Custom grow room

Looking to build my own small grow room. I’m not even sure I’d call it a room really, it’s gonna be more like a walk in closet. But my basement is pretty roomy and I wanted to frame out a custom grow space in it, just looking for some inspiration! Bonus points for RDWC setups.

I moved and lost my grow room several years ago and any pictures I had of it have been lost with multiple phone upgrades. I will share best advice I have though. Come up with a plan and budget then prepare to spend more and share your plan to be criticized. None of us have all of the answers but most of us have struck out and/or learned the hard way on plenty of occasions. At the very least you will get a few tips on what not to do.

Sounds like a grand adventure!

Is it a finished or encapsulated basement? Be careful of the moisture a basement comes with.

CMU block or poured walls will let water vapor pass straight through.

Mold and mildew spores could be an issue.

I already grow down there now, it’s not finished but I don’t have a huge moisture problem. The walls get just a touch damp when it rains but my grows have never been affected down there.

I’m pretty confident in the actual build itself, I’ve built lots of other stuff before. I think where I need the most advice is the design piece of it. I was thinking about maybe notching in some little shelves for a heater, built in storage on the outside wall for nutes and any other tools I use, etc but I thought I get some other ideas here from others who have done it

Take into consideration your lights and fans as well. The weight and adjustability. Being able to move them around as needed.

Ive built 3 rooms. All i did was decide how big i wanted each room and frames it out. If youre in a basement, i would recommend a vapor barrier. Invest in a dehumidifier. I have 3 dehumidifiers, 3 humidifiers, 3 heaters, and 1 big AC that i use to cool all 3 rooms in the summer.

if your going to build your room use poly pro insulation it has reflective coating on one side and it’s cheap

We had a home built a few years ago and ours has a generous utility room/storage. I built a 4 X 8’ “room” out of 2 X4’s and 1" Styrofoam. Made double doors for fantastic access and hung everything from the frame. It has a 9 1/2’ roof too which is nice to maintain temps. I’m on concrete so no worries about spills and there is ample room to place reservoirs outside of the grow space. I have a table to get everything at a nice working height.

This was the space:

Complete with doors closed:

It grows good plants:

I just completed building a 22’x8’ stick built inside my 30’50’ metal shop. Back wall is 4’x8’ veg room, then 4’x8’ lung room, 8’x8’ bloom room and a 6’x8’ trim, drying, storage room. I’m putting both 60 gallon res’s in the lung room, and wish I had made it 2 or 3 feet wider. With both res’s in there not much room to get past them. I have 10’ ceilings, so lots of room for taller plants. Outside the door to the lung room I have a very heavy duty rack to hold my nutes, spare parts etc.
I guess my biggest advice would be dont go too small, I thought I would have plenty of room, but it fills up fast.
I went with 2x6’s with R-19 in the walls and R-30 in the ceiling., floor is cement.
