get it right, got more invested in this grow equipment than the seed lol. I’m determined to grow this beauty as she is determined to bud for me. Lol so @garrigan62 and of course @countryboyjvd1971 will something like this help?

@Jamie1234 dont ever feel stupid. everyone starts somewhere. 3 months ago i didn’t know what I was doing. Then I go on here, other forums, go on amazon and see product details and reviews, and just…learn. And I went through 3 bad sprouts before getting all the right equipment with my “gas” money instead of getting more gas. Now all is going good.

Feeling stupid solves nothing. Saying you can and will, well that can accomplish anything.

I don’t mean to step on garrigans toes. I have a vivosun4x4 and really like it. I would have got there 3x3 tent too but it doesn’t have any side access. I got this one here as a second tent. Side access can be a nice thing with a full tent.
Just another option

@Chip_Butterfield you are right about that, I know I can do it, just needing this knowledge I’m getting. You all are awesome! @garrigan62 @BIGE @Countryboyjvd1971 @blackthumbbetty this list goes on…I got this well I’m saying I do. I just have to buy each moth around bills. I’m looking into that portable AC.
