Fire safety in the grow room

A smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher are two things rarely mentioned. A great addition to a room full of tents, hot lights, wires (overloaded?) space heaters. You get it? I don’t want to sound like a meannie, so get them. Today.

I keep a fire extinguisher close by and run fans across my power supplies. I agree. Grow rooms use a lot of power and can overload household systems if you have a big grow.

@Gooch99 I’ve seen some hairy adapter to adapter to adapter connections on here and you are absolutely right, we should all have extinguishers close by.

A chemical fire extinguisher is best. Don’t put water on an electrical fire. I got to thinking about this topic when I moved the space heater today. The extension cord that I had it plugged into was very warm. It was hot at the connection. I have the heater plugged into the wall outlet directly now. The plug is not hot at all now.

Did you hear he had a fire in the grow room? He said the flames were in tents.

I worry about this for sure now that I have to run a space heater. I dont run it inside the tent just for this reason. probably less effective but I just feel having it in the tent is higher risk. maybe if my wife didnt keep the house so damn cold. I do appreciate her thermostat skill come electric bill time though

I have a power strip with a built-in circuit breaker in each tent hanging in a corner with an extension cord running out the porthole to the wall outlet. I’m not crazy about it because what if it trips when I’m not home? It could screw up the grow. Then again, my house won’t burn down while I’m gone. Circuit breakers usually trip for a good reason.
Don’t overload the power strip with a bunch of cheap clip-on fans. One good quality fan for circulation is better. Also buy a good quality timer that can handle 1000 watts or more. Use thick gauge extension cords as and use the shortest one possible. Check electrical connections to see if they are hot. Usually where the power strip is plugged into the extension cord. Make sure it is not resting on the tent. Did I miss anything?

I also keep all my equipment on a circuit bar. I mostly did it for plug availability but, it does serve as an extra layer of protection. I have a good buddy who get his house burnt down with a cheap chinese heatlamp he was using to help keep his dogs warm while they was in their outdoor area. You are correct that quality of equipment can become a safety factor.

I wish a cannabis you tube creator would make a fire safety video. Mabey an interview a fire marshal. Set a tent on fire with a space heater. Like they do with the Christmas tree demo. Every grow tent usually comes with a patch. I wonder how fast it burns. I’ll do that experiment outside when it’s not raining.

Paranoia will destroy you…or at least your buzz lol

thats true also. Anxiety has been a real pain in my rump throughout my life. I can easily imagine worst case scenarios in just about everything. sometimes its paid off, but many times it just causes me undue stress. I could easily see some practices becoming a hazard in an indoor grow setup. If its electric I keep it off the floor. If its hot I keep it away from flamable surfaces. If its green I water it.
