Hi all. Summers in downstate NY can be hot and dry, or cool and wet like the summer of 2018(ended up with bud rot on my purple haze) . Obviously can’t predict at this point, so there are a few strains I’m thinking of and was hoping to get opinions or advise from other growers in the downstate NY area.
Northern lights, Blue Cheese, AK-47, Hollands Hope and Guerrilla’s Gusto
Thoughts, opinions or other strain ideas are greatly appreciated.
I live in Massachusetts and have somewhat similar weather. I got bud rot on a few plants outdoors last year with the nighttime temp drops and muggy nights in late August and September. I was thinking of starting a few autos early in the season to harvest in early August to avoid the bud rot that seems to showed up in September as summer came to an end.
Maybe try starting a mother plant indoors on 18/6 and clone it. June 1st put out clones and harvest in 2-3 months.
I’m growing ILGM Northern Lights and Afghani outside now. The NL is a beast, very impressed with the genetics and the published flower times are short.
Also growing some white widow autos, but it’s too soon to tell.
When are you planning on starting your Autos? When are your nights in the 40’s?
Autos only take about 90-100 days so like you, I started early due to bud rot last year. I plan to have all my WWA done and harvested by July, after that, the humidity is unbearable. I’m hoping my Fem LSD girl will be able to tolerate the humidity.
I was thinking of dropping around 5/1 and starting indoors, and transitioning outdoors in mid-May, probably bringing them in for the night until early June. The goal would be to harvest first week of August.
The nights don’t get into the 40’s until October. It’s the late august/early September nights that drop into the 60’s but still have a lot of humidity that killed me last year. It was a damp summer too.
@astony
Being from the same general area your from Your biggest issue outdooors will be high humidity in the fall especially the last few seasons we’ve had humidity in the 80% range as late as October for extended periods
Not to discourage you just a heads up
Otherwise you choices seem good
Gorilla glue does well in our area I’ve grown them outdoors a few times
I now grow mostly indoors now but still like to throw one or two outdoors lol
You going to start them indoors and move out ?
Do you grow out in the open you’ll always loose a little to bud rot outdoors pruning plant so air movement threw canopy is a good idea to dense a canopy and mold or mildew can start
@Willd uses a few products to control these issue
Maybe he can post a link or two for you
Oh GOOD! I have gorilla glue!
I’m in Mass and last year I went crazy moving my plants into the shed every time the monsoon thunderstorms hit! They hate LIGHTning when they’re sleeping, I had reverts one year from constant lightning every night! Last year was the worst for rain, lightning and humidity I’ve seen in a long long time!
I have moss growing in places I’ve never seen before!
Lets hope for cool dry weather this year!
@Countryboyjvd1971 mentioned my bud rot prevention/treatment.
I use a product called ZeroTol, airflow is also crucial.
I’ve never had an outdoor grow where botrytis was not present to some degree on at least some plants. Last year was the first using ZeroTol and it greatly reduced it. I was advised that I can up the strength a little to try to improve my results.
I spray it on my raspberry patch as well since it’s the most likely source being spread by insects
Last season I had Bubblegum, Purple haze, WWa, and Granddaddy purple. Purple haze and White Widow all had bud rot issues. Bubblegum seemed to do well against it. GDP was out during weeks of heavy fall rains and had zero bud rot issues.
I have the blue mix pack on the way. Blue Cheese will be my outdoor photo this year. ILGM says they are resistant to molds.
Thanks for your feedback. Probably going with Blue Cheese and Northern lights. I’m going to start my seeds outdoors, to avoid the hardening process. Worked last year, so I’ll do it again.
Hopefully we wont have fall monsoons like last year!
How was your Purple Haze before the rot? I was very impressed with mine, but like you they got bud rot during the flowering stage. The cool and WET fall definitely put a damper on things, though I was still able to get 10 oz from my plant
