Dehumidifiers for dry tents

I was wondering if using a dehumidifier in a drying room or tent could affect the buds flavor. Apparently, they can produce odors for various reasons from being new to being dirty. Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks everyone

Whatever it takes to maintain a RH of ~60%. Dehumidifers put out a lot of heat, so be sure to keep your eye on temps. I use a dehumidifier in the Summer when ambient RH is high.

I use one when needed mostly during drying if humidity is high but I have used it during flower for the same reason, put it right in the tent

@MidwestGuy @Retiredoldguy Thanks, so no issues with odors? Where I’m at right now it’s been raining and damp most of the spring. Until temperatures warrant the air conditioning, the humidity gets high. Its always a little higher in grow room (which is where I dry too). Right now it’s been hovering between 65 and 80%. Right now it’s raining  and of course, i need to dry my weed!

I never got an odor from my dehumidifier…

I’ve never heard anyone raise an issue about odors.

@Retiredoldguy @MidwestGuy Awesome!! Im tacking together a drying box (a 1x2" frame with cardboard or plastic covering it) like 2x4x5 and want to use a small humidifier with control inside

ok now I see what you were asking… unless you have some kind of carbon filter and exhaust fan on that drying box…you will have an odor

My comment was regarding odors specifically from a dehumidifer. If you are concerned about general cannabis odor issues, I agree with @Retiredoldguy about carbon filters.

Weed, when drying, smells more like hay than cannabis. My drying room vents directly outdoors and it has never been a concern.

I’ve dried quite a bit of weed, mostly outdoor weed, but really want to try and get it right and improve flavor etc. now that im indoors.

That should read dehumidifier in my comment

Thanks

A slow dry and proper cure are critical for smell and taste.

Well, it comes with filters… probably not carbon. Ill probably try to dehumidify the room and just use an exhaust fan on the box i guess. Hopefully it quits raining and dries up around here. Usually rh is too low when im trying to dry… it’s just really damp right now:man_shrugging::sunglasses::v:

Im trying

When yall are talking about drying, am I to understand this is post-harvesting? In other words, when the bud is full, is it cut then dried in a special device or are yall talking about pulling water from the entire plant and drying it on the stem?

Sorry if this seems silly, I’m new with all of this.

Yes, this is post harvest.

Alot of ideas of how to get cured bud properly, but the key is drying it in the dark, mostly, as slow as possible without molding. Usually 1-2 months. A good rule of thumb is 60%rh 60°f (60/60). Leaving it on the stalk or whole plant will help slow the drying process.

Personally, i usually don’t cut everything at once. I usually take in 2 or 3 harvests letting the lower buds fatten up and see a little more light before chopping and then im drying branches. So i hang branches in a smaller space to avoid drying too fast. I use a cardboard box. Just use a hydrometer and open or close box lids to try and keep around 60%. Be sure to have a little air flow. Others use humidifiers and dehumidifiers.

Then after hanging, take buds off stalks and put them in jars or grove bags.

Hang dry until 15% moisture

Cure from 15% to 10-12% (10-12% is perfect for smoking)

Get a cheap moisture meter used for checking wood moisture. $15 bucks at home depo. It will teach you what different % moistures feel like. Then you won’t need the meter. Definitely a $15 lesson worth learning

I’m on an outdoor grow, first one in 40 years lol is cutting my top main buds recommended when trichomes are right and this allows my bottom buds to get bigger ?

I dont know. Im doing that right now, but if trichomes are good i doubt the bottom buds will fatten up much. The plant would be pretty well matured at that time and exhausted all energy.
