First Post, First Grow

Clone update!

Gave her a haircut. Her bottom leaves went dry and crispy, but the shoots at the joint seem to be growing still, so I think she may actually set roots. Still nothing on the outside of the net yet, though.

Take away:

All of the plants are still showing some signs of calcium deficiency. At the same time, they’re all starting to show the slightest bit of tip burn. I top dressed them last weekend, so, that leads me to believe that they’re rich on most other things, just low on calcium, and a little on Mg, with some of the purpling on the stalks I see. They’ve had about a week to soak in what Cal there was in the runoff from that top dress but, I think I’m going to add calcium in the next watering. Probably 2-4 days from now with stretch setting in, I assume. I figure if I’m deficient now with stretch setting in, I can probably even overdo it a little bit and be okay. I like to err on the less is more side, so I’ll probably add about the same that I added the first time I sprayed Cal in the water. Between both waterings, it’s probably about 1 eggshell worth of calcium, something like 36% of the weight of the eggshell is calcium, so whatever an eggshell weighs, lol. Remind me, and I’ll run the experiment sometime.

P.S. - I forgot the put the whole tent shot in the opening statement, so I’ve attached it here, along with the clone.

Prelude (TL;DR - I put the net on, lowered the light and cranked it up):

Yesterday, I was looking over my fine young ladies, and decided it was time to drop the SCROG net on 'em. LST isn’t going to level the canopy out any further, particularly while using fabric pots. Add, to this that I believe I’m at least a few days, if not a week into stretch and want the nodes to level out in the next 1-2 weeks for budding; this triggered another thought process, more on that later. I put the Kush Bush on a box to raise it to roughly the same height as the other plants, and lowered the net. I mooshed them all around and got what I could under the net. The main top on the Kush Bush is non-too pliable anymore and really doesn’t want to bend. I managed to snake it around under a corner in the net for the evening. Miss Wedding Cake’s main cola wasn’t quite long enough to tuck into the next square, so she ended up getting to stay up through the night. Back to the previous lead on being in stretch - I’ve noticed that they’re growing, but ever since they hit flower, they’ve actually slowed their growth. So, while pondering things after getting the SCROG on finally, I decided I’d abandon my hope to keep the light fixed at the top of the tent through the grow, as the plants just aren’t tall enough to get enough PPFD from the light, even at max power (500w), I think. So, I lowered the light to 24" off the canopy, and took it from 8-10 power setting (400->500w). So, I had the net set (accidentally, ironically) to almost exactly 24", and light height at 24". I measured from the light to the ceiling, about where the light had been previously, and realized it was 28"ish above where it is now!

I must’ve been starving them for light! Poor girls D:. From seed to late veg, they did GREAT under light from level 3->8. Then, they hit flower and just slowed down tremendously. I’ve heard stretch is when they want the highest PPFD of their life, but didn’t think about it 'til now. All of that led me to waking up to this:

While checking them out, I also noticed that the WWCBD was looking a little droopy, so I checked her soil. She was pretty dry (2 days after water, when they’d all been averaging like 4ish days between waterings, if not more)! So, I checked the other two. Miss Wedding Cake looked a little droopy, but Kushy looked pretty happy. Their soils returned appropriate results to their leaves’ looks. I landed on making a light feed for the morning and feeding them today.

I said all of that to say this: I watered 'em today, and it’s time for a water update!

watching along. I noticed that the CBD plants spring into flower quicker than other THC dominant palnts. Excited to see how yours turn out! Good luck :four_leaf_clover:

Water Update! TL;DR - I gave em 1.25gal of filtered tap water with ~.5 eggshells of calcium (yes, eggshells is a measurement in my house haha), 60ml organic coconut water, and a small drizzle of honey (~.5-1ml). I make the cal solution from eggshells, so that’s how I measure. Explanation below.

Girls were thirsty last night, so I decided to water them today. Kush the Bush got a little less than the other two, as she seemed to not be as in need. Split was probably something like 30%WWCBD/30%WC/25%KCBD/10%Foliar/5%WWCBDClone As, I mentioned in my last update, I added the second half of the first batch of cal solution to the feed, as well as about 60ml (4 Tbsp.) of organic coconut water.

