Well in to my first (outdoor) flower - buds looking GREAT - had a neighbor take a look with me and… he found a smal spot of bud rot - roughly half the size of a golf ball. We’ve had a real wet summer and I’m a rookie - planted in a great spot, but probably didn’t defoliate enough. Live and learn…
I excised the obviously infected area, as well as small amounts of normal looking bud around it. My guy thinks I should defoliate pretty much everything at this point and watch… closely. I’m leaning towards just harvesting. He thinks I’ve got up to 8 oz, which would be a minor miracle, in my eyes.
Bud wash on a plant that has experienced bud rot? Part of me thinks the idea of killing spores makes totaly sense, but… What about the disadvantage of introducing a bunch of water to a plant that may already have issues? We’re in a nice dry spell now and, if I defoliate and open things up, I may stem the tide. Could I make the rot problem worse (keeping in mind I would remove all obviously infected areas)? Anyone have any experience with bud rot vs bud rot?
Am I right in feeling that opinions in bud washes are pretty divided? Seems like some folks are very strong proponents - I’ve also talked to some LONG TERM growers who have never heard of it.
Yes, it’s time to defoliate and kill the rot on your plant.
I’d use some hydrogen peroxide and spray the entire plant. Also you should drench the soil as the rot does stem from the root zone.
Try using a beneficial microbe to amend your soil in the future.
Hydrogen peroxide is a versatile and powerful tool that can be used to help your cannabis plants stay healthy and thrive. It can be used to control pests like spider mites, fungus gnats, and aphids by breaking down the exoskeletons of insects and killing them. It can also help prevent diseases such as powdery mildew, root rot, and mold by killing pathogens and promoting a healthy root zone. Hydrogen peroxide can provide extra oxygen to the plant roots, enhancing their ability to absorb nutrients and promoting overall plant health ¹⁴.
To use hydrogen peroxide to wash cannabis plants, you can follow these steps:
Choose the right concentration: Hydrogen peroxide is typically available in concentrations ranging from 3% to 35%. For cannabis plants, you’ll want to use a 3% concentration. If you have a higher concentration, you can dilute it with water to achieve the desired 3% solution ⁴.
Mix the solution: To create the hydrogen peroxide solution for your cannabis plants, mix 1 cup (8 oz) of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 gallon (128 oz) of water. This will give you a 0.2% hydrogen peroxide solution, which is safe for your plants ⁵.
Apply the solution: Depending on the issue you’re dealing with, there are different methods to apply hydrogen peroxide to your cannabis plants:
Foliar spray: To treat pests or diseases affecting the leaves, you can use a spray bottle to mist the hydrogen peroxide solution onto the affected areas. Make sure to spray the undersides of the leaves, as pests often hide there. Apply the solution early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid burning the leaves in direct sunlight ⁴.
Soil drench: To treat root-related issues or to provide extra oxygen to the root zone, you can water your plants with the hydrogen peroxide solution. Make sure to thoroughly saturate the soil so that the solution reaches the roots ⁴.
After applying hydrogen peroxide to your cannabis plants, monitor their progress closely ⁴. Please note that this is not a scientifically accurate measurement and it’s always best to consult with a professional before trying anything new.
