A little over 50 plants grown outside over 5 years and every single one got some amount of bud rot. This year was going to be different, a very dry hot late spring and summer. Even so I sprayed Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain D747, Reynoutria sachalinensis, and Bacillus subtilis strain QST 713. Figured I’d let the different bacteria fight it out to see who would colonize the most. Today I was inspecting my durban poison and one of the very top colas had bud rot. It is out in the open and in the sun, but we have had a couple of weeks of rain and cold (40s-50s) nights. This is what has happened every year towards the end of September beginning October. There was no insect or worm damage that I could see as I went thru the cut off cola. I’ve had that before were aphids or worms seem to have instigated the bud rot, but that is a complete guess on my part.
Is this just the way it is around here? New Hamphsire Massachusetts border area?
Thanks
I grow in Chautauqua & Cattaraugus counties, in the southwestern corner of New York State. We get rain galore. So much so that I pulled all 20 of mine over the last week or so. Luckily, I got a huge head start indoors, so most were ready. We did a half dozen durbans ourselves. 4 were close enough, the other 2 had to come down early. We had some mold in our crowns as well. I have 4 durbans started very early indoors that were lollipopped, like everything else we grow, that I gave to a buddy/hunting partner. His all finished together and had beautiful crowns with no mold. We’ve come to the conclusion that, in our area, these are the best locations: a south facing spot/slope that gets sun all day, a spot that is well manicured/landscaped/mowed so that there’s no goldenrod, prickers, or other waist-height shrubbery that traps and holds moisture, and (the always underestimated) high elevation. Lots of folks worry about the plants having enough to drink, and rightly so, but in the Appalachians and the Alleghanys, or in the Green Mountains, anywhere you have terrain that isn’t flat and rolling, your gonna have your overnight moisture like fog and dew, that settles into the hollers on those damp nights, especially at this time of the year. The higher your elevation, the far more likelier you are to be above where the dew point forms those fog clouds.
One of my durbans that developed a touch of mold. I cut it out, then covered up the gap with the black hose nozzle for size (upper left).
Beautiful area. I grew up north of Buffalo and we would go fishing in your area and the finger lakes.
I’m at about 200’ elevation, no fields near me, just lawns. My durban is on a 3’ stand, pot is over a 1’ deep, so the top of the plant is over 11’ above the ground. Very sunny location too.
We had great luck this year with our white widows. Always from ilgm, I should say. But this year I started much earlier than I normally do. When we went out in the middle of May, they had already been in veg since March 1. They were all almost 4’ tall when they went out, and many were showing preflowers. We’re gonna start going with earlier finishers outside and run the longer finishers indoors.
I’d defoliate the snot out of those for airflow.
Hi there. I am in your neck of the woods on lake erie. I grow inside. 3 tents.
The pic where you can see that they’re on blue and white plastic is from almost a month ago, right before we started defoliating. We cut everything down. Days upon days of heavy rain and overnights in the 40s left us no choice. We’ve received an inch of rain alone today and are forecasted for another inch over the next 36 hours. If I was still out right now I’d be crying while I was cutting.
Nice. So you know how difficult the weather is in this area. I’m currently inside too, in 1 tent, with 4 super lemons from ilgm, that I’m about to flip.
I thought it was a microphone and you were interviewing it or doing a video
GO BILLS!
Grew up south of Buffalo in Ea, live in Northern Ny now. Found this thread hoping to find the answers to the same problems. We’ve had similar weather and I’m just waiting to find the first bud rot on my outdoor photos.
Thought i was clever and ran 2 autos along with 2 photos outside this year, thinking the Autos might finish before the fall weather came. First plant, bruce banner auto finished with no rot and beautiful buds. The second, grandaddy purple had a triple whammy, bud rot, insect infestation and went hermie on me.
I to am from NY.just east of you in Steuben county.I know the woes of outdoor growing there. After moving to SC , I found the same issues.
Guess the dreaded rot/mold is everywhere.Going to try the indoor thing very soon.
my boom mic.
