They say keeping calcium levels high helps the plant defend itself from the rot, though rain and worms can do their damage.
I grow exclusively outdoors, and carefully cut the branch off if I see any signs of bud rot, bag it up, and throw it away. When i inspect during harvest/wash/cure process I toss whatever looks suspicious.
