Normally for a lot of people it is 24 hours in water, then take it out, put in the moist (not wet) paper towel, fold it over, stick in a sandwich baggie, put somewhere dark and warm for another 24-48 hours. Should be sprouted by then. Hope that helps.
It’s all personal preference, if you prefer one way and have had good success with it, then it ain’t broke so don’t fix it lol. I like the cup method with a bit of h2o2 just to help loosen up those hard shells, I usually get way to excited and within the next 8-24 hours I just pop em in the pot. I have had 100% success this way (I haven’t popped more than 10 seeds yet btw so take this and use your best judgment) though I have had issues post germination with damping off so I’ll repeat myself, it’s personal preference.
Do whatever you prefer. There are potential flaws with all of them but you can also be successful too. A lot of the grow guides here are dated so not surprised to see some changes.
I’ve tried a few methods but have now gone to a CannaKan device. The stock one needs a few modifications for ease of use, but it’s very simple and convenient. I’ve been germinating all of my seeds in it now except some of my pepper seeds. Sunflowers, other flowers, vegetable seeds, literally everything that gets planted. I have another post on it here in the forums. But I agree with @dbrn32 , it’s personal preference.
It shows as sold out on the site, but I got mine from Seedsman.com as they had it in stock at the time. It was sold out when I tried to get mine directly from the Cannakan site, but Seedsman still had them at the time. Hope that helps.
