First Time Grower- Planted too soon?

Hi there everyone.
I have been working on germinating seeds. I let 2 sit in water over night. In the morning, one of the seeds had cracked, and the other was working on it. My husband tells me to transplant it to a paper towel, so it doesn’t drown. What I did was plant the cracked one in a jiffy pellet and put the other seed in a damp paper since it hadn’t completely cracked yet. Did I do the right thing, or did I plant the first seed too soon?
I look forward to any and all answers.
Kindly,
K

I do exactly what you just did. When they crack I put them in soil if they don’t I put them in a wet paper towel in a dark warm place.

I would make sure the pellet is not rock solid. The tap will push seed out and not be able to burrow. Otherwise i bet it grows…

Welcome to the community!!

Lots of ways growers around here pop seeds.

You can’t really drown them in water. I leave mine in a solo cup in water in total darkness for 48 to 72 hours… long enough to pop and give me 1/8" tail. Then it goes into the final pot.

The paper towel method also works but you have to be careful in detangling to not damage the (intertwined) root which is connected with the paper towel. Some people plant the raw seed in the pot itself and just keep it very wet for a week.

You’ll be good either way. Make sure temperature is also not cold. I learned my lesson recently… 60F is too cold to me for germinating and sprouting seeds.

Thank you for the welcome! I have the paper towel in a case at the moment to keep it in the dark.

Thank you VA!
I honestly liked the water method. The first seed I tried with the paper towel method ended up molding. I think I’m going to stick to soaking them because it was nice and quick.

I soaked the pellet in warm water to make it not a rock. I have it in a clay pot with drainage so I can add water to it as needed.

I switched when saw the success rate. Last 13 beans all popped and took. I just squirt a touch of peroxide in also.

I don’t wait for a tail as soon as they crack the tap root is vulnerable I put it in soil right away. Sometimes I don’t catch it until there’s a tail and I’m more worried about damaging it than I would with a seed that’s just barely cracked.

Thats why I don’t want to put them in paper towels. I don’t want to take the chance of destroying the tap root.

I leave them in water/h2o2 for no more than 48 hours if they haven’t cracked they go in a paper towel and I check them twice a day until they do.

That makes sense. I’m checking seed number 2 after I send this.
