Drat The Gnats Are Back!

Was having great weather, so moved a few pots onto deck to enjoy sunshine. The downside is all the gnats enjoyed it too. I have hanging fly strips in both my tents resolved gnat problems earlier this year. But now with plenty of eggs laid, there are millions.

Used diatomaceous earth which worked for ants in house, but found out only good when dry. Tried a layer of play sand, worked but interfered with water absorption. Increased fly strips which worked, just seeing way too many.

Since most of the gnats were in pots, thought a flypaper on stick would work great. And amazon had the solution.
(only comes with 2 holders)

I took a couple full sheets and stuck then on side of tent at pot level. Took picture a couple mins later after install.


*Not my product, just a great idea. Not like fly strip glue that gets all over.

Try insect frass (black soldier fly)

They lay there eggs the soil so the larvae can develop consuming the organic matter.
Layer 1 inch(2.5cm) of washed sand or DE(Diatomaceous earth) in each pot. Also you can use Capt Jacks Neem Oil up to a couple weeks before harvest.

Also I’ve been using a bug zapper for the past three years in my tent. No more bugs.
I’ve got one with LED UV lights that are also beneficial to plants.

Do you keep it on right through the dark period? I had a large one in my grow room but eventually moved it into my kitchen for flies and mosquitoes lol.Been considering getting another one going but set the timer to only be on for 13 hours, 30min into dark and 30min before lights on ?

I start it 15 minutes before lights on and shuts off 15 minutes after lights out. I also have deep Red lights that also run on the same timer. The bugs are drawn to the UV frequency.

Practical Tips

  • Light Schedule: Maintain a consistent light schedule to avoid stressing the plants. Typically, a 12/12 light cycle (12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness) is used during the flowering stage.
  • Light Intensity: Ensure the intensity of red and far-red light is appropriate for the stage of growth. Too much light can cause stress, while too little can be ineffective.

By using red LEDs strategically, you can optimize the growth and flowering cycles of your cannabis plants, leading to healthier plants and potentially higher yields.

Mosquito bits It kills gnat larvae in the soil. Use yellow sticky traps to kill the adults.

My Far Red LED are built into the lights, only have a seperate switch ( on the lights for veg / flower ) so can’t really seperate them from the white leds with a timer. So when in flower they get 720Nm for 12 hours straight. I’ve always wanted to mimic sunrise and sunset but I’m quite happy with my results with my current set up. ( but you never know lol )

Yep, lots of manufacturers are including the IR, Red and UV in there horticulture lighting.

Some even have switches onto (like yours) the fixture. A few have external switches to manipulate the colors.


Mine have the far red and IR but no UV. So I have been adding those to my flower tent and using them to manipulate the lighting a bit.

Thanks for the idea, but considering my last electric bill was $380.00, I would rather a solution that doesn’t require juice.

And when are you running your lights? I just run my crops at night and from early fall to spring.
So I’m actually saving by warming up my house a bit during winter.

I have a small 24 hour light tent and a large 12 hour light tent. I continue to use multi bulb CFL fixtures (old habits hard to break) Along with the LED fixtures. I run big tent lights at night.

I swear I could run a gas generator in the yard and would be cheaper than what these thieves charge for electric. Can’t wait for 0 point!!

I know what you mean. I’ve been seriously talking to solar panel companies the last 2 years. My contract for .12 per kWh including taxes and fees expires 8/25. I’m shooting for 1st quarter next year. Gotta check with your state and local power authorities for rebates available. Texas will pay for batteries and pay you to share your over produced up to a certain amount.
I am just validating the companies that are certified for this rebate.

I get worried about adding “stuff” to soil. So I did a 1/2 cup mosquito bits with 2 gallons of water. Let it sit over night for a nice cocktail. In morning adjusted ph, filtered and watered plants. Everything worked great! When I water I would see a thousand bugs running away from water. 2 waterings and I see nothing moving.

So this would be man 2, bugs 0. Not one drop of electricity was harmed in the making of this experiment. but if you attempt to flap your wings in my tent, your days are numbered!