What’s “ea?” I’m thinking of trying my hand at some autos myself next year. I’ve read in this forum, and others, that the buds on autos don’t wanna fatten up. They stay airy and loose, like long-seasonal sativas. I’m thinking about starting my photos for outside around the middle of February, and maybe popping some autos around the end of April or by 5/1. The autos should finish up before the cold and damp sets in. I ran a ton of ilgm gdp this year and I was surprised how airy the flowers stayed. I’ve spent the last week trimming larf, and I can’t express how much I love that . Sorry to hear about your issues. There’s nothing worse than the rot. The bugs can be mitigated, but there’s not much can be done for the rot. Obviously nothing can he done for the hermie.
Nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills! I sat through the heartbreak of 4 consecutive super bowl losses. Just want 1 super bowl win before I tip over!
Get yourself a tent and a decent LED light, like I did. I haven’t grown indoors, before picking it back up in the last year, in 20 years. But it’s all coming back to me now like Celine Dion. Hey do you still have any connections in Steuben? That’s big buck central out there, and as you can tell from my profile picture…
“Just want 1 super bowl win before I tip over!”
Same here.
Whenever a snowstorm or rain would hit on the day of a game, my dad was able to pick up tickets cheap. Usually nose bleed seats, but I was able to see games at War Memorial Stadium in the 60s and Rich Stadium in the 70s.
We were visiting relatives south of Pittsburgh in 1975 when my uncle asked if I wanted to see the Bills play the Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium. I was already jumping up and down as he was trying to explain that I was going to be alone and way up behind one of the end zones. I didn’t care. I was enjoying the game, the Bills had the ball at the other end, Reggie pulls, the hand off to Simpson, he goes off tackle, and is soon running down the sidelines for a touchdown. I’m jumping up and down screaming “GO GO…” when I realize there is nobody else screaming. I look down at the crowd, everyone had turned to stare at me. All I could think was I’m going to die. The look that the grandma’s gave me hinted that their knitting needles in their purses were soon to be sticking out of me. I was a scrawny teenager and realized that I didn’t want to die yet. Waited for the Steelers to get the ball and the crowd to forget about me, got up from my seat, and tracked down my uncle behind the Steelers bench. I explained what happened, he called me a dumb … and told me to sit down on the steps. Within a minute an usher approached me and said “Kid you can’t sit there.” My uncle told him what happened. The usher looked at me, shook his head and told me “Legally you can’t sit there, morally I can’t send you back to your death. Just squish way over to the side and keep out of everyone’s way”. That was the best seat I ever had for a game.
I love it! Classic tale and you learned a good lesson without paying for it dearly. Gotta say, steelers fans are a pita. They’re the yankees fans of football. And I’m a lifelong yankees fan!
That aside, a dozen guys and myself had season tickets for years at the Ralph. In the days before people jumped through tables. I’ve seen debauchery and mayhem on countless occasions. Some of my favorites are as follows (in no particularorder): stadium bjs/stadium banging, guys chugging beer that’s been poured down the anal crevice of a good looking girl, snorting lines so long they ran from one side of the trunk to the other, guys being too wasted that pass out in their seats then wake up to vomit on small children/families, and entire charcoal grills coming flying outta the back of trucks on the 90. But man there’s some Sunday mornings that I really miss getting up early and starting my drinking and smoking at 8 am. That was about the only time it was socially acceptable. Nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody, tailgaters like bills fans do!!!
East aurora, about 15 min from the ralph. Agreed just gimme one…
I ran 2 autos indoors last year to great success, but yes buds were very loose, but still good smoke. I was thinking Idid something wrong, but after reading up I do agree its part of the auto genetics. I started my outdoor autos around that time, end of april and they did finish up before the crappy weather came in. I wasn’t going to do any photos outdoors this year, but I couldn’t resist having a 15’ monster in the garden. I also played around with some cloning, and got one OG kush from my indoor. She has been resistant to mold so far, but my runtz is starting to show some signs. Hoping the reminants of Ian stay far away from the NE and we can get some dry weather to finish out.
Still have family there,friends,etc.
I used to hunt archery .been all over the planet chasing different critters.since moving to SC my heart just isn’t in it anymore.I have a close friend in Montana whose been hounding me to come out and hunt but as I said just not into it.closing in on 65 yrs old .
