Coco coir (coconut husk fibre) has become one of the most popular growing mediums for cannabis, and for good reason. Here’s what to know before you start.
What is coco coir?
A natural fibre byproduct of coconut processing. It’s inert (like hydroponics) but behaves similarly to soil, making it a great middle ground. You get faster growth than soil, more control over nutrients, and excellent drainage.
Why growers love it
- Faster vegetative growth than most soil grows
- Better oxygen to the root zone (especially in fabric/geo pots)
- More frequent watering = more feeding opportunities
- pH buffering is more forgiving than pure hydro
Key things coco growers must know
- Cal-Mag is non-negotiable. Coco binds calcium and magnesium. You must supplement these regardless of your nutrient line.
- pH range: 5.5–6.2. Lower than soil (6.0–7.0). Check and adjust every feed.
- Water to runoff. Coco should never dry out completely between waterings. Aim for 10–20% runoff each time.
- Fabric/geo pots are ideal. Air pruning + coco = explosive root structure.
Coco + geo pots setup (common beginner combo)
Start with a 1-gallon geo pot for seedling/early veg, transplant to 3–5 gallon for the rest of the grow. Use a 50/50 coco/perlite mix for even better drainage and airflow.
Common mistakes
- Skipping Cal-Mag early (most common reason for deficiencies in coco)
- Letting it dry out fully between waterings
- pH creeping too high (above 6.5 - starts locking out iron and manganese)
