I just moved and I thought my soil was good. This year is my first grow in a few years. None of my previous grows went great. One was good, one went bad for a lot of reasons.
This year I’m determined to do better. I’m not medical so I am limited to 4 plants. I planted clones outside a few days ago. Immediately, I can see that there is a deficiency. My guess was nitrogen, but adding coffee grounds didn’t seem to help. We are trying to keep to natural soil remedies. Please let me know your thoughts.
I was afraid of that. The soil feels and smells good. The previous owner only did natural mulch when she lived here. I don’t want to use any mineral salt based fertilizer because of the runoff and wildlife in the area. I’m hoping someone can suggest a worm casting/bone meal tea or something like that.
I also tend to overreact and over correct, so I’m trying to be more careful this time.
I bought a basic soil test kit and will see what I can learn. I’ll update as I try new things.
You can still repot into a more appropriate container with your blended soil choice.
Here’s the issues with cannabis: we use these highly advanced genetics to produce our result but they only work if you can maintain a nominal environment for them. You can grow weed outside of that but yield and quality will tend to suffer.
You need a good handle on your input water, the PH and TDS (solids in solution) of your water, and by containerizing your plants you can protect them from weather and pests and thieves. Further if you are in an urban setting you have streetlights that will either never allow your plants to flower or you will get a high rate of hermaphrodites.
Soil test kits and drops or strips are not really accurate enough for our purposes and strongly suggest you invest in a good quality PH and TDS meter. NOT one of those 3 in 1 soil probes: worthless.
What does the soil look like under the mulch? Organic mulch is fantastic. I’m sure it’s good soil you have under there. I have a bunch of wild mushrooms and random flowers that grow at different times of the year cause my soil is decently fertile.
I would have suggested to digging holes and filling with cannabis friendly soil and let the tap roots get into the natural soil that is around.
Looks like you have some dank strains too, happy growing
That’s a good point. I got around to repotting today with a special soil mix. Fox farm ocean blend with worm castings and a mushroom based soil ammendment layered on top of garden dirt mixed with mulch. For good measure, I mixed in some down to earth bio fish fertilizer in all layers. Left the bottom of the fabric open so the taproots can go as deep as the plants want.
All of the plants look a lot happier.
Now that the sun is out, I can clearly see the girls are happy with being repotted. The new growth is looking very healthy. The Pink Starburst is still a bit droopy but I think she’ll come around.
All of my girls are doing really well. The Tiramisu seems to be an inch taller every day! Should I start topping any of the girls yet? What height do you normally top? I don’t have any height restrictions. I just prefer more colas come trimming time.
So, I’ve got a slug problem. I was wondering why one of my plants seemed stunted. Turns out she’s been trying to keep up with the unauthorized definition. I have to say she’s a fighter. I’ve been checking in the mornings and the evenings every day and killing all the slugs I can find. Just went out to get sluggo plus and scattered some around.
on a positive note, the slug attack made the base of the chocolate hashberry a giant knuckle. After the slugs are cleared up hopefully shell stretch out a bit more.