I only added 60ml (the lowest of the feed ratings I found for it at ~15ml/l. I am using a 1gal sprayer, so I just went based on a gallon, but obviously used probably 5-6L) due to not wanting to overfeed the plants. They seem to be okay on most macros, just needing more calmag. However, coconut water has great amino acids, enzymes, etc., so I wanted to get those in. I also added 1 small drizzle of raw, unfiltered honey from a local farmer. Added warm water to the top of the sprayer, and shook it up.

As a rule of thumb, I always foliar spray my girls when I water them. They get most of their water in nature from the sky, and it’s good for them to get “rained” on, imo. So, that’s why I included a small percentage of the watering to foliar. Also, foliar spraying aminos and calcium shouldn’t harm them at all, and so far they’ve seemed to really love it. The, first time I foliar sprayed with the cal solution, they seemed to turn up at it a bit to begin with, which I attributed to the vinegar in the solution. I’m mixing up a new batch, since I’ve now used up the last of the old one. For the first batch, I put the dried, powdered eggshells into the glass, and added probably a half cup of RO water before adding some vinegar to the solution and letting it go. I then proceeded to add more vinegar until (several days) I got to the day that I needed to add it, and so I filtered it through a coffee filter, and added half to my sprayer. Realizing that I needed to not dilute the vinegar with water this round, and that I probably had only extracted a small portion of the available calcium from the eggshells I was using, I poured undiluted vinegar deep over what remained of the first batch of eggshells. Today, this batch looks like this:

What I take from doing this experiment is that the material in the green box is the leftover layer from eggshells that have been dissolved. The more white, chunky layer on the bottom is still rich with calcium to be extracted. Because it still has calcium, it must be more dense, and so sinks to the bottom. This leads me to having to do this, every once in a while:

This puts fresh vinegar in contact with fresh eggshells for dissolving. This has been going for weeks now, and it was 3 whole eggshells, and now we’re up to around 1/4-1/2 gallon of vinegar to dissolve it entirely. It takes forever! But, it does seem to work like a charm, these girls are really starting to darken up and lose their yellow leaf spots, and purple stalks.

This calcium addition is just to make sure we get out of the deficient range, and hopefully I can just go into maintenance mode and add a small amount to every watering as I go.

WHEW

Now, on to the plants…finally…

The White Widow CBD is first on deck!

She took her foliar well, and seemed to be pleased with the drink! I’ve been working on her incessantly, trying to get her to work up under the net and stay put. The general theme of today was SCROGging these ladies properly. I want to see if I can get these lower nodes to stretch up while I put the tops under the net through stretch. If, the bottoms come up to meet the tops over the next couple weeks, we’ll really be in business. Right now, she’s showing like 16 tops, I think I counted. In, the event that the bottoms do come up, we’re looking at 50+ tops, maybe even quite a bit more, depends on how much they stretch. I’m really excited, and also very scared that they may not stretch like I thought they would. Since, I got her top node under the net last night, I did notice that the lowers seemed to have moved ever so slightly up. I’ve taken to pulling lowers up, while bending a higher branch down, and resting the lower on it to give it a better chance at auxins. I’ve also got an old dabber blade that’s shaped like a samurai sword attached to a twist-tie that I bent into a hook to use as an LST device for smaller individual branches. It’s been helping, but I need like a dozen more haha. All-in-all, she’s doing as good as I could ask for a first run, and her top node is working with me on this whole SCROGging thing, so for that, I thank her. May she smoke well .

Do you plant on using molasses? Check out the nutrients on it, it is something to consider, I use it in all my grows.

Kushy the Bushy is upppp!

I love this plant, she’s gorgeous. But, given her height, she is very difficult to work with sometimes. Her main stalk is very difficult to bend any further, with the exception of the newest, most tender growth. It sketches me out to bend it far enough to tuck it under the net, as it stands. She’s going to have to grow a bit before I can tuck her and get the canopy 100% on-board. Her side branches, however, are a different story. They’re very easy to work with, aside from the newest, smallest ones that are nearest to the top node. This plant is my secret hope. If, my theories are correct, and she sends all of these side branch nodes north to the light, we’re in the money, honey. I stopped counting over 50 bud sites.

