Experiences w/LED lights that include UVA & NIR LEDs?

While researching the lights to use in my tent (I’m a newbie, starting from scratch), I noticed that the latest development in LED grow-lights is to add UVA and NIR LEDs to “full spectrum” lights that use 2 or more types of LEDs to cover the visible spectrum. Most allow the user to select the output spectrum as follows:

  1. Full spectrum white
  2. Full spectrum white + NIR
  3. Full spectrum white + NIR + UVA

Has anyone here tried one of these latest-generation LED lights? How do your results compare with full-spectrum LEDs, or other types?

Given the flood of responses, I decided to be a pioneer and try this type of lighting. I’ve nothing to compare against, though, so I won’t know what results I’d get with alternatives.

I suppose the experienced growers here have lighting already, are happy with it, and rarely have reason to replace it. So it may be awhile before we have people who can say how their results with these new LED lights compare with what they used before.

What kind of lighting did you get?

A UV light bar has been a great supplement to our LED Rspec . As you may already know, Used during flower it inflicts micro damages thus causing the plant to repair itself… This equates to frost on mine. It’s dangerous to your skin and eyes… if you get one just remember to turn off UV BEFORE UNZIPPING tent…

Everyone here is crazy for hlg lighting. But the big thing seems to be which diodes it uses. Samsung 301 seem to be what the better grow lights use. Sorry no one saw this. I’m pretty new too. These guys here are great. But these questions get asked daily.

I like my Black Dog LED lights…I have two of them. They are expensive, but I buy into their spectrum. They use 9 colors of LED from 5 different manufacturers…Including UV and IR.

What type of uv are you using? Uva, uvb? Combo?
I bought some uva 24” bars from spider farmer. And really have been nervous to try it so close to the end. And im finding info hard to come by.
What do you use, and how many hours per day? And at what stage do you start?
I assume you may have tried one without and one with? What did you notice.
I accidentally got my first one really frosty, but the second one of same strain, not so much. This one is somewhere in between.

The lights i have ( vivosun a100) have a few uv chips in there.

Here is a quick search from our community…

Maybe you can find some useful info :green_heart::metal:t2:

HLG600Rspec with Hlg30 UVA bar mounted.
For me: Uva stays off during veg, then on with flower cycle of 12/12.
Other than frost, I’ve also noticed no bugs, or mold.
There’s proven data on skin damage to the BIG C… So have and external switch

I chose the Vivosun AW200 Wings. They’re the same as the A100, but add two adjustable hinged wings on either side that double the power to 200 W. I’ll say more about them at the end of my post.

Both models use 5 different LEDs to cover the visible spectrum, plus UVA and NIR LEDs. So they’re “full spectrum” models (which used to be the latest thing), supplemented with UVA and NIR and offer your choice of three spectra, as described in my original post.

I should have realized that experienced growers are more apt to add UVA/NIR lights than replace their main units. I spaced on the existence of supplemental lights for this user group.

What benefits have you noticed since adding the UV light bar?

Thanks. I wish I’d thought to search for threads about supplemental lights before posting. On the other hand, I’m interested specifically in the latest generation of LED lights that include UVA and NIR and wonder what results others have noticed with them. Maybe some models don’t provide enough to make a difference. Maybe there are some that provide too much.

The threads @StonedCold13 pointed us to contain discussions about adding UVA and even UVB supplemental lights, and some about NIR. Several posts report that adding UV increased the amount of resin, trichomes, and/or terpenes. Those results confirm that the underlying science works.

What’s “frost?” I don’t know this term.

Black Dog is an example of the new type of LED light I’m asking about. They’re unique in that they don’t provide a way to switch the UVA and NIR LEDs off. Their website makes a case for keeping them on throughout a grow.

Have you been able to compare your results against a different light?

As for the AW200: It measures 13" x 26" when the wings are parallel with the central LED board. Like the A100, the central board has a fan at its center that blows down to provide circulation:

I tilt the wings down to reduce the length to 24", for reasons I’ll explain momentarily. Here’s the footprint I measured at a 24" hanging height, using a PhotoBio LGBQM2 PAR meter:

Here’s a graph showing PPFD at the hotspot at different light settings:

Here’s my reason for wanting a 24" length for my 2’ x 4’ tent:

Footprint and PPFD graph for all 3:

I was lucky enough to buy them during the recent Amazon Prime days.

Frost… the glistening , stacked, and caked on cosmic diamond dust.
Take a look at the “Bud of the Month” thread and you’ll see and read thousands of comments on how Frosty the buds are.
May you have Good growing with your new light!

I have not. I got back in the game after 35 years three years ago. I got one of their second generation lights then and the latest last year…so I can only compare to other local growers. I am really happy with the quality I get.

So, is frost the trichomes, which are white initially, the terpenes they produce, or both?

I should have mentioned that most of Kind’s lights (distributed in the US by Gorilla) include adjustable UVA and NIR LEDs.

Vivosun and Black Dog have been mentioned already. Are there others?

Trichomes are the clear mushroom shaped growths that form on the buds and sugar leaves. The more, or bigger the frostier. Its the good stuff!

So, “frost” refers solely to the visible terpenes. Thanks for clarifying, @Rockdog62.

Is there a good “dictionary” to consult for cannabis-related jargon I can’t interpret from the context?
