BHO extraction thread

@Covertgrower it was all flower, can i ask what made you think it had some trim in it?

You say that your suspicion is that the hot plate is set too high, but I have ran several times without even using the hot plate and I still get the same result.

Above in your previous post, you state that you like use marble-sized to large pea sized pieces. Maybe this is where im going wrong because i grind it up in a coffee grinder very small NOT a dust consistency though.

Next when loading the cylinder I put a little bit in and I Pat it down with a 1-in oak rod. I don’t pack it. I just pad it. Let the weight of the rod pushed it down. I also blow through it just to make sure the tane will go through easy but some resistance.

Thanks!!!

This is also part of it… you’re seeing broken down chlorophyll into your extract when it’s that small. This is definitely why it’s a much darker extract.
If you want to use a grinder you can do a couple spins in a food processor, larger blade and slower RPMS. I’ve done it that way with decent results, but still prefer breaking it up by hand. I prefer the results that way.

The darker color is what tipped me off. It looks like a trim run, trim usually has a lot of amber in it, and comes out darker than flower run.

Grinding it in a coffee grinder does end up with a higher return, but the offset is a chlorophyll absorption.
Hope this helps.

@Covertgrower with that being said, since i already am packed and ready ill blast this one and by next weekend I’ll hand grind into small pieces and try that. I have a good feeling about this because i have tried tons of different things BUT this. I’ll post the results, heck i might just dump and smoke the ground up stuff and just pack it again.

In my experience, there’s not enough there for me… most trichomes are gone, and not much for terpene content.

I really hope it changes the end results, and I look forward to your post.

@Covertgrower no lol i wasn’t going to run tane through what was already packed and frozen, I was just going to dump it and pack another I’ll just smoke it later… This material is very good material BUT I have way to much for myself and my wife so this is play around with stuff to learn with  and I have been trying to get this right for over a year and im determined! I appreciate all the advice and definitely will keep posting pictures and results till I get this knocked out!

Another question is, I always just toss my material after running once instead of air drying and rerunning for anything else. Can you even get anything from a second run? Thanks :+1:

Well instead I just ran it just to see if it was temps… I blasted the zip and am using no water and just letting nature take its course on evaporating the tane. This way I can pack another instead of grinding and try that as well…

Images are of the coffee ground up material with no heat.

This is a personal call. Some people rerun material, when they have trim to run.

I personally do not rerun material, as the return is not high enough, and neither is the quality. I toss mine, it has almost no smell, and very little trichomes left.
It’s not worth the time, energy, or the return in my opinion, especially from what it sounds like is that you grow a significant amount, with a good supply.
Extraction is really for those that grow a large amount with a lot leftover. It’s fastest way to use excess efficiently, while reducing the space it uses. Extracts stack neatly in a small space. :slightly_smiling_face:

It looks good, hard to say the accurate color with what looks like a coffee filter. I’m sure it’s not that. I use parchment paper, or preferably silicone baking mat for non stick.

@Covertgrower thats unbleached parchment paper liners for air fryers, they work great and i to move material to a matt.

@Covertgrower just a FYI, I ran the stuff I had already packed in a small tube (image below). This was already ground in the coffee grinder. I blasted and let sit outside for several hours I then scraped onto a mat and vacuumed to -29 with heat mat on 85°. The material is gooey and sticky and it been in vacuum for a few days now.

I repacked my small tube with hand broke up pieces the size of little less than marbles. I want to leave what i got in the vacuum chamber for a day or two more then I will give the different gound stuff a try following your instructions.

Not a bad color, and it’s not runny anymore. Looking better, and closer to the results you were looking for correct?

Could your butane be contaminated

Not sure if my post on how I’ve open blasted for years may have any useful ideas but from my experience I’ve only gotten a finished product like that if the material was wet or damp.

Not saying thats the case because reading through your process, i don’t see how it could get wet unless it’s building condensation in the freezer but if the column is sealed up it shouldn’t :man_shrugging:

But maybe try a run without freezing the tube.

Heres what I’m smoking on now open blasted with all diy stuff.

Here’s the post showing my method.

I’m waiting now on my 1lb closed loop extractor kit to get here, supposed to be delivered today. However I’ve blasted alot of material through my diy stuff and have gotten great results most always as long as things are dry and I don’t over heat when purging.

Well it came out like taffy again… I have had a lid in the freezer for over a week with the flower hand chopped to a little less than marble size. I’m going to blast it today and see what happens.

@plumbdand I doubt if it’s contaminated tane. I have tried several different brands, top quality brands and my results are the same.

@1HappyPappy I would love to get my results like yours for sure, I read your how to post and it seems similar to mine except for I freeze mine in in my cylinder.

Here is an image of a lid in my small cylinder That’s been sitting in the freezer for over a week. The valves are closed. Maybe that’s why I’m getting taffy results.

I honestly don’t see how it could do it but im not a chemist.
If the freezing is basically the only difference and you have never skipped that step then it’s definitely worth a try.

A turkey baster like in my post only hold 5-7 grams or so if you wanted to pick one up just so your experiments dont take so much material till you figure it out.
Butane tip fits right in one side and a hose clamp holds my screen on good :+1:

I use a closed loop system I dont like doing open blast extraction. Its always windy and the humidity is usually around 15-20% where I live. Too risky for me. I’ve never seen bho that ended up gooie like that. I was just throwing it out there cuz no one mentioned it. Whenever I get new butane I run it through my extractor without any weed to re distill it to clean it up and remove any contaminants. Sometimes the butane has tiny amounts of other oils in it, that end up in the extractor when I first run it through. Then I clean the whole thing with alcohol. I stopped buying the cans of butane and got this.

I use it to fill a 6 liter recovery tank and use that to do my extractions.

@plumbdand @1HappyPappy @SoggyCashew
This the same butane I purchased also.
Dang, buy 2 get one take my money! :joy:

Totally not my area, I just read along and dream. I still just have glass dildos (just 2 not 748)

I wonder if @SoggyCashew is working with a frost free freezer and that’s causing his moisture problems :person_shrugging:t2:

Ok i think i might be on to something… IT’S WATER!!! I found a drop when blasting AND after the tane evaporated enough I scraped onto my mat and water was beaded up in my BHO. I think it’s coming from when I’m blasting it. It might be dripping off of the cylinder or there’s Frost inside my cylinder. I’m going to do another run without freezing anything and see what happens!

Here’s what I blasted today with the large hand broke up pieces.

I think it was you @Covertgrower that pointed me in that direction.

My 450 gram closed loop kit came and was missing the vacuum pump, messaged the guy and he apologized and said he will ship it Monday so hopefully it’s a nice one
It wasn’t pictured so I don’t know what i bought.

I’m not going to lie, its a little intimidating, its alot bigger then i thought.

I think it has some upgrades but idk :man_shrugging:

Is there typically so many sections
There’s the 450 gram sleeved column that goes on top of this, but I’m wondering why 3 sections above the ball valve?