Anyway, she’s not showing any deficiencies, and she’s growing! Hoping this light adjustment really does something to their growth rates.

If I can find blackstrap all natural, for sure. My parents have some, and I meant to ask where they got it, but I’ll do that! I like all natural feeds. I’m about to figure out how to get my aloe processed for addition, I’ve heard it’s great for foliars and feeding! I’ll raise aloe in the same tent to farm for food lol.

I use Brer Rabbit blackstrap, I pick it up at the grocery store.
I have heard other folks here say they can’t find molasses, most are from southern states, I believe. I thought everyone had molasses. Maybe some parts of the US dont?

Last, but most certainly not least, my main lady, Miss Wedding Cake!

Back plant in this shot

Well, unfortunately, it seems I only took a couple pics of her. But, she’s hard to get pics of and I got side tracked while foliar spraying. But, I really like this side shot, if I don’t say. She’s really got legs on her, and if she keeps stretching for a couple weeks, we’re really gonna fill in this tent. I didn’t think these little skinny plants would fill it up, but they’re really getting there. She’s really really green, and still with that shade of yellow. So, she looks very light, until you spray her down. I think this feeding will really push her out of this battle with Ca, and hopefully propel some good stretching for the next couple weeks. Her top node is also pliable, but also not long enough to go under the next square of the net. I think I managed to get her stuffed up under a knot in the net, and put a fan leaf through it. Anyway, I’m really hoping I can get her back up to full health prior to setting buds. She’s my high THC strain until I pull down another run after this, so I wanna make the most of her.

Clone update:

She’s still getting leaves wilting, but no roots yet. Hoping a little refresh on water with some low-dose natural nutes will help stimulate root growth (coco water is supposed to help, we’ll see). She is sturdy in her peat pellet, though, so that makes me think she may yet throw some white hairs. If she does, I’m going to be very excited. I already have a pot made up for her, just needs a plant . I’ll keep an eye on her and let you know if anything happens!

Outro:

All-in-all they’re healthy and growing. I think they were very light deficient, being as they’re in stretch now. Dropping the light and pumping it up didn’t seem to go poorly over the first 24 hours, so we’ll keep an eye on it and see. I assume that’s why I only needed to water every 4ish days, and not every day or two, which is what I’ve seen for a 5 gal fabric pot and a stretching plant. I ended up screwing with the net A BUNCH, to make it work for everyone, as I had a slight snafoo during watering. Water came out of the pot/I’m reckless with a spray nozzle and the box that I had Kushy on was getting wet and began to deflect. I decided I needed something sturdier… all I could find was a canner. So, I flipped it over and put Kushy up top. The pot is pretty significantly taller than the box was, so I had to raise the net in order to not completely destroy the plant. This is what it looked like after I was done messing around today lol:

So, this is an evolving situation, and I’ll keep you abreast of any major changes. So, far the plants are way better than I expected on LST/SCROGging. Kushy specifically. Her side branches have given me hope that she’s gonna fill up that corner pretty well, actually.

Conditions right after I closed up the tent after watering:

Channel 1 is my light
Channel 2 is the exhaust fan
Channels 3 and 4 are the circulating fans

I’m working on getting the daisy chains and such for these so I can operate more stuff. I got the little UV bars to put on the light, but forgot a daisy chain cable to plug them in the same port as my big light. It would also allow me to run both fans on the same channel. For some reason, they’re always commanded to different values but all of their parameters are the same in the controller. Beats me, I’ve looked through everything.

That’s all I’ve got, and the wife aggro is growing by the moment. Peace out everyone, happy growing!

I would assume you can get it anywhere, but it’s kind of a relic of the past in most places. No one really uses molasses anymore for cooking, so I assume just no one really knows about it haha.

Yes, she’s a WWCBD clone. And I forgot to give her water today! Gotta remember that in the morning. I haven’t ever heard of using that one. What’s good in it?
